Title: What made you feel old?
Post by: Jed_ on November 01, 2020, 11:53:28 PM
The first time anyone made me feel old I was probably still shy of 30.  I was in line for Grateful Dead tickets, which involved being on a list.  I mean shit, I actually helped start that list.  But somehow the ‘list’ ended up in the hands of this Asian hottie that looked about 19.  I went over to talk to her (cuz she was fucking hot), and she looked up at me and asked, “Excuse me sir, are you on the list?”

I stood there for a moment, and then placed both palms on my face and exclaimed with great woe, “I’m in line for Grateful Dead tickets, and a girl just called me sir!”

This exclamation on my part led both to laughter among all, and an apology from the Asian hottie.  It still made me feel old.

Don't remeber exactly when it was, 3 maybe 4 years ago, I was at a store purchasing alcohol, and when I handed the cashier my ID, and the little shit said "no, it's ok, don't need to see it."

Now I'm all too happy to show my ID when purchasing anything.

At a garage sale many years ago and a kid pointing to something asking his mom what it is.  The mom answered, "Albums, they're like CD's."

What always reminds me that I am old......being called ma'am.  I hate when that happens.

This year, I’m suddenly more sensitive to the cold?  I mean fuck, I’m the guy that goes winter backpacking when it’s 0F or colder, I tough it out, and fuck the cold!

Now I’m whining about turning the heat on, or up.  What’s next?  Do I start whining about moving to Florida, a state I actually hate?

I was flirting with an attractive young woman. I’d known her for a couple of years professionally, but we had just sort of a acquaintance type of friendship. But I liked what I saw, and was thinking about hitting on her. Then she said, “I want to introduce you to a friend of mine.  She would be perfect for you, she’s just like my mom.”

That’s when I realized she thought I was just like dad. And not in a fetish sort of way.

I never got ID'd at bars when I was 18 or 19, but I did most of the time when I was 25-30.  The drinking age has always been 18 here, so I never could figure that one out.  My best guess is that had something to do with beards becoming fashionable when I was in my 20s (I've always shaved).

Something that made me feel old was when I realized that the university students I was teaching had not been born yet when I was in their place.  Then again a couple years ago when the Y2K babies started arriving.

It didn't sink in at the time, but when in my late 40s, wife and I went to the movies and the tickets were cheaper than I thought they'd be. Figured it was just a matinee rate, as we'd gone in the afternoon.  When we came out, I looked at the sign on the ticket office and saw we were given the "senior" rate.  Blew it off as just a mistake by the ticket seller.

What hit me between the eyes tho' was eating at the Olive Garden one day.  I like loud colored shirts. (wife says it's the "peacock" in me) This day I had on a Red Hot Chili Peppers shirt. It was black with bright colored stylized Mexican folk art figures. Our waiter, a friendly young man in his 20s said, "Nice shirt." I enjoyed the compliment until as he started to leave, he added, "I wish my dad would wear shirts like that."

Wife laughed the rest of the day.

Last year, I was across the street visiting with neighbors.  They were having a get together and I saw this good looking guy.  My staring was very apparent as the lady I was chatting with cleared her throat and said that her grandson is a bit too young for me.  He had just graduated from high school before summer.  Guess I have a slight taste for younger.  Even BIG Ben makes me feel old

Eating (1) at the Olive Garden in (2) a loud colored shirt pretty much screams “I’m an old guy.”  Same thing for Applebee’s and cafeterias at 4 in the afternoon.

But those breadsticks are good...

-When Metallica started making make-out music

- Metallica baby pajamas in Kohl's. They had little electric chairs on them! I had that Ride the Lightning t-shirt and my mom had a fit when I wore it to school! "omg why would anyone dress like that?"

-Hearing the Ramones in Walgreens. Even when I was a teen they weren't played on the radio! Now my punk rock is classic rock!

First time I heard New Order playing as muzak.  I think I was at the Foot Locker.  Face it, they probably play the Beatles in nursing homes now.

Like the time in an elevator I heard a muzak version of Jethro Tull’s Aqualung.  And that was like 10 years ago.

I tried to do the math, but my head exploded.

I just add 20 for a generation, but it could just as easily be 25 or 30.

If TMacc's great grandchild has a child between ages of 20-25, Tmacc will be 73-78.  If that grandchild has a child between the ages of 20-25, Tmacc will be 93-103 and a Great Great Great Grandaddy.

