Title: Doctor Who
Post by: Athos131 on February 01, 2012, 01:12:08 PM
One of the longest running programs ever, and one of my favorite.

P.S.  Elisabeth Sladen, who played the iconic Sarah Jane Smith, would have been 66 today.

I myself am a HUGE Doctor Who fan.

I have a few of the DVDs, some of the novels and more than a hundred Doctor Who related audio dramas from Big Finish Productions. I also got a Tom Baker style scarf for X-Mas and today ordered a Indiana Jones fedora to go with it.

Funny, you mention Sarah Jane though, someone just posted the Babelcolor tribute to her today on another forum and mustn't of realized it would of been her b-day.

Just try not to get me going, I could probably go on about Doctor Who forever.  ;D

Damn.....Sorry Folks, But I really like Doctor WHO as well.
Of course I like science fiction anyway, but Dr. WHO is fun to watch.
The Old ones I get to see as reruns,  but of those I "really" liked TOM BAKER (with his 8 foot long scarf) as Dr. WHO.

Love,

Liz

I don't want you to get the wrong idea and think I'm being a douche or anything but I don't think his scarves were ever 8 feet. His first, I believe, was 15 and by his last two seasons (Douglas Adams' season as script editor and the one after [beginning Jonathon Nathan-Turner's reign as producer] which the outfit was mostly red and blue) he was wearing ones stretched out to about 22.

Mine is 17 feet long. I'm just under 6ft and wear mine with a loop just past my crotch, one tight around my neck and the ends fall just past my knees. Mine isn't from a particular season and more "Doctor-style" in a different stitch (mine curls inwards and thus not flat.)

Anywho, my three favorite Doctors have always been Tom Baker, Colin Baker and William Hartnell. Matt Smith is good but I have too many problems with the new series. I guess I prefer the more anthology approach where it was more about the individual situations, monsters and politics and not the Doctor's companions. But seeing as I don't have the luxury of reruns, I'm quite far behind in DVD releases and just glad I've seen what I have and the couple on Youtube. I watched The Happiness Patrol on Youtube years back and absolutely loved it (one of only three McCoy TV serials I've seen.)

[geek]

I once recall a clip of Tom Baker asking people to send in guesses as to how long his scarf was, and if they guessed right, he would send them a scarf.  He never revealed it, nor have I ever done any research as to how long his scarf was.  Obviously as is warddrobe changed, it's only natural the scarf length varied.

Personally, I will always be more partial to Classic Doctor Who than the new series.  I do enjoy the 3 actors who have recently portrayed our favorite Gallifreyan, especially David Tennant.  The "modernization" of the series at times has left me many a time saying to myself "that's not very Doctorly."  One of the biggest examples -and disappointments- is how there always seemed to be underlying sexual tones with the Doctor and his many of his companions.  To me the Doctor always was and should be a father figure, not someone Rose wanted to shag in the Zero Room.

It was either Terrance Dicks or Barry Letts who once said the actor playing the Doctor has to be someone who you would want to watch even if they were doing nothing.  In my opinion no one did that better than Tom Baker.  My favorite stories are from the Philip Hinchcliffe era and it was the peak of Robert Holmes' hey day I believe.  Tom will always be the best, but I thought those two contributed to his greatness. I only own two Hartnell serials and one Troughton -that chopped up VHS version of The Invasion- but I have been told they more than held their own weight.

If you had to ask me to pick a top three, it would be Tom Baker, Jon Pertwee and David Tennant.

I totally agree, the sexual undertones is way too much. Give me wobbly sets any day! The Hinchcliffe/Holmes period you mentioned was indeed a high point in Doctor Who. The more gothic tones really worked well. I had to stop reading Doctor Who Magazine because of the unfair treatment between the two. It seemed like no matter what, the classic series was being written off as crud while new stories (including even Fear Her) couldn't be praised enough.

I hate Martha and Rose with a passion. Donna was the only one who worked for me. Little did I know Martha and Rose would be dwarfed by River Song. *GROAN*

One of the worst un-Doctor-y things they ever did though involved Rose. I HATED her in love with him but then they had to go and give her a clone of him. Errr. To make that even worse, while it didn't make it, I once read that there was some plan on giving Rose a piece of TARDIS coral in their farewell. A coral that would be able to grow her own TARDIS. Yeah, every Doctor before Eccleston probably would of beaten Tennant's Doctor to a pulp for even thinking that. Hell, Peter Cushing's Doctor was better than Tennant's to me sometimes.

Of the first two Doctors, I own 10 DVDs between them including The Invasion. I like the old Cybermen and just had to order Invasion when it was released because of the Flash animation. I might have to order Reign of Terror when that's released too so I can see that animation (not by the same people though.) There is more than enough that doesn't hold up though. Big Finish made a boxset of readings of lost stories of the first two and while Hartnell's Alexander the Great was great, the Second's was awful. I haven't seen Krotons but I can't imagine anything being worse than some of the stuff in Prison in Space. Even for how much Krotons is despised.

And if anyone is feeling particularly nerdy and bored, a history of the scarf:

Ugh.  Rose with her own Tardis?  Who's gonna pilot it?  The only companion who might have been more worthless was Jo Grant.  Possibly Adric and Tegan.  I can't watch much of the Davison era without muttering to myself.

Frankly I thought Tennant was a victim of circumstance at times.  If they hadn't written him into a corner with the whole romance rubbish, he had an edge to him at times.  His last two seasons -excluding the fanwank of Stolen Planet- showed what kind of doctor he could be when he wasn't gimped.  I thought Midnight was a pretty awesome concept.

That was Paul McGann and a bit before my time. I got on with the beginning of the new series with Eccleston on SciFi (back when it was SciFi and not SyFy.) Thought it looked awesome and dug further to find out more. After watching a few episodes, I bought Tomb of the Cybermen (something about owning a serial that was previously "lost") and ever since then I haven't turned back as I fell deeper in love.

Anyways yeah, Paul McGann did the FOX TV movie (that bombed) with Eric Roberts as The Master. It was originally supposed to be a pilot but it never got off the ground. The series while recognizing him succeeding McCoy would of been a complete remake than continuation (HEY, IT IS AMERICA AFTER ALL!)

Big Finish Productions, a audio drama company in the UK is currently making audios featuring all of the Doctors and their companions, rotating them in and out with their original companions and BF's own created companions. Davison, Baker and McCoy started off the initial DW run before having McGann join in a couple of years later. Now starting this year, after years of refusal, Tom Baker has joined up and having his own one-disc monthly adventures.

BF is great because while audio dramas are not for everyone, they do give a chance to redeem previous incarnations. Paul only had one film and a bunch of books but with his audio dramas, we are allowed to "see" more of his character and what he could of been like if the failed pilot was a continuation and not a reboot. And he is pretty much loved by the BF follower, myself included.

Hell, within the audio drama fanbase, Colin Baker and even Mel Bush has gained some popularity and considered much stronger than they ever were on TV. Colin, I believe, is often voted the best audio drama Doctor performing.

Be glad Athos, as you can see I can't turn off the [geek][/geek]

Yeah, his season with Donna was much better but far from perfect. Tennant was great for having some real gems (amongst them Midnight and Blink) and some real stinkers.

