My top ten general:

Dawn of the Dead
The History Boys
Finding Nemo
Black Hawk Down
Fight Club
The Silence of the Lambs
American Beauty
Brick
Chinatown
Love Actually
Dawn of the dead, I'm not sure I have seen this, but I remember some zombies besieging a mall, there was quite a bit of tongue in cheek humour and one or two shocks and a nice-ish twist at the end. Shawn of the dead was much better.

I have yet to see the History Boys

Finding Nemo, I love cartoons, Disney can sometimes be a bit tedious, but pixar have breathed new life into the genre, nearly always a good script which appeals to adults as well as children and some of the animation in nemo is spectacular.

Black Hawk down is a good war movie and portrays the waste of young lives in war in all its tragedy.

Fight club did nothing for me I'm afraid.

Silence of the lambs would have been a really great movie if it hadn't been for Jodie Foster, I find her acting irritating to a degree and in this movie not up to the standard one would expect. Thank goodness she turned down the sequel Hannibal and the superb actress Julian Moore took over, there are very few sequels that are better than the original but Hannibal is one of them.

American Beauty, a truly great film one of my all time favourites.

Chinatown, Jack Nicholson in his prime a classic.

Love actually, I love this movie, its lovely.
love is all around

2005 remake of Dawn of the Dead was amazing.

For me, the appeal of Fight Club lies in its satire. Most of the fans of this film took it as a scathing criticism of modern socio-economics, the irony of which only enhances the movie for me.

I like Jodie Foster's acting, especially in A Very Long Engagement. Julianne Moore is an exceptional actress, but having read Hannibal, the movie adaptation was too far removed from the literature to be enjoyable for me.

You should watch the History Boys, it's a wonderful film, and the play was good as well.

If I were to replace Fight Club and Silence of the Lambs, it would be with Everest (the Imax movie) and Brick.

Waking Life and the Constant Gardner are two other films I really enjoyed.

I agree with you on reading a good novel, the film is invariably disappointing, its always better to see the movie first then read the book. When I first saw The Godfather , I really enjoyed it, I then read the book, great book, great film. I do love movies and so it would be very difficult for me to come up with a top 10. I will get round to watching the History Boys, it did appeal to me when it came out, but I never got chance to go.
Two films I'm planning to see soon, Elizabeth, The Golden years and 30 Days Of Night. Kate Blanchett and Geoffry Rush were awesome in the original Elizabeth, fingers crossed that this one is as good, many sequels are mud.

'I'll be back' most common line
Arnold Schwarzenegger and Nick Stahl
Schwarzenegger starred in three Terminator films
Arnold Schwarzenegger's famous line, "I'll be back", from the Terminator films, is the movie line we use the most, according to a new survey.

The survey by myfilms.com asked which famous phrases we borrow from films to use in everyday conversation.

Rhett Butler's closing line in Gone With The Wind, "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn" was voted second.

The top 10 also included famous lines from Taxi Driver, Jerry Maguire, Dirty Harry, Casablanca and Dirty Dancing.

All of the top 10 most memorable lines were spoken by men.

'Huge influence'

TOP 10 FILM LINES
1. "I'll be back." The Terminator
2. "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn." Gone With The Wind
3. "Beam me up, Scotty." Star Trek
4. "May the force be with you." Star Wars
5. "Life is like a box of chocolates." Forrest Gump
6. "You talking to me?" Taxi Driver
7. "Show me the money." Jerry Maguire
8. "Do you feel lucky, punk?" Dirty Harry
9. "Here's looking at you, kid." Casablanca
10. "Nobody puts Baby in the corner." Dirty Dancing
Source: myfilms.com

"Beam me up, Scotty" from Star Trek is third - even though the line was never said exactly in that form.

Star Wars line "May the force be with you" was fourth, and Forrest Gump's "Life is like a box of chocolates" was the fifth most popular film line.

A spokesman for myfilms.com said: "Our research shows the huge influence films have over people, from life-changing experiences to the way we speak."

The survey of 2000 people also asked people what films they would like to star in.

It found women would choose romantic roles in Dirty Dancing and Pretty Woman.

And men would prefer to star in action films like Star Wars, Die Hard or a James Bond film.

300 I've watched several times, in theater and on DVD. Ben-Hur is just a classic, I watch it mostly for the chariot scene, but I've also watched it many times just because it was (IMHO) the first real 'epic movie.'

As for LOTR; I know many people love to hate it, but I love it and have done marathon's (these are the EE editions mind you, 13 hours of movies) and could probably go and watch them again right now. They will be one of the most remembered movies of all time, especially with the craze they created for those four years. They basically recreated the Tolkien craze that started with the books.