He said he was a grandfather for the first time at age 28.  So if he had a child at age 14, and that child became a parent at 14, it would be possible.  If his oldest grandchild made him a great grandparent at 53, that grandchild is 25.

My grandmother was a great great grandmother 4 times before she passed.  My cousin was 14 when she had a girl; that girl married young and became a baby factory.  My grandmother also lived to 95.  We never met my cousin’s kid or her kids, long story.

I was 37 when my oldest was born.  52 when my youngest came along.  So having kids at 14 is just an alien concept to me.  Not judging.  My parents got married in high school. My dad was 17 when I was born.

Perhaps I should clarify.  I actually had my first child at the end of my first marriage when I was 23.  He is the father of my tenth grandchild.  After my divorce, I married Rebecca who is 15 years older than me and she had two girls age 11 and 12.  Their father had not been in the picture in 5 years and never was in their lives again.  They are my girls.  They both got started pretty young.  My first grandson was born premature due to eclampsia (sp?) and weighed in at a whopping 2lb 1 ounce.  So I became a granddad at 28.  He is our miracle grandchild of course and is healthy and robust, hardworking and responsible.  I know you can't tell how proud I am :) and thanks for the woo, I can finally give them back..woos that is

Well I'll just say it.  After reading all these messages about family and kids.  Being happy about how many children and grandchildren you all have...

I think I'll start a thread about "what made me feel young". Unless there already is one but I haven't seen it.

Think I'll put my hair up in pigtails and listen to some n'sync.  FYI justin Timberlake... I most definitely would :emot_thdrool:

So your step daughter had a child when you were only 28, if I’m understanding you now.  Their mother, your wife Rebecca, was a grandmother at age 43.  I’ll notify Ripley’s.  Much more understandable.  And congratulations.

I occasionally take the subway up to the South Bronx to volunteer in a tutoring program for underprivileged kids. The woman who runs it is named Mrs. Rodriguez, and I assume she's in her mid- to late-30s. Since that's what everyone calls her, I have no objection to calling someone younger than me "Mrs. Rodriguez."

One day she had an adorable little girl with her who looked to be around four. I assumed it was her daughter. I was wrong -- she was her granddaughter. And Mrs. Rodriguez is 37 years old.

A woman from Romania said she became the world's youngest grandmother – at the age of 23. Ridca Stanescu, who gave birth to her daughter Maria when she was just 12 years old, said she urged her daughter not to follow in her footsteps – but Maria gave birth to her son when she was just 11.

I was at my dad's last night for a visit, and while we were chatting about a jeopardy answer, his phone rang.  That might not sound that big of a deal, but this was his old rotary phone.

Ring-ring
Ring-ring

I hadn't heard that thing ring in forever.  I asked if I could answer it and when I did, it was a telemarketer of course.  The only person that used to call him on that phone was my grandparents, but they passed away years ago.  When I asked why he still hasn't connected he said it's super cheap and he loves the sound of it ringing. But never answers it because it almost always car warranty calls, but the sound reminds him of his parents.  I know the number so I'll be calling him on that phone from now on.  Just hope he answers.

Why post this here? Because when I answered the phone I remember being a child talking to people and not being able to leave the table it was at.  Sit in the chair and have your chat where everybody could hear it.  30 damn years ago

Watching the funeral of Prince Philip this morning reminded me that he and the Queen have been in the news for most my life. Now just short of 100, he's past leaving the Queen to continue on alone.

I was surprised how sad it made me to watch her walk to the chapel alone, clad in black and stooped over. Yes, eyes were misty.

I've mentioned here before that the first time I saw television was Queen Elizabeth's coronation. I was a first grader and a classmate lived across the street from the school. Our class trooped over and squeezed into their living room to see the pomp of a coronation as only the British can do.

That was nearly 70 years ago, so yeah, damn I'm old.

Pretty amazing when you think about it.. regardless of all the changes over the past seven decades, there have been three things you could always count on.. death, taxes, and Queen Elizabeth.

My Peruvian was 7 when I graduated college, 3 when I graduated high school.

But here’s the fun part, my first wife when she was 24 had a daughter from a previous marriage, who years later became my stepdaughter.  My stepdaughter and my Peruvian are the same age.

First time I felt old, I was actually only 26.

I'm was wearing a Nine Inch Nails T-Shirt I had owned since I was about 15, it was a nice summers day and I passed a group of teenagers just chilling and enjoying the sun. As I passed, one of them said to her friend "That old guy is wearing a NIN T-shirt"

I wanted the ground to open up and swallow me.

