On Tuesday, I meant to post a message to you all.  I had just finished typing it when the little one started screaming in pain.  She had hurt her wrist when she closed the suitcase her hand was stuck in the handle as she closed it.  And after putting ice on her wrist, I came back to my computer and before logging off, copy and pasted the message I typed and PM'd it to myself with the intention of writing a bit more and posting it later that night.   Well, I forgot.  So here it is, a day late.

So, I'm leaving tomorrow early.  Won't be back until Monday.  If I stop by KB, it will be in the middle of the night when I can't sleep, or early before everyone wakes up.

IF, I don't make it back on, I want to wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving.

I give thanks for many of things this year.  Thankful for our family being able to avoid the virus and have a mostly health year.  Thankful that the elections are behind us, now if only we could fast forward to Feb and move forward.  Thankful for Dan and our family.   And thankful for this other world we all live in here on KB, thankful for it because of all of you - my online friends.

In the evening after dinner when we're sitting around playing a game,  I'll raise my glass of some very good bourbon to you all.  Not sure which brand.  But I'll know tomorrow when I pick it off the shelf of my favorite Kentucky liquor store, The Bourbon Barn.  I-75 KY exit 11, go West just a half a mile.  So looking forward to stopping there.  https://www.facebook.com/thebourbonbarn/
Can't wait.

So, scratch the thankful for being able to avoid the virus line.
I did make it to the Bourbon Barn, so 20 hours in the car wasn't a complete waste of time.

I did get a pour of bourbon on Wednesday night in the hotel, a few actually, but not yesterday.  We're going to get a small turkey and have our 2020 Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow or Sunday.  I'll raise a glass to you all then.

This year is the biggest f^@&ing sh*t show and I'm so damned tired of it.   Sorry for the language, I just needed to say it.

I am sure Jed will put me to shame, but here’s what we were eating a casa de Toe today.

Looks wonderful toe.

I was responsible for mashed potatoes and Mac and cheese.  I added fried parsnips as it’s not Thanksgiving for me without that side.  I thawed some cranberry sauce from 2018.  And since I didn’t have the turkey to make real gravy, that came from Heinz.  The two bags worth of mashed potatoes I kept in a crockpot to keep warm, that worked rather well, hate cold potatoes.  I had a little mini crockpot for the gravy.

There were 20 at dinner, 7 kids.  Yeah I know, too many in a pandemic.  But no one came from out of state, and this is the same group that has been interacting with each other since this all started.  It’s still a risk though, not everyone works from home like me.

It was an OK meal.  In two weeks I’m cooking Thanksgiving dinner just for two the way my grandmother would have done.

As I mentioned in a previous post, the worst Thanksgiving that I ever had was the cider gravy my brother in law made one year.

Well, this year it was worse.  We spent Wednesday in the car.  After driving 10 hours, our college aged daughter got word that she her Covid test was positive.  So, we got a hotel and drove 10 hours home on Thanksgiving day.

But today is what we're viewing as Thanksgiving day.   Turkey went in the oven at 10am.  Dinner is a 2:15.   If you're late to the table, I'm starting without you.  I've been looking forward to my turkey dinner for the last month.  I'm not waiting an extra minute.

I give thanks for many of things this year. Thankful for our family being able to avoid the virus and have a mostly health year. (scratch that, I wrote this on Tuesday) Thankful that the elections are behind us, now if only we could fast forward to Feb and move forward.  Thankful for Dan and our family.   And thankful for this other world we all live in here on KB, thankful for it because of all of you - my online friends.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Gobble gobble,
Jules

Have an enjoyable belated feast. Only downside ( or not) is you'll have leftovers while others are having to head back to the store.

As wife's son always opts to work on holidays for the extra money, we end up celebrating either the weekend before or after.

Still hoping to hear the "middle one" and the rest of you are doing ok.

Since I was a kid, I've watched the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade. I never get tired of the spectacular floats, marching bands and the Rockettes with their high kicking routine never ceases to amaze tho' I've seen them hundreds of times.

The highlight as a kid was the last float of the parade...SANTA!
I still look forward to seeing Santa arrive. The magic he brings to little kids everywhere brings joy.

Hoping everyone had a great Thanksgiving. That's a pretty good list Sir. Mine wasnt that big, but I made 2 pumpkin pie, 2 apple pie, and the pecan pie.
My dad's house was packed to the rafters and there was hardly any leftovers.

Thanksgiving was always my favorite meal of the year, and my favorite part of the meal was always my grandmother’s stuffing made with Bell’s Poultry Seasoning (w/ or w/o oysters).  But lately my new family has variously been in charge of the turkey, and they don’t stuff the bird.  I can bring my favorite Thanksgiving sides of fried parsnips, mashed potatoes with gravy (from a jar unfortunately) and mashed rutabaga, but it’s not the same.

So I made Thanksgiving dinner yesterday and had leftovers tonight.  I had to make one concession, a Peruvian panca paste marinade on the turkey.  I wasn’t sure how that would make gravy from scratch taste, so I chickened out (or is it turkeyed out?) and used a jar of turkey gravy.  Plus, I still had 2 jars from last year that I knew I should use.

Next month it will be Thanksgiving in February, as I’m doing it again.  Maybe this time the gravy from scratch.
