Not so funny to me. I had to remove one lens from my glasses after first cataract surgery. Still have lens for left eye, but get that done on the 24th. I'll be able to read more posts here then. Gets hard to look a print for any length of time.

And it is COMPLETELY fake. My husband and I have just checked it a few times and we were annoyed shitless. Firstly, most of the guys look too handsome. Secondly, they are way too clean. Hiking around in the wilderness for a few hours? Your clothes, hands and face are going to get wet, sweaty and dirty. You should see these guys, like they just stepped out of a shower and fohned their hair. Not a single trace of sweat. Their gear looks brandnew and unused. It is fucking ridiculous.
I used to like NatGeo years ago, but my interest and respect has steadily gone down over the years as more 'fake shows' entered the channel. Now I'm pretty much at the point of being appalled and disgusted at the ridiculousness.
The worst thing is, lots of young and inexperienced folks don't get that it's fake, because they never saw the earlier shows and they've never done any trekking themselves.
There used to be another -equally ridiculous- show with a 'survivalist' dude who would eat just about anything. The advice he gave was often stupid and sometimes even bordering on the point of insanely dangerous. My husband knows plenty about survival and was outraged at this show. If people would follow the advice of that show they would surely end up dead or badly injured.

For the second image, it's (remotely) possible that someone posted it in earnest, seems far more likely that it was a troll post made using a picture taken from a page belonging to someone who was excited to see one of the most famous living astrophysicists..
Technically.. If you were to believe him (saw info on gizmondo or somesuch), he knew who he was and put that out there as a sarcastic joke. Can't say for sure.. But it sure brought down a ton o' hate on him...

Physically that is not an untruth. In the army standards have been lowered several times for physical strength and endurance because otherwise they had no new recruits. Where 30-50 years ago they'd have 60 applicants, 10 made it through the harsh tests. Do those same tests today and perhaps one applicant will pass, if you're lucky.

Well, not so much a 'Funny Pic' as such, but more an interesting fact and a lovely oil painting. 'Flaming June' is an expression often used sarcastically in the UK when we cast scorn on the indiferrent summer weather.
…which guarantees I'll have something pleasant to contemplate when we have more rain later this week.

That is cool. At the hotel congress in Tucson, they have a similar arrangement of pennies Enviroteched onto the floor.
I was in a basement of a friend of a friend. He built a 20 foot bar with the pennies. It was so so cool. I can't imagine how beautiful a floor would be. The record floor is beautiful, too. I can envision my piano in that room.

It happens much more often than the press will publicize. The saying, "if it bleeds it leads" is their motto and for a reason. That drive for "blood" in stories also leads so many times to bad reporting as they want to meet the deadline instead of verifying their stories.
As for people in the picture, I hope they both got copies. Such a nice thing to add to your life's memorabilia.

I grew up a tomboy. My parents will even tell you that. From falling out of a tree and breaking my arm to my first driving lesson in a International Harvester Tractor. I never had a GI Joe or anything like that, never had a barbie either, but I would walk around with a baseball cap on my head (still do) even going to school. The only time I "ever" wore a dress is when I had to go to a school dance or mom made me wear one for something or another. But I "always" wore cowboy boots all the time no matter what I was wearing.

To give people an idea of how useless I am at such things, I recently had a recall for my Dodge Ram that included some software updates. Right afterwards I could barely hear my incoming phone calls to my hands-free setup. My Peruvian would call, and I’d tell her I’d have to talk later because I couldn’t hear her. I told my brother-in-law, and he asked if I tried the volume knob. Nope, never occurred to me. I never had to adjust the volume before for the phone, so it never occurred to me to try that until he suggested it. I only used the volume for the radio, thought the radio was all that knob adjusted.
And I’ll repeat myself, it would never occur to me to try without it being suggested. I’d never have figured that out on my own.

I used to hate all the "lol" and "R U ok" crap. I would actually type out Ha ha if I found something funny. But then I felt super old and now I'll abbreviate things just to do it. I'll send my girlfriends a text and put BJG or something like that in it. When they asked what it means I'll just tell them they're getting too old and need to get with the times.

There is on going training on a daily basis. I'm trained to hand out cat treats on demand, put fresh water in water dish several times a day, take cats outside in good weather when they go to the door and yowl, plus cater to any other needs they feel necessary, like sharing half my chair.
So again...no...no hitting in our house.

One thing that has occurred to me is that alcohol smell after you use sanitizer. I use sanitizer after returning to my truck from a store, and I keep thinking about getting pulled over right after and reeking of alcohol. I’m sure I could explain it by showing the sanitizer, but still.