In his last year, the year of the specials, I hated every episode except Waters of Mars. How those other four be lumped together with Waters of Mars is beyond my comprehension.

Tennant could of given Tom Baker a run for his money if he was written for by Moffat than Davies. (And didn't include any on this River Song/Amy Pond nonsense....)

I thought the last couple seasons would have been much better had Amy Pond been played as someone single, not romantically involved with the Doctor, and River Song was pretty much ignored.  Amy was an independent thinker much like Sarah Jane, the only problem being Moffat thinks people want adult overtones with what should be an adventure series and not romance.

I wouldn't say Amy is romantically involved with The Doctor, River Song is. Amy has Rory and more infatuated with the lifestyle, mystery and sense of adventure. It would of been better if she had a smaller presence. I felt that the last couple of years were more like The Amy Pond Show than anything and the only thing that mattered was her and her family. I prefer The Doctor solving various problems, with the new format and Amy it seemed that instead all he was ever trying to do was solve her problems. I got the feeling that she was the center of the universe and nothing happens unless she is somehow involved.

Karen Gillan: Why She's Leaving Doctor Who

http://tv.ign.com/articles/121/1218789p1.html

The actress tell us why this coming season will be her last and what it's like saying goodbye to Amy Pond.

Production is just about to begin on Season 7 of Doctor Who, which will mark a big change for the series. As announced late last year, this will be the final season for Amy Pond and Rory Williams, who will depart the series at some unspecified point in the next season.

Recently, I spoke to Karen Gillan about her TV movie, We'll Take Manhattan, where she plays famous 1960s model Jean Shrimpton. I'll have more on that part of our interview when the movie premieres in the US, but our conversation also turned to Gillan's impending departure from Doctor Who. While she was sworn to secrecy on any specifics regarding how many episodes she'll be appearing in or how Amy comes to leave, she had plenty to say about what it's like to repare to say goodbye to the series.

IGN TV: How did you come to the decision that this coming season of Doctor Who would be your last?

Karen Gillan: Actually, I called [executive producer/showrunner] Steven Moffat and arranged the dinner and then basically told him roughly when I wanted to go. He told me where the story was at and where it was going and then we kind of together came up with it. So it was really pleasant, actually. We had a lovely dinner and just kind of discussed what we both want and what's going to happen and then came to the decision. That was ages ago, so I've known for ages!

IGN: Why did you think it was getting to be the right time?

Gillan: I wanted to go on a high. Also, Steven Moffat comes up with endless, amazing ideas anyway, but I wanted to make sure that I went on a high when the character was at her prime. There's just something quite nice and appealing about that to me. I don't know… It just felt right! I like to go on instinct.

Doctor Who: Casting the Next Companion

IGN: You can't say how many more episodes you'll be in…

Gillan: I'm not allowed to say! But I know they're going to be damn good. It's so exciting.

IGN: So Steven's told you how she's going to leave?

Gillan: I think it's the best ever. I can't say anything, but oh god, I'm dying to say something!

IGN: Are there certain things you'd like to see happen, as far as closure for her?

Gillan: I want to see her go with everything that she wants, because initially, when we met her, she was just seeking what she wants, you know what I mean? And she was kind of in this lost, transitional period, where she didn't have a stable life. So I just want to see her get what she wants.

- BBC America
Amy crosses the Pond! Karen Gillan during Doctor Who's American-set adventure
IGN: We've seen some Doctor Who companions in the past leave and then make guest appearances. Would you be up for that if the door was open?

Gillan: I really, really want to have a final exit and then be able to look back on that as a final exit. I don't know... I just don't want to take away from that exit by making cameos in the future. I'd quite like it to be final and for people just to remember it fondly.

IGN: Are you hoping for a happy ending for her and Rory?

Gillan: I don't even know what I'm hoping for. I just know that whatever I hope for, I read it and it's always better!

IGN: Here's my most important question: Have you discussed with Steven the idea for The Doctor/Amy body switch episode I suggested last summer?

Gillan: [Laughs] Oh my god! It's in the pipeline! It's gonna happen.

[Editor's Note: I feel I need to add that Karen was clearly joking - I don't think anyone should hold their breath for a body switch episode!]

IGN: You haven't begun filming your final season yet, so it's sort of a long goodbye that's beginning now. What's it like for you to begin preparing for your time on the show to come to a close?

Gillan: It's so weird. It's just so weird. I was 21 when I started this job and I didn't really know what I was getting into. And then it just went crazy. It was this whirlwind. I'm coming out of the other end of it and I feel like a different person almost. And I just had the best time of my entire life doing this job. Honestly, I've got to say that. So obviously I'm going to be sad to be going and I'm going to be leaving my best mates behind. But you know, all things come to a natural end and that's what the show's about: Change. And you just kind of have to embrace it and go with it.

IGN: This could obviously change as you shoot your final episodes, but is there a favorite Amy Pond episode or moment you've played so far?

Gillan: Oooh. I love "The Eleventh Hour." It's just got a special place in my heart because it was my first episode with Matt [Smith] and I loved the whole introduction of Amy Pond. That's one of my favorite parts about her, that we see her as a child and then she gets abandoned. I think that's something that people can really relate to with the character – that sort of sense of abandonment. It's a common issue. And that's why she's a little bit odd. So yeah, that has to be my favorite Amy Pond story.

IGN: Was it strange for you the first time you saw an Amy Pond toy?

Gillan: Yes! It is weird seeing a doll of yourself. [Laughs] I'd be lying if I said it wasn't. It's the weirdest thing. And now there are a few different versions out, which is even weirder.

IGN: Collect them all!

Gillan: [Laughs] Yeah, right. Just have them in my house!

IGN: Do you think you guys might be coming back to San Diego Comic Con this summer?

Gillan: I would love to! If there's an invite, I will take it. I mean that was one of the best experiences ever. We had like 4000 people with Sonic Screwdrivers. How does that ever happen!? So yeah, if the option was there, I would definitely do that.

IGN: What do you think it is that has helped Doctor Who continue this long?

Gillan: I really think, coming back to my leaving, it's the re-invention, it's the change. It's the constant change. That's the key to longevity, I really think. Like if you look at -- I don't know, weird example -- but Madonna, she constantly reinvents herself, which is why I think she's lasted so long. And I think it's the same idea. It's just reinvention. Regeneration.

- BBC America
Karen Gillan as Amy Pond in Doctor Who
IGN: What do you think it is about Amy that has struck a chord with her fans?

Gillan: I don't know. It's kind of hard to look at it objectively, when you're playing the character. But what appeals to me about her is she's really strong, but she's really vulnerable at the same time. That's what's interesting. She's kind of got this strong exterior, but a really sort of vulnerable inside. I think people can relate to that. And, again, the sense of abandonment is a strong theme with her. And she can just hold her own amongst the guys. I think she's a good role model in that sense for girls.

IGN: You're playing a model in We'll Take Manhattan, so I found it amusing that we had a glimpse of one possible incarnation of Amy this past year where she was modeling.

Gillan: I know! I was so shocked when I read that in the script. I was like, 'What?!'

IGN: You've had the opportunities to do so many versions of Amy and possibilities for her, which I imagine has been a great part of the role.