A friend of mine is obsessed with LOTR, and he hosted a marathon last December. I brought a fifth of Jack and a pony keg of Heineken. I finished both by the end (shared the Jack). He also did a star wars marathon (all six movies) but I skipped the first three on principle.

I know this subject has been done to death on the net and in real life, but do you think that the second set of movies (1, 2 & 3) would have been better without Jar Jar, Hayden Christensen and massive plot holes?

To keep it in context of Kristens Board, I would drown Natalie Portman in my squirt!

Unfortunately, removing only one or two glaring flaws would not prevent those 'prequels' from being comparable to the festering wounds on a sarlac's anus. They were an abject defilement of all that was good and right about the original trilogy. Admission of their existence should be avoided, if at all possible.

Besides, what you're essentially asking is "If those movies had been completely different, would they have been better?"

Well, I can't imagine them being any worse.

I know I'll cop a bit of flack over this but i thought transformers was a good watch, if you let your mind relax to the obvious lack of thought in the lacklustre performances.

A visualy stimulating film, and one similar to 300 that I could watch again and again as i doze off to bed.

I must admit Im not much of a movie buff... and my short memory renders older movies unmentionable...

These are also some of my fav movies. Something else we have in common Emily.
Pleasantville and Cider House Rules both stared Tobey Maguire, a talented young actor, almost always watchable, its a pity he felt compelled to do the Spiderman series of rip offs..

Two things:

Does a sarlac have an anus?

and...

I can imagine them being worse... What if say, Brett Ratner or Mc G had directed?

The flat acting came primarily from the actors having to block off a blue/green screen. It made their performance sterile and forced. What greater harm could Ratner have done? The script was already terrible, maybe he at least would have added some frat humor.

Yes, sarlac's have anuses (see Tales of the Bounty Hunters)

Probably one of the worst films I have seen in the last year, The Wicker Man 'staring', Nicolas Cage's  unbelievably white teeth. Why does Hollywood waste millions on re makes of classic movies they haven't got a cat in hell's chance of reproducing?

Hands down it's "DIRTY LOVE" by ex-Playboy Centerfold Jenny McCarthy.

This abortion of a comedy was 95 minutes of my life I will NEVER get back!!! I quickly discovered that it was much like a car accident I witnessed and could not pull my eyes away from the carnage! I ended up watching the whole thing in complete awe of it's inability to be funny or good on any level! Rather than turn it off, I pressed on to see if it could get any worse.... it did not disappoint me!

The NY Times review really did it justice far better than I ever could, so I will repost the review for you to read:

Trolling the Gutter for a Chance at Love
By STEPHEN HOLDEN
Published: September 23, 2005

The fame-famished onetime MTV hostess Jenny McCarthy wrote and stars in "Dirty Love," a gross-out comedy that proudly announces itself as carrying on the (ahem) cinematic tradition of "Porky's." In its wildest dreams it does.

In this pitiful shambles of a sex farce, Ms. McCarthy is Rebecca, a struggling photographer who goes bonkers on discovering her crude lug of a boyfriend, Richard (Victor Webster), in bed with another girl. Each of the blind dates with whom she hopes to make him jealous is more pathetic than the last. One vomits on her as she pulls him onto her chest at a fashion show. Another botches the party trick of yanking the tablecloth out from under a meal and empties a restaurant dinner on her lap.

Rebecca's two sidekicks - Michelle (Carmen Electra), a body waxer who speaks in preschool Ebonics and imagines she's black, and Carrie (Kam Heskin), a bimbo who confuses Woody Allen with Woody Harrelson - are of no help, either to Rebecca or to the movie.

In the most protracted gag, Rebecca suffers a menstrual crisis in a supermarket that leaves rivers of blood in the aisles. That embarrassment follows another gag (and I mean gag) involving body orifices stuffed with fish. Through it all, Rebecca's nerdy male pal John (Eddie Kaye Thomas of American Pie) pines to be the Prince Charming who will show her the difference between dirty and pure.

Even by the standards of its bottom-feeding genre, "Dirty Love" clings to the gutter like a rat in garbage. Ms. McCarthy compensates for her utter lack of comedic skills by making clown faces and emitting earsplitting omigod's after each humiliation. Think of her as the MTV-schooled version of Anna Nicole Smith: a self-abasing exhibitionist who would do absolutely anything to be noticed.

A worse film cannot be found.... the one question that kept going through my mind was "How did anyone ever throw one nickel at making this utter piece of shit?"

Why does Hollywood waste millions on re makes of classic movies they haven't got a cat in hell's chance of reproducing?

1) Hollywood spends vast sums (too much in my way of thinking) on making movies. Hollywood is risk averse and so-no one really sticks their neck out.

2) Hollywood is intellectually bankrupt, this is why there are so many remakes and sequels-no original thinking.

