After a month of staying home watching my city burn, I finally went back to my favorite wildlife refuge in Wisconsin. Here's a few of the pics I captured.
A Trumpeter Swan showing off it's huge wing span. Actually this one was calmly feeding on the lake bottom when another swan came up behind it and tapped it's butt. Displeasure at the interruption was shown.

A Yellow Headed Blackbird...haven't seen one of these guys for a few years. Usually I'd find them perched on a cattail. For some reason this one was working the ground. Kept hopping from the road to the grass back and forth for quite awhile before flying away.

Some nice Water Lily's were in bloom near where I was shooting the above bird. So, here's a flower for the ladies.

This pair of Sand Hill Cranes stayed grounded while I snapped away. Usually they fly when a car come close. I was hoping maybe they were not flying because they had a colt (chick) near by. I've never gotten a picture of a colt and only seen one once, but it disappeared before I could raise the camera.
If these guys had one, they were keeping it hidden in the grass.

Thanks for viewing.

I've always loved your nature photo posts, and especially love this one, since it provides a little window into the real world for everyone who has been shut in for the past three months.

Great photos. Thanks.

Thanks Miss B. I never thought about that aspect of posting my pics. Maybe I should start a photo of the day thread. :D

I would LOVE that! And I'm sure many other people here would also love it!
Go for it!
Meanwhile, there's a pair of sandhill cranes in the Central Park Zoo. While they're gray and not tan as in your picture (a different subspecies?), they're beautiful, and whenever I've seen them they seem very conscious of each other, and conscious of he people watching, almost as if they're performing.

Yes, Sand Hill Cranes are a soft gray. When they arrive in the spring, one of the first things the cranes do is daub the reddish mud of the area all over. They can then blend in with their surroundings. Nature's camo.
I love that they're so ancient. Fossils have been found going back millions of years. It's like the last of the dinosaurs.

I'm sure you know this, but sandhill cranes live for about 20 years, and they essentially mate for life. And the cool dances they do, which were originally believed to be mating dances, include much more than that. A docent at the zoo explained how they use it for determining boundaries, forming relationships with other cranes, and in more efficiently rearing their young.
It's beautiful, and amazing!

Wow, great pics, msslave.
Two things I learnt today. Never heard of either a yellow headed blackbird or a docent (thanks MissB, I had to google it) ;D
Our european blackbird is a different family, it's classified along with thrushes (make that 3 things I learnt).

Miss B said she'd seen gray Sand Hill Cranes in a zoo. I replied that the ones shown had rubbed reddish mud on themselves to blend in with the ground. This starts to wear off towards the end of the summer and by fall they're back to gray.
Here's a shot from a fall gathering that shows their gray color and the dance they engage in which included tossing sticks and other objects into the air.

Beautiful photo MS. I've viewed them very up-close. At daddy's home in Florida, they come right up to the lanai and poke holes in the screens with their beaks. I was reading a couple of years ago and I thought I was going to be attached.

Good point. And does Dan know about this attachment?

Attacked!
hahaha
And the other day in another post I typed, "Suck" instead of "Such". My mind is always in the gutter.

Ah...Jules going all Freudian on us. ;D

And yet, the gutter is a beautiful place for her mind to be.
I'm sure Dan agrees...

Gotta love KB. I post a thread with some of natures beautiful creations and...
We end up in the Freeking gutter!
Oh Well...as Miss B says, the gutter can be a beautiful place. :emot_laughing:

I first felt guilty for hijacking your thread in a descent to the gutter. But now that you've joined in, I don't feel so bad.
Besides, Watcher started it!

What would we do if we didn't have Watcher to blame things on. ;D