Gillan: Yeah. I have to say, the weirdest version of Amy I've ever played is the model one! Honestly, I was having those pictures taken, thinking, "This does not feel like Amy at all!" It was weird. [Laughs]

That is some nice undies. I wouldn't care what the girl was wearing on top, I would love to actually see a girl wearing a pair those. Ah hell, I would even go pervy and buy a worn pair of those!

This reminds me of something though, attractive women and Doctor Who. It's a bit strange seeing these characters that were portrayed by a bunch of old guys being cosplayed by women but they are AWESOME! There are the really dedicated and awesome like a woman who adapted the colors of Colin Baker's Sixy into a dress that resembles something like the old aristocratic French dresses to just plain drop dead sexy, a woman as Matt Smith's 11th. That one sent shivers down my back the first time I saw it and still does. The sexy short hair cut, the tight skirt, the tweed coat.....

So if you have the chance and can appreciate not only the loveliness of the woman but also the art that is cosplaying, I would totally recommend this link. The work that can go into these outfits are amazing. I've seen a post before on a DW forum about this before but it's nicer to just have one nice collected page of pictures.

Doctor Who's latest companion is unveiled

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-17456505

Former Emmerdale actress Jenna-Louise Coleman has landed the role of the Time Lord's new companion in Doctor Who, the BBC has confirmed.

Producer Steven Moffat announced the actress will replace Karen Gillan's character Amy Pond when she leaves the show in the next series.

Coleman, 25, has also appeared in Waterloo Road and Julian Fellowes' four part mini-series Titanic.

The star said: "I am beyond excited. I can't wait to get cracking."

Coleman, who will make her first appearance in the Christmas special, added that she is a "huge fan" of the show.

The actress, who is from Blackpool, revealed she auditioned alongside Matt Smith, who plays the 11th Doctor.

"It was fun and I felt like we were in it together."

Smith is set to return as the Time Lord in the new series of Doctor Who, which starts later this year.

"It always seems impossible when you start casting these parts, but when we saw Matt and Jenna together, we knew we had our girl. She's funny and clever and exactly mad enough to step on board the Tardis," Moffat said.

"It's not often the Doctor meets someone who can talk even faster than he does, but it's about to happen. Jenna is going to lead him his merriest dance yet. And that's all you're getting for now.

"Who she's playing, how the Doctor meets her, and even where he finds her, are all part of one of the biggest mysteries the Time Lord ever encounters. Even by the Doctor's standards, this isn't your usual boy meets girl."

The BBC said the Doctor will meet Coleman's character in a "dramatic turn of events as the show builds towards its enormous, climactic 50th anniversary year".

Filming for the seventh series of the sci-fi drama started last month in Wales.

The new series will contain 14 episodes, featuring "new monsters and some familiar foes", split across two years.

In December, Gillian announced she would be leaving the popular programme, saying it had been a mutual decision between herself and producers.

"We both opened up about where we were at with it and then came to the conclusion that this was the best time to go," she said.

Eh.....

A bit disappointed that they DW is doing the same thing they have been doing since '63. I sort of wish they would mix it up and maybe have a older companion but then again it is still far too early to say anything about this new one or the direction the show will be taking with the leave of Amy Pond.

On another forum, there was a discussion about this. Someone made a half-hearted statement though about how Rory is under used and should come back as a villain. I wholeheartedly agreed. Since Pond's last episode is with the Weeping Angels, she should be turned to stone or something leaving Rory to go all Mr. Freeze on The Doctor's ass.

Best ever Doctors?

Tom Baker
Jon Pertwee

What do you think?

On a WHO podcast, I once hear, "my favorite Doctor is the one I'm currently watching at the time." It's a perfect sentiment because there is no "best"- just least favorites.

My least favorite classic Doctors are Peter Davison followed by McCoy but by no means do I hate them.

Tom Baker is fantastic, there is a reason why I have a kinda-styled scarf and fedora. Also, there is the whole being voted best by DWM with the exception of a couple of years. (McCoy once and Tennant, a couple I think.) Note: I just ordered the new audio series by Big Finish starring Tom and Leela so I can't say if he has maintained that awesomeness but we will see. I'm hoping to start listening to them this weekend. So hooray to the return of the 4th Doctor even if it's in the form of audio dramas!

Pertwee is good but perhaps not as great in my opinion as Troughton and Hartnell. His companions aren't quite up to par as some of the others in my opinion either. I love Katy Manning and Caroline John, they are just not my favorites. Hell, I'm not even that big of fan of Sarah Jane Smith to be honest.

Another problem is the scope of fan base and medium itself. If you just go by TV then a good chance your least will be Colin Baker (a.k.a Sixey) but he is absolutely fantastic currently in audio format. Much better stories to work with. I haven't seen McGann's film yet but his audios also prove that he is a really good Doctor. From what I've heard, McGann would luck out on the whole "best" thing too. UNFAIRLY, I might add.

"Favorite" is a trick question. There is no best. They all have their pros and cons. Their good stories and their bad.

... actually, maybe the worst is Peter Cushing for his two '60's Dalek films. Both films just work so much better in TV serial format BEFORE tampering.

RIP Caroline John, AKA Elizabeth Shaw.

http://www.doctorwhonews.net/2012/06/dwn210612123117-caroline-john-1940-2012.html

The actress Caroline John - who played companion Liz Shaw - has died aged 71, it was announced today. The news came via a tweet from the BBC on the Doctor Who Twitter feed.

She passed away on 5th June but the news was not made public by the family until after the funeral took place yesterday in south-west London. The cause of death is unknown as yet.

Born in York in September 1940, John trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama then worked in theatre, touring with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre.

In 1969, she won the part of scientist and companion Dr Elizabeth Shaw opposite Jon Pertwee as the Doctor when the show was revamped for its seventh season, seeing the title character exiled to Earth. Liz Shaw appeared as a regular character for one season in 1970, with John playing two roles in the final story of that year, Inferno, the other character being Shaw's parallel-universe counterpart, Section Leader Elizabeth Shaw.

After leaving the series she had many theatre roles, and in 1982 she appeared in the BBC TV adaptation of The Hound of the Baskervilles, which starred Tom Baker as Sherlock Holmes. John returned to Doctor Who in 1983 for the 20th-anniversary special The Five Doctors, in which she played a fake Shaw. She reprised the role of Shaw for the 1993 BBC Children In Need special Dimensions In Time.

Married to Geoffrey Beevers, John appeared as Madame Salvadori with him in the Big Finish audio drama Dust Breeding, which was released in 2001. She also portrayed Liz Shaw for Big Finish for four stories in the Companion Chronicles range, starting with The Blue Tooth in 2007 and most recently in Binary, which was released just three months ago in March. In addition, she appeared as Shaw in the straight-to-video P.R.O.B.E. stories of the 1990s, which were written by Mark Gatiss and co-starred Pertwee, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, and Sylvester McCoy.