3) There is this old axiom that porn producers don't make your fantasies-they make their fantasies. This is true now in mainstream movie making, case in point-Denzel Washington's upcoming movie about a black debate team that beat Harvard in 1937 (YAWN). A pile of political correctness.

My favorite genre of movies is T & A flicks (the best were made in the 1980's). Although movies like Harold & Kumar pop up now and then, these movies are so very rare now, and that disappoints and pisses me off. I've gone from watching 75-80 movies a year to about 12-15. I don't know why people let Hollywood get away with...well, actually, I have a theory-similar to Pavlov's theory about salivating dogs. My theorem is "Spoon fed garbage long enough, people will actually develop a taste for it."

1) Hollywood spends vast sums (too much in my way of thinking) on making movies. Hollywood is risk averse and so-no one really sticks their neck out.

Yet, they continue to produce films that tank, go straight to DVD and serve no purpose.

2) Hollywood is intellectually bankrupt, this is why there are so many remakes and sequels-no original thinking.

This is where I have to disagree. Most years, it is a vacuous pile of drivel we are asked to pay top dollar for. However, this year I have seen several films of fine quality. Including: The Bucket List (My # 1 so far), Juno (so sweet and cute), Knocked Up, Superbad, 3:10 To Yuma, In The Valley Of Allah, Hoax, and despite the excessive violence, No Country For Old Men. Although, there are far many more films that fit into your description, this year was a pleasant surprise for me!

I have a theory-similar to Pavlov's theory about salivating dogs. My theorem is "Spoon feed garbage long enough, people will actually develop a taste for it."

That reaches into most aspects of society today, not just films but TV, books, fashion, various products we don't need but are urged to buy in great quantity...

The list goes on and on.

Transformers, full of 'amazing' special effects, including having no discernible script.

This is the problem-as far as I'm concerned-the weak writing skills of Hollywood. This is why I have a preference for euro movies. Euro movies are made with a budget of only one tenth of that of the average Hollywood movie and those movies are superior in every respect except for visuals (special effects). Besides, euro movies have abundant nudity (in rare supply in mainstream Hollywood fare), and they don't shy away from stories of teen sexuality (America tries to pretend this doesn't exist).

My gf and I went to see Cloverfield yesterday, after while we were eating in Pizza hut, she said the film sucks. I  like monster flicks, this was quiet  scary in parts but I found it hard to watch because of the exaggerated shaking of the hand held camera. Being shot in the first person really made you feel you were in the action, thank goodness we weren't!

The Golden Compass

Several years ago, when The Da Vinci Code came out, the media unzipped-big time. It turns out, the alphabet networks are controlled and staffed by catholics-they take their marching orders from Rome. Thus, they came out big time against the Da Vinci Code.

Same thing happened with The Golden Compass. The movie has an anti catholic theme. The church is ridiculed for it's anti technology-status quo, micro managing principles.

The movie is an epic adventure, based on a series of novels. The hero is a plucky 11-12 year old girl who takes on the establishment, which has enslaved not only classes of people, but also imprioned their children-in the hopes of brain washing them.

The movie is a lot easier to understand if you talk with British people on a daily basis, and if you have read the book. If you haven't, just remember that the movie is set in pre World War I Europe. By the way-WW1 didn't come as a surprise-people then knew it was coming. This is why in the movie they keep referring to "the coming war."

I give the movie an 8.

The Game Plan

If you have only seen ten movies in your lifetime, you know how this movie will come out-five minutes after it starts. The premise-a well  known NFL QB suddenly finds out that he is a father to a very precocious and extremely charming 8 year old. What makes this movie work?

1) Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is actually is a very good actor. I thought after his wrestling and action roles (which I didn't watch) that he was just an Elvis wannabe, but it turns out that Dwayne is also a very good actor, with depth. He also sings an Elvis song in the movie and the man can carry a tune. He's no pop singer, but he does Elvis very well.

2) This is a family movie. You could take your church going 8 year old and his/her youth minister to the movie with nary a regret.

I give it a 9

Fool's Gold

Starring Matthew McConaughey, Kate Hudson, Donald Sutherland and Alexis Dziena

"There has been far more fortunes spent looking for treasure in the sea, than actual fortunes found."  Clive Cussler

Matthew plays a lifelong treasure hunter who has never found anything in his life and he owes vast sums to people in just about every port in the world. Kate plays his much degreed long suffering wife who badly wants a divorce because her husband's credit problems have pretty much ruined her life. She's taken a position as a waitress on a millionaire's yacht just to have some money in her pocket (so she can pay a lawyer to divorce Matt). Then her husband finds a very rare plate off an island in the Bahamas. The problem is, the island is owned by a murderous rapper who wants Matt dead.