But I think the first sign is when you actually lose interest in what music is in the charts. When I was a teenager, I listened religiously, overnight, I stopped caring.

Also my kids don't believe that there was once only three TV channels in the UK.

I was at a bar with my buddy Ben. I spotted a couple of young ladies at a table behind.

I looked at him and nodded towards them. "What you think?"

Ben had a sly glance. "Mmm, very nice. What YOU think?"

"I'd say for a couple of dads we've still got it."

"Want to prove it?"

"Sure."

We strolled over. It was a bar area with those high tables, which kind of it makes it easier to stroll up, and stroll away casually if you get the death stare or pushoff.

"Hi, I'm Colin, this is Ben. Do you mind if we join you for a chat?"

They looked at each other. "Sure, why not."

(Yes!)

The pretty blonde put her hand on my upper arm. "Hey, nice shirt."

I smiled at her. "Thanks."

"Yeah, my dad's got one just like it..."

I'm now seriously beginning to feel old. My age is a very sexy number (can you guess?) and I'm retred. But I wrote, or finished, two books. The pandemic effectively shut me out of the world and I realized it driving around and losing my way in very familiar territory.

Heck, some were re-runs of shows from before I was born, but I'm referring to the ones that actually aired when I was a kid.

Well for one, my body tells me I'm old every so often. :emot_skull:

Also, with each passing generation, the older I feel. The gap between generations gets farther apart and I find it hard to understand or connect with younger generations. From the entertainment and music they like to the way they talk and express themselves. I often find myself face palming at the things they say or do. Just why on earth they do the things they do is beyond me.

Was having a chat with some family friends at the store yesterday, and at point, I had made a comment about being an 80's baby. Right after that, the daughter who was in her late teens was surprised I was as old as I was, which was quite flattering. Yet her next comment was both very insulting, yet very true.

"Wow, I would have never guessed you were born in the late 1900s"

I remind myself that my grandfather was born in 1904. By the year 1923, the ”Gay 90s“ of the late 1800s were viewed as archaic and not modern. The end of the Victorian era.

My son was born in 2002. I think the viewpoint today of the late 20th century is similar. I’ve lived long enough to see the world change dramatically. In ways that seemed unimaginable, only 30 years ago.

Bob, my parents were born in 1943.

Younger lawyer got a document production in a Zip file.  He didn’t know what a Zip file is, and his Windows 11 machine doesn’t have a Zip utility.

I told him back in the late 20th Century, Zip compression was a preferred method of compressing files, and that I just happened to have a Zip utility on my ancient laptop.

“Wow things really used to be complicated.”

That’s why we put in the firepit in the backyard. Where it’s at we only have one person we could bother and she never has said a thing. Privacy fence, garage and a lot of yard on the other sides. We get it going around 8:30 and end around 3 or 4. Play pong, disk golf and just jam good country playlists

The only magazine I collected was Heavy Metal:

I had a neighbor growing up who ran a small shop called the magazine rack downtown. What made this place special was that he practically hoarded magazines from when his dad ran the place, so you could go there to find just about anything you were looking for. The man was the major contributor to my skin bin. But me and my gf would lie in my backyard in the shade and thumb through those pages, with a soda and a snack. Had to hide the less tame covered ones from my mom, but I found the two boxes of the older ones, and added them to my shelf with the ones I had up to 2018 when they stopped printing.

Saturday me and my wife decided to relive those halcyon days by sitting on the patio reliving those days. It was just about the only thing we could do back in the day with my mother who always had something to do in the kitchen, whose window had a clear view of the entire back yard.

My daughter picked up a copy I had just read and was all confused as to what it was about. I facepalmed so hard that I swear my ancestors had red marks on their faces.

"Baby girl, there was no point to the magazine, it was basically comics, stories and good art."

"Its so old."

"Go to your room."

I had to get clever in hiding my skin bin/heavy metal stash. So I would buy those video game magazines, remove the insides, and use the cover to hide  my hoard. My brothers and sister would always snitch me out if I did not hide it like that. I was fourteen when my dad finally put a stop to my moms room raids. He told her that he cant keep paying high water bills because his oldest son liked to whack it in privacy. So playboy was okay, and heavy metal, but not penthouse or hustler. She was always afraid I would get the wrong idea about sex. Welp, I think I might have proven her right though.

Yes.   Leif Garrett.  My sister had a poster on her wall.  Later when she moved to the basement, he was stapled to the rafters above her bed with a few other that were her heart throbs.  Including Shaun Cassidy.