Paying tribute, Companion Chronicles producer David Richardson said:
Carry was the first assistant I ever saw in Doctor Who, and through meeting and working with her many times she remained a favourite over the years. She was an accomplished actor, and the most lovely, warm person you could ever hope to spend time with. Carry loved working on the Companion Chronicles and came in to record what would be her final contribution, The Last Post, on January 26.
Colin Baker tweeted:
Devastated to hear that the lovely, talented, wise and gentle Caroline John is no longer with us. So sad. Thoughts with Geoffrey and family.
while Mark Gatiss also paid tribute via Twitter:
Very sad to hear that the lovely Caroline John has passed away. RIP.
and on the official site Steven Moffat wrote:
Caroline was a brilliant actress and in her role as Liz Shaw, a tremendous co-star for Jon Pertwee in his first year as the Doctor. She was not just a sidekick but a scientist in her own right and a match for the universe's number one know-all. The Doctor's companions should never be his assistants - they're the people who keep him on his toes, and that's what Caroline did. From everyone at the show, our thoughts go out to Caroline’s family.
Big Finish executive producer Nicholas Briggs said:
I met Carry many years ago while filming. She was the Detective Inspector and I was her assistant. We had such a laugh working together, and when we came to record a Myth Makers interview a few weeks later, we just couldn't stop giggling. She was a lovely lady who was always so much fun to be with, and even though she could enjoy a saucy joke or two, there was also something of a delightful prudishness about her. When I think of her smile and her warmth now, it brightens my heart.
John and Beevers also starred together in the Agatha Christie's Poirot episode Problem At Sea on ITV in 1989. In addition, the couple had roles in the Channel 4 adaptation of the political thriller A Very British Coup in 1988. They had three children: a daughter, Daisy, and sons Ben and Tom.

Her most recent screen appearances included the 2003 rom-com film Love Actually (written and directed by Richard Curtis and featuring Bill Nighy as well as Steven Moffat's Curse of Fatal Death Doctors Rowan Atkinson and Hugh Grant) and the ITV drama series Vital Signs (with Gugu Mbatha-Raw) in 2006 and the BBC daytime drama Doctors (with Malcolm Tierney and Matthew Chambers) in 2008.

She also narrated the audiobook of Elisabeth Sladen's autobiography, which was released last November, and narrated the audiobooks of Doctor Who And The Auton Invasion (2008) and Doctor Who And The Cave Monsters (2007), which were adaptations of her first and second Doctor Who stories respectively.

Doctor Who actress Mary Tamm dies

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-18995370

Doctor Who star Mary Tamm, who played companion Romana alongside Tom Baker, has died aged 62.

The actress, who was born in Bradford, West Yorkshire, fought a long battle with cancer and died in hospital in London.

Agent Barry Langford, who confirmed the news, said she had a "zest for life".

"She was a darling companion and wonderfully witty and kind," said Tom Baker, who played the fourth Doctor. "I'm so sorry to hear of her death."

Tamm's stage and screen career also included films The Odessa File and The Likely Lads, as well as recurring roles in EastEnders and Brookside.

"She was a fantastic actress," said Langford, who was her agent for 22 years.
Mary Tamm in The Ribos Operation Tamm joined the Doctor and K-9 on a quest for the Key to Time

"She played stage parts of such range, parts that would take your breath away. She could play any role, and do so wonderfully."

Tamm, who lived in London, had been suffering from cancer for 18 months.

The actress played Romana, a Time Lady from the Doctor's home planet of Gallifrey, alongside Tom Baker's Doctor and his robot dog K-9 in a season of six connected stories in 1978-9.

Her first story, The Ribos Operation, saw her join the Tardis crew on a quest to find the six scattered segments of the Key to Time.

Romana's other adventures included a story called The Pirate Planet, written by Douglas Adams, and The Stones of Blood, which was the 100th story since the sci-fi show started in 1963.

When Tamm left Doctor Who the role of Romana was taken over by Lalla Ward.

Tamm trained at Rada, beginning her career at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, alongside Derek Jacobi, Joan Sims and Ronnie Barker.

Her stage work included the roles of Amanda in Private Lives and Beverley in Abigail's Party.

She moved on to work in television and film. Her first feature film was Tales That Witness Madness, with Kim Novak.

More recently, she starred in Wire in the Blood, Paradise Heights and Jonathan Creek on TV.

Actress Helen Lederer, a friend of Tamm's, said: "Mary was such an energised, talented woman with a great twinkle in her eye and she was so very beautiful."

Tamm leaves behind husband Marcus Ringrose, daughter Lauren and seven-year-old grandson Max.

Mr Ringrose paid tribute to her "sheer talent".

"Mary was truly beautiful in every way. On set and offstage, her earthy northern humour and self-deprecating wit brightened every occasion."

"We will miss her every day."

Her agent Langford revealed that Tamm had been saddened by the recent deaths of contemporaries Elisabeth Sladen, who played Sarah Jane Smith in Doctor Who, and Angharad Rees, who died last weekend.

He said: "All of these people who she knew were going."

Fuck you cancer, fuck you.

Either “Romana” or “Fred”: Remembering Mary Tamm

http://www.tor.com/blogs/2012/07/either-qromanaq-or-qfredq-remembering-mary-tamm

Mary Tamm, best known for playing the Doctor’s companion, Romana, on Doctor Who from 1978 to 1979, died yesterday after a protracted struggle with cancer. Romana was a Time Lady from Gallifrey. Like the Doctor, she had the ability to regenerate into a new body, and so Mary Tamm’s Romana is known in fandom as Romana I to differentiate her from Lalla Ward’s version of the character (Romana II).

Romana was brought to the TARDIS by the White Guardian, an elemental force for good, to aid the Doctor in his quest to locate and unite the components of a supreme Macguffin. This arc was collectively known as “The Key to Time.” (Guess the Macguffin’s name....) Doctor Who hadn’t really done ’series arc’ plots like this before, which makes series 16 interesting given that arc-based plotting would emerge as a key element of many modern genre shows, including New Who. The experiment succeeded due to strong script-editing and writing from Douglas Adams (of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy fame) and a great rapport between Tom Baker’s exasperating, disheveled, canny Doctor and Mary Tamm’s Romana: incredibly brilliant, but inexperienced and “by-the-book.”

How is it that the lighting gently caresses Mary Tamm and simultaneously swaggers up to Tom Baker and roughs up his pores? He looks bemused by just this question.

Romana is initially cold and brittle, severely lacking in people skills—though granted, Four is never going to make Miss Congeniality either. Romana’s so good at being a Time Lady (she obtained a triple first at the academy, whereas the Doctor failed his first go at the exams) that she fails to see the strictures their culture places on her, or to understand the potential value in doing things differently. The Doctor doesn’t so much tell her she’s wrong as serve as a savvier Falstaff to her Hal (if Falstaff was also somehow simultaneously Mr. Miyagi), showing her how the other half/rest of the universe lives and ultimately enabling her to rise to meet her own great promise. The unfolding plot and their developing relationship anchor a run of strong episodes. “The Ribos Operation,” “The Pirate Planet,” and “The Androids of Tara” are particularly well-pitched commedic adventure stories—provided you can overlook Romana’s Welcoming You To Munchkin Land costume in “Androids.” That just should be pitched. Her introduction in “The Ribos Operation” and her polite interest in tapestry embroidery in the face of peril in “Androids” are particularly good Romana moments.

Mary Tamm’s term as the Doctor’s companion is one of the strongest runs in the show’s, and televised sci-fi’s, history. If you haven’t given Classic Who a try, use this occasion to start with this arc, which can be enjoyed in and of itself. If you have already done so and are looking for new Romana content to enjoy, Big Finish will soon release a series of fourth Doctor and Romana audios, and Mary Tamm plays an important role in their usually excellent Gallifrey series.