Yeah, that was me around 11:30AM yesterday, except it was far more crowded around the flowers than it was around the cards. Checkout was a card, 2 bunches of flowers (red roses had been picked over, so got a mix), a stuffed bear with stripes and a koala bear balloon. Oh, and cilantro. It’s always fun with the balloon; it tries to float away and once scanned doesn’t show as being in the bagging area due to being weightless. But I did discover a trick, waved my hand down in the bagging area and the voice telling me to put the balloon there finally shut up.

When he's driving and the Fuel needle is almost on empty, well.... "We've got at least 50 miles before we have to stop." But when the girls leave the house in a vehicle, "If it's less than a half tank, hit the gas station and top it off."

His favorite new hangout spot is in the bath mat. I used to always hang it up after a shower, but I now leave it on the floor, since he likes to chill there.
Most mornings when I come back for a run, he follows me into the bathroom when I go to take a shower. He love the warm steam, and he'll hang out there for hours afterward. The toilet paper roll is about two feet to the left.
As you can see, he also brings "friends" when he goes in there. The snake and hamster are from a basket in the living room, and the beaver (no jokes, please) usually sits on my bed.

So apparently since I was born in '85, I used to be part of a subcategory of millennials as Gen-Z. Now apparently those of us born between '81 and '85 are referred to as "geriatric millennials". And we are the best equipt for working between the generation gap. Meaning we adapt well with worning with millenials, Gen-x, and Boomers.

Hasn’t been much popular music in a generation that I thought was worth a shit. Still some less well known musicians doing some great stuff though.

When I posted the cartoon I was hoping some of the older members would have remembered the song. Otis Redding received his big break at the Monterrey Pop Festival. Like many Black singers in the 60s, they sang in their church choirs before singing professionally. His life tragically ended when his plane crashed into a lake in Wisconsin after finishing up a concert.

I remember in the 80's my sister getting yelled at for taking the cordless phone to her room and daddy threatening to reinstall the corded phone.
We still have a couple of cordless phones connected to our landline, and neither gets much use. I can't remember the last time anyone attempted to send me a fax.
I was watching an old movie called Jigsaw (1962) yesterday, and marvelling at all the lo-tech equipment in the police station. Officers moving small disks around a large table to indicate the position of police cars (just like WWII war rooms), or urgent messages being sent by clanking telex machines.
One thing I'd completely forgotten was the ringing bell sound made by police cars and ambulances. How times have changed.

Correct, it does support the knees and hips. It gives the sensation of sleeping next to someone when cuddled up next to it. I loved my body pillow. I had one for 14 years. I swapped it out for Dan, and put the pillow in my storage room in the basement. The oldest came across it and uses it now. She sleeps so much better, she says.

A long time ago I used to visit an elderly widower who was housebound because of health issues. He would sit in his favorite armchair and ramble on for hours.
On one visit he told me about all the cars he'd ever owned. In the 50s he bought an imported French car (can't remember the make) and said his wife had loved it. These days web pages chew up memory like there was no tomorrow. Every hour or so I close windows and clear browser caches. And if I hear the cooling fan in my computer whining, I close tabs one by one until I find the culprit.
It beats me how folks can keep that many tabs open without setting fire to their computers. Or maybe they're all using smartphones or tablets. Would that make a difference?

Never stayed at the Grand. We've rented on the island at cottages when I was a teen. One year it rained and all we had were our bikes. My dad had spray from the rear tire put a stripe up his back. Problem is, there is so much horse poop around the island that the stripe was brown. So gross, but so funny at the time. And he wasn't the only one sporting a stripe. My bike had fenders luckily.

Albertson also played Grandpa Joe in Willy Wonka. And I think the reference to a “free loading sack of shit“ is a reference to Grandpa Joe, particularly in the remake Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. A lot of memes ridiculed the fact that he laid in bed for years, doing nothing, and then suddenly got up and invited himself to go along with Charlie to the chocolate factory. A couple of fun things in this vain I've been a part of. God, back in the earlyish '90s, I was running a pizza shop in Ohio. I had a driver that was working 3 full-time jobs. All so he could buy the latest computer equipment the minute it hit the shelves. He came in all excited one day because the company he ordered from said he was such a great customer they were going to upgrade him for free from the single-speed hard drive he had ordered to the brand-new dual-speed.
When I was in college I took an independent study in new technologies (my major was Radio, TV, and theatre.) So this was back in 1986, and one of the "new" technologies was VCD, which was the video version of a regular CD-Rom. They were replacing 12' laser disks.
Notice how the original laser disc says side 2? That's right, halfway through the movie you had to flip the disc like a record. And speaking of records, when my youngest was about 9 or 10, she saw some of my old albums out and asked: "What are those big, black, round disc thingys for?" God I felt so old.