The movie never drags, and if you can avoid the holes in the plot, the movie is good escapism. Alexis Dziena steals just about every scene she is in (that girl has a body for sin-BTW, you can see every inch of her naked body in Broken Flowers), and Donald Sutherland plays second banana to his much younger co-stars (I guess he took the job for a paycheck).

I give the movie an 8 (mostly because Alexis spends a lot of the movie in tiny bikinis).

Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds

The last time I saw a 3-D movie, it was actually physically painful because of the 3-D glasses, so I was hesitant about seeing the movie. In the past couple of years, 3-D glasses have drastically improved, so watching the movie was pleasurable in several respects.

Also, I went to go see the first movie on a weekday (the kiddees are in school), so I anticipated an empty theater (pretty much) and a discount price-boy was I wrong-it actually cost me 15.00 to get in. So....

The 3-D experience was actually a GREAT idea for the movie. The movie mixes concert footage and backstage stuff. The movie doesn't lag and Miley actually puts on a great show. The 3-D experience while she's onstage makes you feel like you are actually right next to her. If only the true concert experience was like this.

If you like rock concerts, this is for you. If you want to rent the DVD, you might lose some of the experience at home-unless you have a home theater set up. You might also have to wait in line because preteen kids will watch this over and over and over.

I give this an 8.5

BTW-Miley and Disney have raked in a massive fortune between Miley, the TV show, the concert tour, and now the movie. They could've done the same had they coughed up 5 million to pay Hilary Duff, but Disney suddenly got cheap (talk about blowing it!!). In a few years, Miley's contract will be up, and let's see if Disney gets cheap again.

Definitely, Maybe

Quick synopsis: A father has to explain to very special ten year old daughter how he met her mother ( a divorce is looming and she's never heard the story).

Once a decade a romantic comedy comes down the pipe that is so special that it should be near the top of the list of romantic comedies-for those who enjoy this genre (like me). Lots in this genre fall on their face, but "While You Were Sleeping" and Sleepless in Seattle have risen to the top. "Definitely, Maybe", deserves to join this duo as a great.

There are great performances by Amy Adams and Abigail Breslin, who carry this movie. Without these two, this movie would be a dud. There is good writing in the movie, but due to a hit/miss casting director, these two carry the script while it is obvious the others are just reading off cue cards. As a matter of fact, the acting of Amy and Abigail make this a "must see".

The movie never lags, and it builds well to the conclusion with just the right stuff.

I give it a 9.5

Well, hello all, this is a pretty interesting forum. Thoroughly unexpected. I feel like I'm altogether way too net illiterate for such a sophisticated place, but here goes...

Oddly (or perhaps not) this is where my first post winds up.

1) The Princess Bride.

How can this not be the best film of all time? No matter how many times one
has seen it is always enthralling from beginning to end.

2) 2001, a Space Odyssey.

Never a film like it. Before or since. From one of the great minds of the 20th century in Arthur C. Clarke, and Stanley Kubric, who, at least, could play on the same field.

and in no particular order

3) Chinatown (Perfect)

4) Aguirre, the Wrath of God (Less prententious than Fitzcaraldo)

5) Vertigo (Perfect, with Kim Novak)

6) The Matrix (Too much visually, and too many ideas, to ignore)

7) Kelly's Heroes

8) The Wizard of Oz (can't really be left out)

9) Pulp Fiction

10) The Seven Samaurai

oops

10.1) Kagemusha

10.2) Fargo

10.3) Rear Window

10.4) Die Ehe der Maria Brauns (The Marriage of Maria Braun)

10.5) Reservoir Dogs

The Spiderwick Chronicles

Ever since the success of Lord of the Rings, studios have been trying to find epic movies-based on books-to bring to the screen. The Spiderwick Chronicles is the lastest epic to hit the screen, and although not a direct hit, pretty close to the bullseye.

I was a gifted child who burned out on Dick and Jane in the first grade, so I started reading Truman Capote books, skipping the teen fiction genre (like Spiderwick) so I am actually discovering this genre as the movies come out. Spiderwick got hammered by the critics (unfairly I think), but these same critics think torture porn is cool, so a movie with decent values is beyond their ken.

The premise-a family, recently shattered by divorce, moves to an ancient house in the woods. The kids soon discover the house has a past, a dangerous secret that endangers them. The kids have to rise to the challenge to rescue the family from harm. The movie never lags ans has a wonderful ending-best I've seen in a long time.

I give it an 8

Thanks Grm,

Oh, I (we, Wife and I) do get out, although, admittedly, since we left Manhattan for the Styx we don't see as much film as we used to. I take the concept of "top 10 films" (and film in general) with a fair degree of ardor, and think that it's easy to be blinded and swayed by new and exciting.  A lot like love and sex, and baseball for that matter. The proverbial "test of time" has more than a little merit, and since there are at least 30 films jostling around in my top 10, entry requires staying power. That being said, Fargo, Pulp Fiction, the Matrix and  Reservoir Dogs are all dangerously recent, but demand inclusion. I think that for a film to be great it ought to compel you to watch it again, and without an inclination towards the fast forward button. There are a fair number of recent films clamoring at the door, Mystic River and Enemy at the Gates come immediately to mind.