Tamm’s death at 62 feels quite early, and particularly unfortunate as it follows on the heels of the deaths of Caroline John, Elisabeth Sladen and Nicholas Courtney last year. There’s a strangeness to non-genre news outlets’ obituaries for Doctor Who actors, born out of casual watchers’ vague recollections of the show. Comedian Toby Hadoke remembers in his standup “Moths Ate My Doctor Who Scarf”  that when Jon Pertwee (the third Doctor) died, the BBC’s own obituary almost disclaimed the actor. Pertwee was well-loved for his work on the long-running radio show The Navy Lark, for playing the title character in the children’s show Worzel Gummidge, and for creating a popular and iconic Doctor, yet all the BBC could dredge up was some “the sets wobbled, but gosh some silly children loved him” mealy-mouthed, palpably embarrassed excuse for a tribute. And, as Hadoke pointed out, it’s not even really factually correct — they were often done with a weather eye on the budget, but the sets only wobbled once in the Three Era, and only twice in the history of Classic Who. Of course, it’s obvious that television production has gotten more technically sophisticated since Classic Who was filmed. Thanks for that stunning critical observation, mate. But what does that have to do with the price of karate lessons on Venus?

Media outlets marked the passing of Elisabeth Sladen (popular companion Sarah Jane Smith) by talking about how Sarah Jane was the first competent, intelligent, female companion. These assessments erase the contribution of women like Jacqueline Hill (Barbara Wright), who played one of the Doctor’s initial companions—a passionate, clever, determined history teacher whose influence and friendship changed the Doctor’s personality forever, helping him become the character we know and enjoy throughout Classic and New Who. They also reduces the complexity of a character like Jo Grant, who immediately preceded Sarah Jane. Jo was young, and rather “girly.” She was also a capable intelligence operative who left the Doctor for a Nobel prize-winning scientist and a life in hardcore environmental activism. Treatments that forget previous companions in order to remember whoever’s just been lost not only prestige popular and personal nostalgic memory to a degree that’s at odds with journalistic standards of accuracy, they also misread the texts in question and impose a rather artificial Feminism of Firsts. The logic of “Elizabeth Sladen and/or Sarah Jane is important because she was the FIRST!! strong female companion!” denigrates other characters and actresses in order to make its (very true!) point that Sarah Jane is special and important to many viewers. Making Sarah Jane the Exceptional Woman doesn’t seem warranted, or particularly feminist.

Comments on Mary Tamm’s passing have been similarly reductive, having thus far made note of Romana’s being the first companion to have matched the Doctor intellectually, the first Time Lady companion, “the inspiration for River Song” (...because both are ladies with academic degrees of some form?), etc. While the fact that she was a Time Lady companion—assigned to keep the Fourth Doctor on task on an important “save the universe” mission—allowed Romana to interact with the Doctor in a unique and interesting way, she wasn’t the first Time Lady in the program (that was Susan, the TARDIS’s eponymous Unearthly Child, or if you don’t count her, Rodan on Gallifrey). And many characters, companions and otherwise, intellectually kept the Doctor on his toes before and after Romana.

Speaking of the dread Nekkerhats, and other poor fashion choices, behold Romana: representative of the Lollypop Guild! Also, you guys probably should have told Romana y’all were going to be LARPing, she’d have brought the Princess kit.

Romana isn’t awesome because she’s oh-so-much more intelligent/competent/feminist than other companions. She isn’t awesome in spite of the “campy crappyness” of her source text, or because she’s like some New Who character. Romana is awesome because she’s well-characterized—clever, arch, over-precious in a realistic way, eminently watchable—and within Tamm’s season she makes strong beginnings on an arc of growth. Her background is similar to the Doctor’s, but her worldview and ultimate goals are different than his. That provided an interesting counterpoint to and subversion of the Fourth Doctor’s bombastic monopolization of the narrative. She’s part of a series of very solid scripts. She’s part of Doctor Who’s tradition of excellent female characters. And Romana is awesome because Mary Tamm, whose well-pitched portrayal absolutely made Romana, was awesome.

As horrible as the Romana I costumes were, Tamm was my favorite Romana. She was just so beautiful.

On a personal note of being a fan, the big deciding factor of ordering these new 4th Doctor audio dramas is the fact that they got her in the studio to record a short series with Tom Baker. Scheduled to be released in January, the website made a mention about it and how she just finished wrapping up production a couple of months ago.

This has been a horrible year for Whovians everywhere. Far too many wonderful talent has passed on...

Science confirms ‘Doctor Who-type world, Gallifrey’

http://digitaljournal.com/article/331857

NASA has confirmed the existence of a real-universe analogue of Gallifrey, the fictional Time Lord planet that features in the BBC science-fiction drama series, Doctor Who.

According to an article in the Register, NASA came across what it calls a “transiting circumbinary multi-planet system” – in layman’s speak, “two worlds orbiting two suns” – using its Kepler planet-hunting telescope, and the Register likens to “Doctor Who’s Time Lord homeworld [of] Gallifrey – or alternatively the luxury-planet-builders’ planet Magrathea [from] The Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy”!

The Register reports the lead author of the study, Jerome Orosz – associate professor of astronomy at San Diego State University – as saying, “Each planet transits over the primary star, giving unambiguous evidence that the planets are real.”

Digital Journal's Andrew Moran first reported on the discovery in January of this year, but the full study report has now been accepted by and published in Science.

The new system, which has been named Kepler 47, has two stars circling each other every 7.5 days. One of them is similar in size to our sun, whereas the other is approximately one third its size.

The inner planet – Kepler-47b – is three times the size of our world, making it the smallest known transiting circumbinary planet, and it orbits the stars every 49 days. The second – Kepler-47c – lies in the habitable zone around the two suns.

The Register goes on to state that Kepler-47c is “slightly larger than Uranus and circles its stars every 303 days, making it the longest transiting planet currently known. The whole system lies about 5,000 light years away in the Cygnus constellation”.

The full report of NASA's twin-system discovery is published in Science.

The fictional Time Lord planet of Gallifrey resides in a binary star system within the constellation of Kasterborous. Although Doctor Who began in 1963, the name of the Doctor’s home planet was not revealed until his second regeneration in the ten-part story The War Games (1969).

Since then, exiled from his own people, the Doctor has returned to Gallifrey on only a few occasions – The Deadly Assassin (1976) The Invasion of Time (1978), Arc of Infinity (1983) and The Five Doctors (1983).

During the Time War, Gallifrey was time-locked and has only featured fully once since 2005, in David Tennant’s swansong as the Doctor, The End of Time 2010

The most nakedly emotional show on TV just might be the nerdy British series with time-traveling and aliens.

By June Thomas|Posted Friday, Aug. 31, 2012

Two strangers arrive in a rural village and befriend a depressed, lonely painter. They help him realize that his unique way of looking at the world isn’t due to madness; in fact, he has a special gift that will one day be truly appreciated. But when the visitors tell him they must depart, the artist takes to his bed and weeps bitterly. “When you leave—and everyone always leaves—I will be left once more with an empty heart and no hope,” he wails.

