Like many Americans, Tim Childress of Dallas bought an American flag to help celebrate the Fourth of July.

He was a little taken aback, however, when he found that the flag bought at a Dollar Tree store not only has the requisite 50 stars denoting the states, it tacks on an extra 11 stars, WFAA-TV reports.

"You can kind of see the stars are all crooked, and if you count them, there's actually 61 stars," he said.

Childress concedes he paid only a dollar for the flag but says the Dollar Tree and the Virginia marketing company could do a bit better, and he sent them an e-mail pointing out the error.

"I kind of let them know there are 50 states in the United States, and they need to correct this — or at least get the Chinese supplier to correct this," he tells WFAA.

The Dallas TV station says the Dollar Tree assistant store manager wouldn't comment on camera about the excessively star-spangled banner, but said the flag is sold as a "patriotic banner" — not as an American flag.

Per the United States Flag Code, the US flag should not be used for "any decoration in general".  It states that Bunting of blue, red, and white stripes, with the blue on top, can be used for decoration (read 'patriotic banner').

If it looks like the flag, it is a flag, and should conform to the design in the flag code.  If it's not a flag, then it should look anything like the flag.

Incidentally, the flag code is a law (Section 1 of Title 4 of the United States Code), but you can't be punished for breaking it.

(Which is a shame, IMHO).

I can understand how irritating this sort of stupidity is to Americans, we Brits get similarly annoyed when ignorant people fly the Union Jack upside down.

I have a coworker who disapproves of the Obama administration.

So he has one of those car flag mounts; who know, the kind you put at the top of a window.

And he's switched the flag so it's upside down.

Some people just don't get it....

The initial statement is for an American flag with 61 stars...perhaps there is National karma in progress...which territory will be ours next?

Flying a flag upside down is an internationally recognized signal for distress, but it's not to be taken lightly.

This is a fact, the Union flag as it correctly called is the combined flags of Ireland, Scotland and England and as such has a right way up when flown.

To all who observe the 4th as a holiday, let us at KB wish you a happy and safe 4th of July.  We hope the "bang" that is normally heard on this holiday is of the nice kind.

The extent of my personal knowledge, comes from a female mail-clerk stationed with me in Holland.  It was an interesting sight to see her standing outside with a big cheek full of Red-Man chewing tobacco.

OK so my buddy and I decided to blow up 4,000 firecrackers at one time. I didn't realize that I was supposed to uncoil them so they would blow up independently. Well I lit the whole coil and let her rip. This is what happened.

I knew the answers to all of these questions - and I like 9000 miles away. Back when I went to school, it was part of World history and we learnt it all....very different these days. If I asked my kids similar questions about their own country, they would be exactly the same.

This July 4th, celebrate our nation’s birth not just by watching fireworks, but by setting off some of your own. Don’t just eat BBQ, play hide the sausage. OK, these double entendres are played out. We know it. We’ ll just come right out and say it: Whatever your plans may be this holiday, assert your (sexual) Independence by making time for a good ‘ol outdoor romp. The holiday requires it. Just don’t get caught. Unless you’re into that kind of thing. After the jump, our suggestions …

1. During a fireworks show. Be as loud as you want, no one will hear you moan.

2. The boat house. All the boats will be out on the water and no one will be there to interrupt you. Oh yeah, and the subtle rocking motion will only help you on your voyage.

3. On a boat. If you have access to one. DUH. Unless you or your partner is prone to sea sickness.

4. In the wilderness. Let the other campers roast marshmallows while you work on pitching a tent.

5. On your rooftop. If you’re the multi-tasking sort, take your business up to the roof after dark so you can make the sex and watch the fireworks display at the same time.

6. On a picnic blanket. So sweet. So innocent. So HOT.

7. Inside an ice cream truck. Popsicles, cones, and sprinkles. Oh my. You won’t be calling anyone Mister Softee.

8. In a pool. You won’t get sweaty, but you will have fun.

9. On a Slip ‘n Slide. This is basically a glorified, outdoor sex toy. Have at it.

THE 4TH OF JULY JELLO SHOTS
1 Cup UV Raspberry Blue Vodka
1 Cup Coconut Rum
1 Cup Strawberry Vodka
3 Cup Hot Water
14 oz. Sweetened Condensed Milk
3 oz. Berry Blue Jell-O
3 oz. Strawberry Jell-O
4 Packet Knox Unflavored Gelatin
1 Star Mold
1 Flat Pan


1) Blue Layer: Pour 1 cup UV Raspberry Blue Vodka. Add 1 packet of gelatin. Add berry blue jell-O. Add 1 cup of hot water. Stir until jell-O and gelatin have dissolved. Pour liquid into flat pan and place in fridge to set. Make sure this layer is properly firm before pouring white layer.