Life (film) is like baseball. Remember Darryl Strawberry and Dwight Gooden? Three years into their ML careers it was obvious that we were looking at two of the greatest players of all time, right? I didn't feel that way about Mike Schmidt, although he was very good every season, but after he retired it became obvious that he belonged in that "Greatest Of All Time lexicon." Now take Roger Clemens, a year ago it seemed obvious to me that he was possibly the greatest pitcher of all time! but now the steroid issue????  So Peter Jacksons LOTR trilogy is like Clemens, with steroids looming over it's head. IMHO "The Fellowship" is near perfect, the "Two Towers" very, very good, and "The Return of the King" deeply flawed, but  pumped to overflowing with steroids.

Penelope
[/color][/b]

First, the set up: Five generations ago, a blueblood Wilhern hurt one of his maids so bad (broke off their engagement because she wasn't a blueblood) that she committed suicide. Her mother, the town witch, cursed the family, that the first born Wilhern girl will have the face of a pig. Five generations later, it finally happened. Peneope's mother, horrified that her pig faced daughter would never be accepted, sheltered her for 18 years. When she turned 18, they tried marrying her off, but blueblood after blueblood, repulsed by her looks, ran for the hills.

Second, my spin: Why doesn't Christina Ricci have an entire mantle of Oscars? After all, she has proved time and again that she is the finest actress of her generation. Her portrayals in Prozac Nation, The Opposite of Sex, Monster, and Black Snake Moan are all Oscar worthy. Her portrayals in Sleepy Hollow and The Ice Storm are mesmerizing. Her acting job in Penelope should get her an Oscar, but because this movie was released in late February, it will probably be forgotten next January when the Oscar ballots go out. That is a crying shame.

Once again, this kind of movie is about those of us with some kind of disability that gets us shunned by mainstream society. Conservative critics will say it's a thinly veiled portrayals of gays shunned by their families, but seeking acceptance from society. As one with hyperlexia-a type of autism, this movie speaks to me. I hope others see this movie and get something from it. This movie will forever be cherished by me.

I give it a ten.

This movie is worth seeing, it has everything, childhood friends in the mould of stand by me, frightening reality, a journey back to redemption. But I wonder how many will be put off by the subtitles and lack of cgi and oh yes no car chases or explosions.
Afghanistan as it is and was for the people who live there. 8/10

I watched Hancock this week and was greatly disappointed. It never really developed anything because they jumped from storyline to storyline like they were going out of style.

Wanted on the otherhand was great. Read both the Comic and watched the movie amd though they were different both were good in there own right.

Scaphandre et le papillon, Le

I didn't read the book, because I didn't want reminding what I had gone through, but when the film came out, I finally went out of curiosity. Both film and book are French[with subtitles]. Ounce I started watching those flickering images, my eyes just opened. Sad, tragic, amazing, inspirational. It was nothing like my own experiences, but it illuminates how fragile your 'untouched' life can be. Watch this and remember to:
enjoy every sunset,
enjoy ever sunrise,
enjoy every smile,
enjoy every touch,
and most of all,
enjoy every kiss.

Based on a true story.  Amazing story of how the brain works.  I think you will like it, as well as the soundtrack.

Watcher...I can't thank you enough for the recommendation, I just finished watching it...was an awesome movie....and the music, well it spoke for itself.  About the only artist that I have never liked was Bob Dylan, his voice just doesn't do it for me.

Thank you, becca.  Any time.

Did you happen to watch the Bonus section where the doctor tells the actual story, along with photos of the person the movie was about?  Very interesting.

Bob Dylan, though a terrible singer, did write some very good music.

I have seen the power of music first hand. Phil had a stroke, he was 51, an engineer, he owned a narrow boat he had lovingly restored. Now he cannot speak more than a half a dozen words, but when the music starts he can sing, every word of the many songs he knows.

I agree Watcher, Dylan was more gifted as a songwriter than singer.

Thanks Grm for sharing Phil...thats remarkable, especially to experience it first hand.

Thank you for sharing, Grm.  Music has many attributes, some that are still being explored by scientists as it pertains to the human brain.

Top ten movies?  That's like asking me if I like my left leg more than my right!  I'll give a try, in no particular order:

The African Queen
The Godfather
Star Wars
My Life As A House
Regarding Henry
GoodFellas
Rio Bravo
The Silence of the Lambs
The Matrix
Serendipity

Ask me again tomorrow, I'll probably have 10 different answers!