If you thought that was a storyline from a Lifetime movie of the week, or some other estrogen-infused feelings fest, you’re dead wrong. In fact, it’s the plot of “Vincent and the Doctor,” an episode of Doctor Who, the long-running nerd-favorite of a BBC series about a Time Lord who roams the universe, accompanied by a string of companions, in a time-and-space machine known as the TARDIS. Doctor Who has been thrilling geeks and sci-fi fans since 1963, but since it was revived in 2005, it has become not just a mainstream hit but, fascinatingly, one of the most openly emotional, soul-stirring shows on television.

Doctor Who, which returns to BBC America for a new season this Saturday, is smart and sassy. Unlike most British series that make it to U.S. screens, its diverse cast includes working-class and Northern characters who aren’t servants or scumbags. It’s also the product of Britain’s best TV minds: The original showrunner Russell T Davies (Queer as Folk, Bob and Rose) and his successor Steven Moffat (Press Gang, Coupling, Sherlock) are responsible for some of the most provocative shows of the last 20 years.

The new Doctor Who honors its predecessors in its ordinary effects (there’s nothing special about them), its ridiculous battles with alien life forms—in “Vincent and the Doctor,” the Doctor squares off against the krafayis, a particularly pathetic chickenlike monster that (perhaps for budgetary reasons) remains invisible for most of the episode — and the Doctor’s antic affect, silly and overenthusiastic like a Labrador puppy. Since I was a child, these features of Doctor Who have prevented me from truly enjoying the show, and they still annoy me. And yet the modern reboot consistently makes me cry.

Why? I suspect it’s my age. Doctor Who’s most enduring obsession is with time and the ways its passage makes us all mad, sad, and lonely—in other words, the anxieties that plague us in midlife. The Doctor teaches us how to grow old.

Like middle age, the show is studded with sudden losses. In the brilliant (even to a skeptic like me) Season 3 episode “Blink,” two characters are abruptly thrown decades into the past, separated from their 2007 friends and family, and left to rebuild their lives all alone. Fortunately, the time-travelers find ingenious ways to communicate with the loved ones they left behind in the future. It’s as though the show is warning viewers not to take people for granted, urging them to appreciate the here and now.

A visit from the Doctor is like a blast of enchantment, but moments spent with him can make the rest of a lifetime feel dull by comparison. In Season 5’s “The Eleventh Hour” he drops in on a 7-year-old, who then spends the next 12 years obsessing about the strange, wonderful visitor who abruptly disappeared. Pining for the Doctor might remind viewers of a certain age of those occasional wishes to turn back the clock and return to healthier, happier times.

The Doctor knows all about being alone. He’s the sole remaining Time Lord, the last of his race, and as Madame de Pompadour discovers when she accesses his memories in Season 2’s “The Girl in the Fireplace,” he was a “lonely little boy. Lonely then and lonelier now.” The Doctor, who can regenerate into a new body when necessary, shows us that loneliness is the price of immortality. It’s a very 21st-century ambivalence: Everyone wants to live forever, but no one wants to outlive their loved ones.

Nor do they want family members to forget their time together. As the New Yorker’s Emily Nussbaum noted in a recent article, in the last two seasons, the Doctor has found his soul mate, River Song (Alex Kingston). Although they run into each other at hot spots across the universe, their timing is awful, because they’re heading in opposite directions. “Every time we meet I know him more, he knows me less,” she says. “I live for the days when I see him. But I know that every time I do, he'll be one step further away.” It’s a sad fate not unlike the perspective of a woman losing a spouse to Alzheimer’s. Her next line makes the tragedy more explicit: “The day's coming when I'll look into that man's eyes—my Doctor—and he won't have the faintest idea who I am. And I think it's going to kill me.” Still, she won’t let the Doctor see her diary, because she wants to protect him from “spoilers.” Even if love is doomed, we should enjoy it.

The Doctor also comforts us as our own memories fade. Sometimes, to maintain the structural integrity of the universe, he must wipe his companions’ memories clean. When Donna Noble—played with chippy gusto by Catherine Tate—realizes that after many wonderful adventures together, he’s going to send her back to her unglamorous life as “a temp from Chiswick,” she begs for a reprieve. But like a real doctor, he must sometimes be the bearer of bad news. “I am so sorry,” he tells her, “But we had the best of times.” It’s a comfort.

In this fictional universe at least, for everything that’s taken away, something is given. Doctor Who’s world is one of endless possibilities—love, or a new life, is always around the corner. Only the immortal Doctor can regenerate, but anyone can reinvent themselves—shop girls and strippers can become companions to a universe-hopping Time Lord, and a woman ripped out of 2007 can build a new family in 1920. In the end, though, there’s only one possible conclusion to every storyline. As the Doctor says in Season 1, “Everything has its time, and everything dies.” Doctor Who prepares us to say goodbye.

Janet Fielding Battles Cancer

http://www.doctorwhonews.net/2012/09/janet-fielding-battles-cancer.html

Former companion actress Janet Fielding is fighting cancer, it has been revealed.

No more details about her condition are known at the moment but Peter Davison, whose Doctor she appeared opposite as Tegan Jovanka, has won the support of other ex-Doctor actors to launch a charity fund-raising convention - Project Motor Mouth - that aims to "not only raise money for a good cause but also keep Janet's spirits up."

He, along with Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, and David Tennant, are the first guests announced for the event, which will take place on Saturday 19th January 2013 at the Copthorne Hotel Slough-Windsor. All guests will be appearing subject to work commitments.

The profits from the convention will go to Project Motor House, which is seeking to convert a derelict building in Thanet into a mixed-use venue promoting sustainable technology and a place where youngsters can get help with starting their own businesses. Fielding is the project co-ordinator for the organisation as well as its community champion.

She first appeared in Doctor Who in 1981 in Tom Baker's final story, Logopolis, and left the TV series in the 1984 story Resurrection of the Daleks, but made a cameo reappearance two stories later in a regeneration dream sequence for Davison's swansong The Caves of Androzani.

She has also worked as a theatrical agent - a job that saw her representing McGann when he won the role of the Eighth Doctor - and has played the role of Tegan in a number of audio productions for Big Finish.

Fuck you cancer, fuck you.

No arguments Mara
I just love Doctor Who.
I was gutted when David Tennant left, but I really do like what Matt Smith has done with the role.
As for the assistants, Rose Tyler was great, and Billy Piper is a far better actress than she gets credit for.

Matt Smith was burdened with actually making a 'new' Doctor Tennant had to follow Chris Eckelson (sp) who really didn't have time to make a Doctor for Tennant to be different from.  (Martha Jones, and Amy Pond are both very sexy girls, but not Rose).

'Doctor Who': Jenna-Louise Coleman talks about becoming the Doctor's new companion

http://insidetv.ew.com/2012/11/28/doctor-who-jenna-louise-coleman/

Even by the standards of a show whose central character travels through time and space in a craft disguised as a ‘50s era British police phone box, 2012 has been an interesting year for Doctor Who, the BBC sci-fi series that stars Matt Smith.

Back in March, executive producer Steven Moffat announced that the Doctor’s new assistant (or “companion”) would be played by Jenna-Louise Coleman and that the British actress was set to make her debut in this year’s special Christmas episode, which BBC America is screening on Dec. 25 at 9 p.m. So Who fans were taken by surprise when, this September, Coleman appeared in “Asylum of the Daleks,” the first episode of the current season of Doctor Who, which also starred the Time Lord’s now (dearly) departed companions Amy (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill).