2) White Layer: Pour 1 cup Coconut Rum. Add 2 packets of gelatin. Add 1 cup of hot water. Add sweetened condensed milk. Stir until jell-O is dissolved and the sweetened condensed milk is properly mixed in. Pour liquid on top of blue layer and place in fridge to set. Make sure this layer is properly firm before pouring red layer.

3) Red Layer: Pour 1 cup strawberry vodka. Add 1 packet of gelatin. Add strawberry jell-O. Add 1 cup of hot water. Stir until jell-O and gelatin have dissolved. Pour liquid on top of white layer and place in fridge to set. Make sure this layer is properly firm before moving on.

4) Use star mold. You may need a knife to help in removing the star shapes.

Strangely, I slept like a baby.   Which hasn't been the case for the last year.   Maybe all the fireworks were "white noise" to me.    I did wake up once at about 3am to a big boomer though.   Thought it was outside my window.

Really?  Of all things to be made in China.

No.   But I used to have one.  And have a slight story to it.  Not a string or anything, but a nice modest 2 piece because it was a public beach.   It was a stars and stripe one.   Ended up having a very rude lady in line behind me at the concessions give me crap about it and telling me how it was disrespectful and such.    She said my freedom was a slap in the face to her husband and every person that has ever served our country.    I said, "Is your husband with the army by chance?"    She just nodded.    "I might now him.  I actually just got out of the army.  Where's he stationed?   My CBT was at Fort Jackson.  Also spent some time at Fort Lewis, and most recently Fort Hood."   She turned civil and we actually had a nice conversation the rest of the time in line.

I never really wore it much after that.   After thinking about it, I kind of agreed with her a bit.

Ft Lewis?  Went through there in the wee hours of the morning coming back from Disneyland East, aka as Vietnam.  Went from temps in the hundreds to standing out in a cold rain as we were being fumigated.  But we were back in the World, and that is all that counted.  8)

Same here Toe, was one of the most enjoyable I've had...spent the afternoon playing in the sprinkler with my 3 year old nephew.  Later in the evening we did the whole sparkler routine and got sticky hands and faces eating watermelon...was a good day!

People in my neighbor had started last weekend. What the Hell?!?
Then the were doing it Friday...and Saturday...and Sunday...and...
I believe some people who shoot off fireworks are truly patriot. But I'm sure most are just a--holes who get off on annoying the sh-t out of people.

They've been firing off stuff down here for over a week, every evening (including now).  This year we only had around 50 handgun rounds fired off, previous years have been a couple hundred rounds within a few blocks of me.

Official toll from this year is: 1 foot and 6 to 8 hands, according to Google. 

I've heard some down here that sounded like what we used to call 'blockbusters', 1/4 stick of dynamite.  They're WAY louder than M80s.  Lots of those, a bunch of M80s and a severe buttload of firecrackers and mortars.  The fire department went tearing by at one point last night, wonder what the kiddies burned up THIS time?  Last year it was a car that was sitting on the street.  The morons were shooting roman candles at the parked cars, and one burst managed to light the oil on the underside of the car.  It was totaled.

It was the best 4th of July holiday in a very long time.

Spent the holiday in the mountains near Asheville, NC.   I've mentioned Smokey Mnts because my friend had told me that, but it's the Blue Ridge Mountains.      We had a beautiful view of the fireworks from the house we were staying at.    Toured the Biltmore Estate.   Visited Grandfather mountain.   Did some white water rafting, but it was pretty tame, the water is really low in the rivers, had to actually get out of the raft to carry it through some parts.   We did some ziplining, OMG, best I have ever been on.   So fast and nice long runs.   Also logged 25 miles running.   My favorite was getting dropped at the base of the mountain and running up 1000 feet in elevation over 5 miles.   

Asheville was a wonderful city and I look forward to returning to it again.    It is such a long drive from Detroit though.    I found out that my friend is THE WORST long distance car companion.   She doesn't like to drive, so I drove the entire way there and back.   And she slept most of it.     So after an 11 hour drive there, she is ready to party with the the other couples that are there and I'm completely whipped from the drive and just want to crash.

Glad to get home to my own bed and pillow last night.

Sounds like you a great time even if you got stuck with all the driving.

We had a good 4th here.  Yes, guns were fired, but also Roman Candles and lots of rockets.  We sat out on the patio and watched our neighbors having a great time.

I'm holding up all right now.  It's just this afternoon, I got hit with a string of Black Cats, followed immediately by a Mortar.  I had forgotten it was the 4th of July "Weekends don't mean so much when you're unemployed, except you get to hang out with your workin' friends..."