Here is my list but with apologies as I find it impossible to restrict to just the "top ten".  In no particular order here's my list.  Know in advance that I really enjoy movies that deal with intercultural tension of some sort, be that differences from countries, languages, sexes, ages or culture in general. Additionally, I really enjoy movies with great messages, movies of overcoming injustice or obstacles, and that inspire.  And then there are just some movies that are plain good no matter what category you put them in.  With that in mind, here's my list:

Treasure of Sierra Madre also has a great movie line:  "badges?  what badges?  we don't need no badges. . . . "  :emot_laughing:

Sorry I can't count too well...

I know what you mean. I've seen elderly people in a nursing home who were in advanced stages of dementia and unable to communicate sing along with a song and 'remember' how to smile. Music can be very powerful.

This is so wrong in so many ways....I can't beleive you even said that.
(1) go check out my list..I bet its completely different from yours.
(2) if you base your dating on what movies i like, your right "we" would probly "never" get together.
(3) there happens to be a lot more involved in dating than just what movies you or we happen to like.
I could go on forever about how bad your statement is about dating and movies.
I really can't beleive your that narrow minded when it comes to dating.

Bumping the thread back to its original question asked, my top ten favorite movies?.. Ah, that's a tough one, so many good ones, it's hard to bring attention to my top ten, I've seen some good ones listed here already. Let me see, my top ten, I'd have to say, it probably changes from time to time, depending on what I watch. This is really hard to answer though, I'm partial to most movie genres, action, adventure, thriller, horror, comedy, etc, etc. I'll take a shot at naming ten that stick out for me at the moment, these are either movies I've watched recently or ones kicking around in my head.

01) The Green Mile
02) The Shawshank Redemption
03) Cast Away
04) Demolition Man
05) Fortress
06) RoboCop
07) Falling Down
08) Terminator 2: Judgement Day
09) Army of Darkness
10) Stir of Echoes

Now, these are fresh in my head, most I've watched recently, probably why they made it in my top ten, this list is ever changing though, still, it was tough to name ten on the spot like that without diving into it too deeply.

I'd like to read others, see more top tens, if you can whittle it down to ten, it's not easy, well, wasn't for me.

I know this is the ultimate "guy movie," but I saw it for the first time a couple of months ago, and I found it one of the stupidest movies I've ever seen.

Worst, for me, was Al Pacino's ridiculous and stereotype-laden Speedy Gonzalez accent. I couldn't help but laugh at moments that were supposed to be serious. And while he's arguably one the greatest actors of his generation, his hammy (and ham-fisted) over-the-top acting job made the character seem like an moron, rather than a feared and ruthless kingpin.

I was a young teen when I saw Scarface and I actually never wanted to see it again because of the chainsaw scene. At that time it didn't feel 'outdated' or 'overacted', but I can imagine it very well might if you watch it nowadays. I still don't want to watch it again, I tend to shy away from movies with chainsaw slaughters, they really make me cringe.

You're not supposed to take scarface seriously. It's the over the top part that makes it so hilarious. When I watch it, I find myself busting up laughing over some of his lines, like after he shoots the bomber and continues to scream at him saying "you stupid fuck....look at you now!" as though the guy is somehow supposed to be hearing him.

I assumed as much. And, as I said, it's a total guy movie.

And I'm with Bexy: I didn't find the chainsaw in the bathroom scene to be all that funny. But that's probably just me...

I tend to shy away from movies with chainsaw slaughters, they really make me cringe.

I find that implied violence is far more disturbing to me than graphically depicted violence. For example, I usually don't get bothered by a graphic rape scene in a movie, but two movies really bothered me, those being A Time to Kill and Eye for an Eye. Both actually showed very little detail of the rapes (even though they were prolonged) yet I found my usually strong stomach was getting unsettled during both of those scenes. They deliberately shot those scenes to leave a lot to the imagination and they freaked me out. In Eye for an Eye, when Sally Field got out of her car and was running up to other cars screaming at people begging them to call the cops while you could hear her daughter screaming into the phone I was literally tensing up with nervous anxiety. I found that quite odd as movie violence rarely upsets me.

Those movies upset me too, so I probably just have a lower treshhold when it comes to tolerating movie violence. Also, when it is based on a real story, I find I can brace myself better because then I usually find that I have to watch it out of respect for the victim who wants her/his story told. I know this might not make sense, but that's just how it feels to me.

If you think graphically depicted violence can't upset you that much, try looking at some Japanese horror type movies. I don't remember the name of the movie, but I do remember that halfway a very graphic, brutal rape scene I just turned the TV off. It was that disturbing. I really don't want to see stuff that will haunt me for the next week or so.

I'll pass. While it doesn't usually upset me I still prefer not to watch it. I tend to lean more towards dramas, comedies and history related movies.