More bewildering still, Coleman didn’t seem to be playing the role of the Doctor’s new companion — whose name we now know to be Clara — but rather a character named Oswin Oswald who had been converted into one of the dreaded Daleks and who seemingly died at the end of the show.

In the new issue of ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY, Coleman talks, exclusively, about keeping her role in “Asylum of the Daleks” a secret and when fans might get some answers with regards to the Oswin/Clara conundrum. Below, the actress, whose previous credits include the Julian Fellowes-penned Titanic miniseries, ruminates further on these subjects — as well as discussing the forthcoming Doctor Who Christmas show and revealing where Karen Gillan recommends you should eat next time you’re in, uh, Cardiff.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: You surprised pretty much everyone with your appearance in “Asylum of the Daleks.” Who did you tell about that ahead of time? Were you allowed to tell your family?
JENNA-LOUISE COLEMAN: Yeah, my family knew. But I was convinced it wasn’t going to be kept [a secret]. I thought maybe at least we could keep the ending a secret, with the Dalek. It’s just great. There’s not much TV these days where you really get that element of surprise. There are so many spoilers all the time. I was really shocked that it didn’t leak and so was Steven. We were all really pleased and proud about that.

The role of the Doctor’s companion is so important to the show and such a plum part for an actress. What was the audition process like?
Well, I had my first audition with Andy Pryor, the casting director. Then they brought me back to read with Matt before Christmas and then I had another session with Matt after Christmas. So it was three all together — but it was lovely, actually. [Eventually] I think there were six people there — producers, casting directors, and everybody — and they actually left the room and left me and Matt to it. I’ve never had that in an audition before. They let us play about and made the scene our own and then they all came in to watch.

How did you find out the role was yours?
My agent phoned me up about two days later saying I’d got the part. I was in [British department store] Marks & Spencer. I couldn’t carry on shopping. I had an avocado that I had to put down and just went for a walk.

I’m still kind of digesting everything. The Doctor Who Experience (a permanent, Who-themed exhibition) has just opened in Cardiff and I look out my window and see it and it’s so huge. I came out to L.A. not long after I got the part and so many people out there were talking about it. It’s still becoming real to me in a way.

I believe Matt Smith had never seen an episode of Doctor Who when he auditioned. Were you a fan? It wasn’t actually on TV when you were growing up.
Well, we missed it! We missed it! And then when it came back in 2005 I was, like, 18. I was aware of it but I kind of missed it. I didn’t really know anything going into the audition room, which was kind of nice. I didn’t know what Matt was going to throw at me because I wasn’t used to it. Obviously I was aware of him but it was kind of new too me.

And then I didn’t watch too much of Karen and Matt’s stuff on purpose because it’s such a rhythmic thing, the dynamic, that I don’t want to pick up on anything. I kind of want to research it and watch every single episode, but my character, I’m just a girl who’s going into this not knowing anything and has to experience it front on. So that’s what I need to do as well, I think. And that’s what Steven’s very keen for me to do.

My grandma is a huge fan. My auntie was over from Australia when I got the part and she used to hide behind the sofa from the Daleks. My family — it was kind of like every single generation [except me]. It was quite strange, though — as soon as I started auditioning, when you actually look, Doctor Who really is everywhere. I turned up at the BBC for my audition and I was eating my lunch and I looked up and there’s a life-size cutout of Matt just staring at me.

I was recently talking to someone on a plane and, after I mentioned that I was writing about Doctor Who, they not not only declared themselves to be a fan but then explained at some length why Christopher Eccleston was the best ever Doctor.
Yeah. It’s the magic of it, isn’t it? It’s generational and universal. My friend’s little brother, who’s only like 7, is a massive fan. He’s got his own little TARDIS in his room. I see little kids dressed up as [the Doctor] and then my grandma is the most excited person in the world as well. I don’t think there’s many shows that have it, that cross so many generations.

Amy and Rory were so beloved. Has it been daunting to fill their shoes?
It’s strange, actually. I watched the five episodes that went out recently as we were filming. It was strange to watch their goodbye as I was doing the beginning — and interesting to see where it left the Doctor as well. There’s no way to consider it other than something totally different. You fill somebody else’s shoes by trying to do the same thing — and I don’t think that’s a healthy way to look at it. It’s a whole new story, it’s a whole new character. It changes the Doctor and you’ve got to go on that journey and also go on your own journey with it, as well.

Is it true Karen Gillan left you a note?
She sent me a message. She texted me. I was pacing around, trying to figure out a scene and I checked my phone and I just had a message from her saying kind of “Good luck” and “You’re going to knock it out the park.” Then she told me eat at Woods restaurant in Cardiff. That was her Cardiff tip.

Matt Smith has been on the show for a few years now. What’s it been like working with him?
He is awe-inspiring. His work ethic just knows no bounds, really. It’s a work in progress and every day is something new and he’s incredibly creative and I feel like I’m learning more and more from him.

But in “Asylum of the Daleks” you were pretty much on your own in a room. What was it like acting with nobody?
That was really interesting. That was one of my huge concerns. The idea is you’ve really got to feel the banter and the dynamic between Oswin and the Doctor and I was really concerned about how that was going to work without Matt being there.

Basically I had a screen with a green circle in the middle which I spoke at for two days. So that kind of did help with [not] losing your mind. But Matt came down on my first day and we ran some stuff together so I could kind of get the feel of where he’d pitched it so it could really sync together. I’d seen some of his rushes as well. We did what we could to really sync us together.

“Asylum” was so funny but also so very sad.
That’s what Steven is so beautiful at. That’s the thing — it is so light and you can play so much with the comedy and he never over-sentimentalizes anything. But, reading that script, I found it so heartbreaking, the end.

It’s interesting actually — I think I can tell you this — that that was never the initial plan either, to have me be Oswin. That was part of a genius plan that Steven came up with half way through the audition process. That was already written but not written for what was to be the new companion. I was auditioning for the companion and then I got all these sides and I was like, “Who’s Oswin? They clearly don’t know what they want, they obviously don’t know what they’re looking for. They just want people to show them different things and see.” This is what I assumed when I was auditioning, not realizing that it’s basically Steven’s mad genius again.

So, you played an ultimately deceased Dalek on that show and now you are about to debut (again!) on the special Christmas show as the Doctor’s assistant. All of which obviously raises about a thousand questions. Is this a subject that is going to be addressed in the Christmas episode?
Uh… mmm… no. We’re going to have what has been referred to as a “soft mystery.” For me, filming, I’ve been totally oblivious to Oswin and the “Asylum of the Daleks.” I really have had to erase it from my memory. Yeah, Christmas is it’s own episode.

Oswin was a Dalek. Can you tell us whether your companion is human? Not all of the Doctor’s companions have been.
That’s why it’s so difficult [to talk about it]. Because of the way it started with Oswin, it’s really difficult to say much: where she’s from, what period she’s from, what planet she’s from, even.

It’s not often an actor can’t even reveal what planet their character is from.
Exactly, yeah. I know. Doctor Who’s the worst for it, isn’t it?

