When I was in grade school we lived in an old house passed down as a wedding gift from my grandparents on my father's side. It had the old-fashioned hissing steam radiators powered by a coal-burning furnace. We used the coal ash for traction on icy sidewalks. In those days coal ash was also used on residential driveways year-round, later supplanted by crushed stone, later supplanted by concrete for the rich and asphalt for the suburban cheeseboxes.

All that by way of introduction: two houses away and at the top of a hill was the old farmer's big house, which used a wood-burning furnace. He spent much of the year cutting big logs--tree trunks of two to four feet in diameter. He did this in his side yard, sitting on a milk crate, pushing and pulling on an eight-foot long two-man cross-cut saw, except there was nobody on the other end. He ran his own milk route when he was young, milk bottle delivered to your doorstep every morning, but by my time his son had taken that over. On winter mornings on my way to school I would see bottles of milk with the paper cap sitting atop a three-inch cylinder of milk ice pushed up from the neck of the bottle. My father told me he had his own cow when he was a boy, and his own small milk route which he ran before he started his school day. The proceeds went mainly into the family coffer, but he was allowed to use some of it for his pocket money. Back in the '20s you could load your pockets with penny candy that actually cost a penny. But his money went mainly to buying Lucky Strike cigarettes, which he had the habit of by the age of nine. I would guess a pack of cigarettes in those days might have cost a dime. He died of lung cancer in his eighties.

But what I wanted to say was every winter morning when I left for school, as soon as I stepped out the front door, there would be the gray sky, a little sting in the nostrils from the cold, and a delicious aroma in the air of wood smoke from the farmer at the top of the hill. The only thing better than that was to go to the bakery for fresh bread, which came out of a wood-burning oven. You'd smell the wood smoke as you got near the bakery, then the aroma of fresh bread, and the combination of the two in close succession, that was a great way to stoke a boy's appetite.

Their sister Kim was married to a guy that I was on shift with and played hockey with. He, like the aforementioned Jimmy, was a goalie. We used to tease him about his puck stopping abilities by bringing sunscreen to our games to cover his red-light affected neck. ;D

Back when I was 10 or 11, I played hockey against Brent and Duane Sutter and Stan Smyl.

So, on the topic of this thread, if I haven't already said it --- I love hockey.

Getting back to hockey, I love hockey too. I actually dated an NHL player for a few months after my divorce. No body famous but still was great fun. Hockey players love to party,lol. Got to meet some star players too!

They invited everybody they could find who ever played for the Oilers. As they are bringing the players out, I shouted out -- Hey, I know that guy!! Moe Lemay who played a total of 80 or so games over 2 years was a guy I used to party with when he was playing junior for the Ottawa 67s.

I love having a brother who will show up with little to no notice to help find a leak in the garage ceiling.

...I love flipping through the advertisements in the paper. (going to Target today to get my niece some swimsuits before they're all picked over).
...I can read my Kindle with no interruptions.
...we usually get a visitor or 2 that comes by to see my brother in law.

My mom had a lot of 78's. She brought them with her when she came to the US. She loved music. Mom would have been 68.

Audio Theater, eh. We called it radio back when I was little. I still have vague memories of shows before TV. Mostly things like "The Shadow Knows" and the sound of Fibber Mcgee's closet being opened. There is one show I still remember. It was Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. Instead of a western they were called in to investigate a missing scientist friend. He disappeared from a locked lab where he was working on something the fell to earth. It ended leaving the impression that somehow aliens came for him. I was pre-school then so it must have been some show to have left such a vivid memory. There is nothing more powerful than the "theater of the mind". The video can be a distraction if the story is really good.

I'll have to check into this. I listed to audio books all the time, so this could be a new outlet for me. Thanks CG for helping an old guy find something new. :emot_kiss:

Did you know that the very first Girl Scout (in Canada Girl Guides) cookies were home baked by a troop in Winnipeg, Manitoba?

Personally, I love the Oreo type cookies. From a love of cookies perspective, my wife and I could keep a troop financed for a year. However, from the budgetary side of things, we only buy 3 or 4 boxes. And put them in the freezer. We love frozen Oreos.

Actually, that's a perfect description.

His closest competitor is the New Year's Day concert at the Musikverein in Vienna, which has the advantage of a mostly Strauss waltzes and marches program, which gets the blue blood flowing through the veins of what's left of Austro-Hungarian royalty (quite a lot, actually, because they multiply through the generations) who add the final touch of glamor to the whole affair. Filthy rich people having the time of their lives--what more could a po' boy ask for?

It's one of my favorite smells. I remember as far back as 6 years old and my mother shopping at A&P (now belly up grocery store). Near the checkout registers they would grind up the coffee beans for customers. I would ask my mother if I could sit over by the machine while she checked out. That lingering smell all around the machine. Bonus when they would grind up some beans while I sat there.