Mortars turn out to be great for Ambushes, because you don't need Line of Sight to attack someone.  You can't see them coming.  Funny thing about Flashbacks, the machinegun fire (Simulated by the string of Black Cats) came After the Mortar strike.

You get this false sense of security, surrounded by a whole bunch of guys with a whole bunch of guns, but when you can't see the guys lobbing explosives at you, there's not much to shoot at.  I relived that feeling of helplessness today.  It didn't last long.

Thanks for your understanding.  Ironically, freedom isn't free.  Ultimately, someone had to pay the price for all of US.

For the 4th I saw the Star Wars Solo movie with my girlfriend in the late morning and then went to a late lunch for her nephew’s birthday at a Japanese steakhouse.  She bought a cake and candles.  The high point of the day for me was my girlfriend had bought trick candles by accident, she had no clue.  The nephew 22, his sister 20 and grandma are all trying to blow the candles out, but they kept relighting obviously to celebrate the 4th of July.  I was laughing so hard I began choking, the fact that it was unintentional made it so funny.  Eventually the nephew began removing the still burning nubs of candles with his chopsticks placing them in a bowl that was now burning.  He poured tea into the bowl, but the damn things still kept relighting.  It was hysterical!

We went over to her sister’s house for a couple hours before I took her home.  We were both tired and decided not to go somewhere to see fireworks even though places close by we’re having them.  I could see some in the distance as I made the 45 minute drive home.

My dad was the Commanding Officer of a Marine helicopter squadron in Vietnam.
He knows war very very intimately. His was also the job to write home to parents / loved one about their son's death in Vietnam. He won't talk much about it anymore, but I know he lives with it every day.
(Off topic - Dad once told me that a door gunner had a life expectancy of approx. 11 minutes in combat / fire fight).

LOL, was he planning to roll them out in a Parade down the national mall?  Even "Brand new" Shermans with modern materials would be woefully inadequate, and the opposite of impressive in the way that such a parade would be.  If it weren't the temporary neurological glitch of a madmna.

Another time around the sun, and another Fourth of July. This is the first time in decades that I am spending the holiday alone, but I am wishing all of my friends and family here a very happy, safe, holiday celebration. And for all my friends abroad, please say a prayer for this country. That we can resist the urge to slide deeper into fascism. And our crazy Supreme Court doesn’t take away more personal liberties.

You would have thought yesterday was the 4th of July with all the fireworks.  It was just a glimpse of what tonight will be like.

And to my neighbor that set off what sounded like a stick of dynamite at 3am.  Really?

We've got storms on the way, so a lot of shows did theirs yesterday around here. I just stayed home with my head in headphones listening to music.

Though actually, in all fairness, they were the only ones to come here and actually leave every time.   Otherwise, Belgium's the gang-bang cum dump of Europe.  Everyone who's someone in our part of the world has fucked us over at least once in the past 2 millennia.  By the time you kicked out the Brits, we were Austrians.
Took us another 40 years to kick out the Dutch, of all people and have our own little victory.
So hey, celebrate yours. I salute you.
Ours is July 21st.  Though I often get nostalgic and celebrate july 14th too.  Maybe I have a thing for parading legionnaires or something.   :emot_dunno:

That sounds pretty much like the history of Europe. Or the world, for that matter.

It might be quicker and easier to compile a list of nations that haven't been invaded or annexed at one time or another.

I had to explain to my kids that the 1812 Overture has nothing to do with the War of 1812 a/k/a British Invasion 2.0. That was the year that Russia turned back Napoleon‘s army from the gates of Moscow. Czar Alexander 1 commissioned the Christ the Savior cathedral that same year, in celebration. It would not be completed until 1880. And Tchaikovsky was commissioned to create a musical piece for its dedication. And he did so, complete with cannon accents. Fast forward almost 100 years, and Arthur Fiedler decided to perform the piece with the Boston Symphony on the Fourth of July. And it’s a wonderful piece, and the cannons are dramatic, and now everyone plays it on the Fourth of July. But it has absolutely nothing to do with America. History. Learn it.

There is a snippet of France's National Anthem there also along with some Russian folk songs.  If I remember correctly, Tchaikovsky hated it, calling it loud and obnoxious.  It's been a about 27 years since I learned that, so I could be mistaken.

If you listen closely in the intro, you can actually hear the themes of the French national anthem (the Marseillaise) as well as some traditional Russian folk songs and hymns.  In addition, Tchaikovsky had cannons fired and church bells rung during the performance, to recreate the battle and its aftermath. And he did say it was loud and obnoxious. I love it. Coincidence?