What can you say about the Christmas show?
I feel like I’ve been in Christmas for about six months. [Laughs]. We’re still finishing up on ADR and things at the moment. There are some absolutely stunning, beautiful, very magical, magical, magical, moments in it that’s Steven written. And it’s very icy and snowy.

Do you at any point say, “It’s bigger on the inside!”
You’ll have to wait and see.

Spearhead From Space Remastered In High Definition

http://www.doctorwhonews.net/2012/12/spearhead-remastered-high-definition-041212072917.html

The debut story of Jon Pertwee has been given the high-definition treatment for Doctor Who's 50th anniversary.

Spearhead From Space - Doctor Who's first colour story - is the only adventure from the classic era that can be remastered into true HD say experts because, thanks to industrial action at BBC TV Centre, all four episodes were shot on location on 16mm film rather than being recorded on videotape - the only time this was ever done on the show.

The digital media services team of BBC Studios and Post Production was commissioned by BBC Worldwide to remaster the story, which was first broadcast in January 1970 and also introduced Caroline John as assistant Liz Shaw. The "facelift" has given the story a cinematic finish, and the Blu-ray is now scheduled for release on Monday 15th July 2013.

The original 16mm negatives were scanned and digitised using state-of-the-art equipment, and other work has included repairing damage done to one episode's negative caused by a reaction with chemicals during a printing process some years ago. Dirt has also been removed, grain lessened, joins cleaned up, and picture movement stabilised. The soundtrack, which had previously been remastered, was then added to the final master version.

Jonathan Wood, the team's lead colourist, said:
The look of this HD remaster is a low-key filmic approach, which gives it more of a dramatic result. Working with the original negative and using a powerful, non-linear grading system, we decided to treat this four-part story like an individual filmed drama rather than thinking of it as part of an ongoing series normally shot in a TV studio.

Clive Hodge, the digital media services head, said:
We're delighted to have teamed up with BBC Worldwide to have remastered such an iconic programme for its 50th anniversary. Doctor Who is one of the few series to remain popular through the ages, and it's fantastic that the younger generations will have the chance to see this landmark story in the same picture quality that they've become used to with the more recent series.

BBC America heads back in the TARDIS to bring classic Doctor Who to America

http://io9.com/5977946/bbc-america-heads-back-in-the-tardis-to-bring-classic-doctor-who-to-america

It's been a long, long time since pre-Russell Davies Doctor Who was shown in America, but that's set to change this Sunday, at 9 p.m. EST. BBC America will air the four-part serial "The Aztecs," starring William Hartnell as the First Doctor, in its entirety. It's part of a series titled "The Doctors Revisited," which will help celebrate Doctor Who's 50th anniversary in America by airing a Who serial each month, one per Doctor, in numerical order. Given how well the new-Who series do on BBC America, these classic episodes could be quite the hit... or at least help bring some newer fans into the vast if lower-production-valued world of classic Doctor Who. Thanks to everyone who sent in the tip.

Doctor Who at 50: BFI announces The Robots of Death for April

http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2013-02-13/doctor-who-at-50-bfi-announces-the-robots-of-death-for-april

The first two events at the BFI Southbank, London, were a massive success: An Unearthly Child in January and The Tomb of the Cybermen last weekend. Tickets for the Jon Pertwee story The Mind of Evil (10 March) sold out in minutes. But – many were asking – which serial would be selected to represent Tom Baker from his diverse seven-year tenure?

“Genesis, Talons, Zygons or Pyramids? How to choose just one story from the era of the fourth Doctor has to be the cruellest choice of all,” says BFI programmer Justin Johnson, contacting us between screenings at the “chilly” Berlin Film Festival. “In the end, we went for this fine story with Tom Baker at his sparkling best and four episodes of sheer joy... I just wish we had a venue with 20,000 seats!!”

First shown in 1977, The Robots of Death has long been a fan favourite. A suspenseful, beautifully designed four-parter, it features Tom Baker in his prime, with the always brilliant Louise Jameson as Leela, the Doctor’s leather-clad “noble savage” companion. The adventure unfolds aboard a gigantic mobile Sandminer, run by a small band of humans whose robot servants suddenly become homicidal…

Guests for the event and the exact date in April are still to be finalised.

Doctor Who: The Doctors Revisited - The Third Doctor

http://press.bbcamerica.com/program.jsp?id=102366

BBC AMERICA celebrates the third Doctor, Jon Pertwee, in a new special of Doctor Who: The Doctors Revisited, followed by the classic storyline Spearhead from Space. Lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat, executive producer Caroline Skinner, Tenth Doctor David Tennant, Season Six guest star Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey), among others, discuss how the third Doctor brought action and stunts to the series. In the story Spearhead from Space, a swarm of meteorites fall on the sleepy English countryside, bringing with them a terrible new threat to mankind: the Nestene consciousness - a disembodied alien intelligence with an affinity for plastic. The Doctor is forced to race against time, in order to stop humanity from being replaced by a generation of terrifying plastic replicas. Doctor Who: The Doctors Revisited – The Third Doctor premieres Sunday, March 31, 8:00pm ET/PT.

Amazon Prime video has ever NuWho series except Jodie Whittaker's included with your subscription.  Including the specials.

If you subscribe to Britbox with Amazon prime you get every released classic story -minus a few Dalek stories, Terry Nation's estate is very greedy.  A few of the lost episodes from Patrick Troughton's run are in animation form, but still worth it.

If you can buy the DVDs however, I highly endorse them.  My collection is my baby.  The commentaries on them are really cool.  You learn a lot about what went on during the production of many of the serials -like when Elsabeth Sladen almost drown during the filming of Revenge of the Cybermen or when Tom Baker and Lis stopped at a random house on a whim just to watch themselves.

Pass the Weekend with the BBC's Backlog of Doctor Who Screenplays (https://io9.gizmodo.com/pass-the-weekend-with-the-bbcs-backlog-of-doctor-who-sc-1831704299)

Or maybe I'll read the Sherlock scripts and dream about my Benedict Cumberbatch man-crush.

When you're done with that, maybe you can check out the The Original Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy! (http://books.google.com/books?id=6LgGIvmSce0C&printsec=frontcover&dq=hitchhikers+radio+scripts&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiqk9uBy-vfAhVJVK0KHR1cDo0Q6AEINTAC#v=onepage&q=hitchhikers%20radio%20scripts&f=false)

On a side note, Douglas Adams got his start as a writer for Doctor Who.  Seriously, ^that is worth the read, just for the description of impossible sound effects!

"Blink" is my favorite episode of old-Who, and new-Who.  The Doctor (And one of my favorite compantions) is barely in it, but the tone, and existential horror is so incredibly different.

I'm just saying Moffatt gets too much grief.

ROFL!  Old School Master moment!  I kinda like what they did with the Doctor New Masters (Including "Missy") but back in the day, he was just such a scenery chewing, mustache twirling maniacal laughing campy villain!  That clip captures it perfectly.  (Basically Ming the Merciless with a British accent.)

I'm not going to rank them, I don't have a favorite Doctor, (Okay, #9) either, but Delgado Established the character, and kinda set the bar.  Maybe a little too high, but I'm glad that rather than trying to top that, they went another way.  As they usually did with the Doctors.