If you want to talk about "timeless" movies, "Casablanca" has to be at the top of the list.  Just watched it for the umpteenth time last night.

The Godfather... Brilliant & timeless!

I just watched it again last night (well, the second half; I turned it on just as Michael shot McCluskey and Sollozzo in the restaurant). It's indeed "brilliant and timeless," and it's also, all things considered, the greatest movie ever made.

P.S. Ms. Cheeky, you might consider using a font color other than teal. It's almost impossible to read...

I agree.  Almost any of Bogart's movies are worth watching over and over.  No special effects.  Just acting.

Francis Ford Coppola's version of Conrad's novel was, to me, a disappointment.  Maybe after watching it one can come away with the notion just how crazy war is but that was only what I got from watching it.

The Godfather is overflowing with life, rich with all the grand emotions and vital juices of existence, up to and including blood.

If you have two hours plus to waste, then watch the movie, Noah. When are biblical movies ever going to stop using actors with British accents?  And perfect teeth in biblical times?  Highly unlikely.  Evan Almighty was a much more entertaining version of Noah.  8)

Thanks for the headsup, I tend not to watch movies depicting Biblical themes.

If you have two hours to spare I enjoyed a documentary that was just aired on PBS called Andre, The Seal Who Came Home...is enjoyable and suitable for all ages.

Maybe when Americans and Brits would watch movies in Hebrew with English subtitles?  I feel biblical movies would sound even more unlikely in an American accent. LOL

Considering three of the main characters are British it's not a surprise.
Ray Winstone, Emma Watson and Anthony Hopkins.
It's a film I'm not in a hurry to see purely because the reviews are shit. The biblical theme wouldn't bother me

"The Passion of the Christ" was in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Latin, with English subtitles.

And there's a fascinating scene when the Chief Priests first bring Jesus to Pontius Pilate. The conversation is in Hebrew, and Pilate has a Latin translator. At one point Pilate dismisses everyone from the room, and he's left alone with Jesus. Jesus immediately switches to Latin (and it's extremely improbable that he would know Latin), and Pilate doesn't even realize it.

I saw it, I didn't feel it was bad but it also wasn't truly captivating for me. The CGI are really beautiful, the acting is ok, but the story is at times a bit slow. I tend not to care about reviews unless they are coming from friends of ours who have similar tastes, because it's such a subjective thing. And I think it's always difficult to retell a biblical story on screen since everyone has wildly different expectations and interpretations of the story.

My point was merely that 'in general' the larger part of the English speaking world doesn't really care to watch subtitled movies, probably quite simply because they're not used to it.

I am the same in regards to reviews, I would only go to see something a friend with similar tastes has recommended or if I really want to see something so I can judge it for myself. I tend to try not give opinions on films etc as we all have different tastes.

Anyone see Divergent?  I am not that much into Sci-Fi but the story line was interesting.

Also, has anyone seen the Dallas Buyers Club?  Besides Matthew Mcconaughey looking downright sick looking for his part, the story about how the pharmaceutical companies push their drugs into hospitals over what some doctors believe may not be the correct treatment makes the movie a good watch.

I was referring to Thomas Jane's version of The Punisher. He did a great job and is quite fired up about the character. So much so, he's trying to push to make another Punisher movie. He made a short film to show just how serious he is about making another movie:

"I wanted to make a fan film for a character I've always loved and believed in - a love letter to Frank Castle & his fans. It was an incredible experience with everyone on the project throwing in their time just for the fun of it. It's been a blast to be a part of from start to finish -- we hope the friends of Frank enjoy watching it as much as we did making it." - Thomas Jane

There WAS originally supposed to be a Thomas Jane/Punisher sequel, you know how things go, they went and rebooted it AGAIN with Punisher: War Zone. I'm glad he's still game for doing another Punisher movie, he did do a great job.

That's because at the time, War Zone comics had just come out and it was flying off the shelfs at a time when punisher was not that popular in comics. (I own original art from the first couple issues :) )

With everyone worrying about the Zombie Apocalypse here in Dallas, I decided to have a Resident Evil marathon this weekend.   :emot_laughing:  Hey, hot chicks in leather can ALWAYS take my mind off of things!  If we survived George Bush I and II, we can survive zombies and Ebola.

Damn.  I looked up the rumors on the last movie (Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2592614/)) and saw that as they were preparing to head down to Queensland to begin filming, Milla found out she was *pregnant* again.  Oops.  Shoot is delayed by another year, so MAYBE it'll be out in 2016.  I imagine it'll cost 'em a pretty penny to mothball everything they've done and store it for a year.

This is a story of a group of young, determined and courageous women during World War II who broke through barriers and shattered stereotypes.