What is currently considered the dead man's hand card combination received its notoriety from a legend that it was the five-card stud or five-card draw hand, held by James Butler Hickok (better known as "Wild Bill" Hickok) when he was shot in the back of the head by Jack McCall on August 2, 1876, in Nuttal & Mann's Saloon, Deadwood, Dakota Territory. Hickok's final hand purportedly included the aces and eights of both black suits.[6]
According to a book by Western historian Carl W. Breihan, the cards were retrieved from the floor by a man named Neil Christy, who then passed them on to his son. The son, in turn, told Mr. Breihan of the composition of the hand. "Here is an exact identity of these cards as told to me by Christy's son: the ace of diamonds with a heel mark on it; the ace of clubs; the two black eights, clubs and spades, and the queen of hearts with a small drop of Hickok's blood on it",[7] though nothing of the sort was reported at the time immediately following the shooting.
Hickok biographer Joseph Rosa wrote about the make-up of the hand: "The accepted version is that the cards were the ace of spades, the ace of clubs, two black eights, and the queen of clubs as the 'kicker'."[8] Rosa, however, said that no contemporaneous source can be found for this exact hand.[9] The solidification in gamers' parlance of the dead man's hand as two pairs, black aces and eights, did not come about until after the 1926 publication of Wilstach's book—50 years after Hickok's death.[6][1]
I've always thought any two aces and eights were called a Dead Man's Hand (at least in poker games I've played in), so it was interesting that at least one source says an ace of diamonds was one of the cards. This is the first I've heard of the queen of hearts or clubs, but I've read elsewhere that the fifth card was a five of diamonds. Of course it's all speculation at this point. There's no definitive proof of any of it.

My understanding has always been that any hand containing two black aces and two black eights is considered “the dead man’s hand.” If you Google it and click photos, you’ll see any one of a number of combinations for the fifth card. Typically a jack, a queen, or a joker.

It just comes through the radio now. The crockpot and electric skillet I havent used personally but I've had food from both.
However there are quite a few things on this list that I had no idea what it was but some I could guess. That thing with the letters and the sliding thing in the middle I have no idea what it is, and I can assume that the thing with the lights on the side was a makeup mirror...

Where I grew up it wasn't uncommon to have 3 corners of an intersection with a gas station. They frequently had "Gas Wars" trying to draw in customers. The lowest price I remember was 11.9¢ per gallon. Normal price at the time was closer to 20¢ a gallon.
That's two gallons for a quarter with a penny change. I could make two gallons last almost a week (except on Friday and Saturday nights).
There was a mom-and-pop drive up place that sold hamburgers (really good hamburgers), 5 for $1. When McDonald's first came to town, I bought many a Big Mac and milkshake combo for 50¢. Sometimes I didn't even have to pay anything, if my brother was working. ^-^
(A Dairy Queen milkshake is now 6-bucks, but I'll need to switch to the Random Rant thread to talk about that.)

But I had heard the story retold many times about my daddy getting really mad one day when he pulled into a gas station and thought he was paying $0.53 per gallon, then he realized it was for a 1/2 gallon. The gas pump didn't have the capabilities to charge in dollars. Only cents. He didn't even finish filling up when he realized that. He got back in the car, huffing and puffing about that gas station owner being a crook. We pulled into another gas station that was charging $1.05 a gallon. He was okay with that. After filling up, when he got in the car, my sister explained to him that he just saved $0.01 per gallon. "A penny saved is a penny earned girls." Heard this many times in my life from daddy. The

I use about one roll a month. My son uses a couple of megarolls a week. Seriously. How much toilet paper do you need to wipe your bung? Of course, I pay for all the TP. And the forests that sacrifice their lives to make the paper.

No doubt some Doctors would a look at sexy Nicky and say it wasn't just the drugs that was the problem. Too much hotness on top of the meds can also be a problem.
So glad you reached out to your British doc for help. They may have found a couple of melted puddles if you hadn't got proper help.

That was mentioned ! I overheard a conversation between two nurses ,they didn't realise I could understand french ! Much laughter and embarrassement when I joined in with the joke !

This makes me laugh.
Speaking of him.....The kids said there was a man doing Stevie Wonder impersonations at the place they were watching the solar eclipse when he'd put his solar glasses on. They even took video of him. He was quite good.