They were the first women pilots to ever fly for the United States military. However, after a nasty and aggressive campaign by male pilots who wanted the WASPs jobs during World War II, they were the only wartime unit that was denied military status by Congress and were sent home before the war was over and their job was done. Because the women were denied military status, the WASPs received no insurance or benefits during or after the war, and if a WASP died during training or while on a mission, their families were not allowed to put a service star in the window, nor could the WASPs receive a military burial. It wasn’t until the middle of the 1970‘s that they would be recognized as World War II veterans, and it wasn’t until 2010, that the United States government would recognize those women who died during their service and the surviving WASPs would receive the congressional gold medal.

Defying Gravity provides a first hand account from WASPs who tell their story and discuss their experiences during the three pivotal periods that make up the WASP history. WASP experts and family members also share their personal stories and expert knowledge.

When I was younger I had obsolutely no interest in The Princess Bride. To me it was boring and stupid, just like any immature guy might think [and to think I still consider myself immature... :P ].
But I have been finding myslef watching it a lot whenever it comes on over the past few years. I think one of my favorite aspects I love about The Princess Bride is the dialogue. There is some really funny sh-t in this movie! The stuff Billy Crystal and Carol Kane say for instance is hilarious, but Wallace Shawn is the funniest of all. "Inconceivable!" I also loved the line about not making a bet "with a Sicilian when death is on the line!" just before he keeled over and died! :^)
One of my favorite part when Princess Buttercup pushes the Dread Pirate Roberts and tells him to die. As he rolls down the hill he says "AS... YOU... WISH..." and she realizes it's Westley and ends up rolling down the hill after him! :P
Great movie! I wish i'd appreciated it sooner.

Montgomery said in the Book of War, page one, rule one, "Do not send your army against Moscow." Rule two is likely avoid a land war in Asia.

Get the book. The latest anniversary edition has multiple introductions. Or listen to the abridged book on tape read by Rob Reiner. He sounds like Meathead from All In The Family with the line "Fezzik, *we* kidnapped the princess!" And also get Inconceivable Tales by Carey Elwes. His behind-the-scenes info on the Greatest Fencing Scene is... well, great. Get used to disappointment. The genuine fencing masters named had very little to do with the fencing moves shown in the film.

Yes. I've seen the movie. I agree with you. It's okay. I stayed awake although I still don't think R.O.U.S's exist-  >oof!<

Chirp, you're not the only one who was able to grasp Back To The Future, Part II. I guess i'm one of the elite. :^) :P
There's so much to love about it. Getting to see what the future might be like is way cool. Just wish they'd spent more time IN the future. If they'd told the story right they could have spent the whole movie on the future.
The alternate 1985 was pretty wild, and it was fun seeing Marty running around shocked by all that was wrong before getting back with Doc, confronting Biff and going back to 1955.
Lots of great stuff in 1955 too. Like two Martys, two Docs, getting to see scenes from the first movie from a different angle, like when George takes out Biff!
I also loved when Marty tries to get the Sports Almanac back from Biff while he's in his car and Marty's on the hoverboard.

I also refuse to watch lethal weapon 4, which joins BTTF 2 as being something I refuse to endure. Though I would pick 2 over lethal 4.

I would *always* pick Lethal Weapon 2.  OMG.  Can anyone say Patsy Kensit?

I can say plastic surgery.

What the hell happened?

If you can believe IMDB, coming this year:

... it's just a jump to the left ...

Yeah, sorry, but it doesn't look like it was worth doing a remake.

It's hard to beat perfection.

I have the Original Version of "Rocky Horror" on a VHS Tape.
There is NO Way I'm going to see a really bad remake of it.
And along the same lines, the remakes of The Pink Panther were not that good either.
Hollywood has to learn that some Actors (and Actress's) should be untouchable, Peter Sellers happens to be one of those people, I don't believe anyone will ever be able to reprise any of his movies like he did. One of his best was "The Mouse That Roared". Along with (of course) "The Pink Panther".

Love,
Liz

She won't. Not since we both love the original.

But she could

I just finished "The Do Over" on Netflix.  Best Adam Sandler movie since Grown Ups (part 1).  Really funny.  Great gags.  Good to see the funny man back in shape.  David Spade plays the straight man, as perfectly as he did in Tommy Boy.  4.5 stars.

Great.   Thanks.   I liked Sandler, then he just got silly.  Not a fan of Spade though.  "The Do Over" will be on my lunchtime viewing this week.

NOT A FAN OF SPADE?!?!? :o

I should have been a little more clear on my thoughts of David Spade.
I DESPISE HIM.
I think he's a weasly little turd.
I'll try watching the movie, but his presence in the movie might cause me to turn it off.

True.    What about Julia Roberts and Lyle Lovet?    Young and beautiful meets (I dunno know how to explain him).
