Yes it was.  Leveled an entire town of about 70 houses.

Yeah.  I had read that.  I had seen static pictures.
But staring at the actual footage is mind blowing!

I also can't get my head around those who actively pursue storms like this.  On Purpose!

You have to be slightly crazy to chase Tornado's.
Not exactly what I would want to do for a living.
Life is dangerous enough, why chase something that has the power to kill you in seconds? Let along wipe out a town that fast as well.

Love,
Liz

Uhm, that is my dream job. I have way too much meteorology knowledge and even considered switching degrees.

Now, it's more of a hobby. I AM the crazy one of the porch waiting for storms to roll in. I think being raised and living in Kansas just does that to a person.

I can understand..... somewhat.  I love meteorology (and even took some grad level classes in it) and I am drawn to watching weather and watching videos about extreme weather and I love watching a good ol' rip-roaring thunderstorm (from within my home)—even saw the lightning hit the scaffolding on the neighbors house once!  But actively moving toward a tornado.   :emot_weird:  Um, not for me.

I second Kittykass.. I always tried to get into the middle of tstorms to get good Lightning pics and also used to be an active ham operator out during weather nets. Some good times but as I lately have a leased vehicle..I haven't been really driving thru them as much. Plus I almost swear that here in SE MI (Detroit suburbs) we've had a lot of storm weakness in the area...like heat island or something other effect pushing the "good" energetic storms more south of D.. Or up in the thumb area..just a lot of "gapped" fronts when I've watched for them.

If I had the money... I'd be in a big equipped vehicle out in the plains...

Otherwise, when at work I just watch the chasing streams thru http://tvnweather.com/ (http://tvnweather.com/) for some live footage. 2 crews were on that wedge tornado for quite awhile till it got dark.

When the E-4 tornado was spotted, local law enforcement advised all storm chasers to leave the area immediately.

Apparently, we in the UK have more tornadoes per square mile than the US, they're just much smaller (the occasional wrecked roof or chimney).

Years ago, my mother and a friend were holidaying in the US, and saw a strange cloud down the highway.  They drove after it in curiosity, not realising that it was a tornado until it spun the car around!

It must in in the family, because when I first moved to this part of the UK, a thunderstorm struck the town we were staying in.  I climbed to the top floor of a multistory car park to watch the lightning as it struck the sea.  It took me a while to realise that I was looking down on the strikes, standing in the pouring rain on the roof of the tallest building in the area...

Years before that, when we were courting, MrsBoast and I had a memorable sex session in a car parked in the countryside as a thunderstorm walked on legs of lightning down the valley, striking near-by on both sides of the car as it past.

I think I'll just hide in the storm cellar and watch it in HD.  Popcorn, anyone?

Oh, wait...  I'm in DALLAS.  They don't HAVE any storm cellars here.  :o  Fuck!

Life's a bitch, then you die.

Now do you know what a hardened room is for?

....  But unplug  everything to be safe Rope!

Sorry, this triggered my inner Beavis..   *ehheh, heheh, he said But Plug... *

 ;D

And Idle...that kinda sounds hot (car sex).... Adds a whole other level of excitement adding adrenaline to it all...just as long as the car rockin' is due to internal influences instead of external (approaching tornado :))

Rope had a bad experience with a lightning bolt in January.

Buttplug
Buttplug
Buttplug...

:D

Well I know of a few good lightning stories.. But then again I also was a ham operator.  (still am...really..just haven't turned on a radio in a few years). Lots of dread in thinking of really active storms and all the antennas that feed into the house...

One friend's place was zapped then feeding into the power lines that dropped down.. Between the strike and landed lines, which ended up on his car parked outside... It kinda melted things a bit. Including several radio gear, tires, plastics...house siding...

Tornado chasing tours available RIGHT NOW just south of Dallas...

If you don't know, that 'hook echo' in about the center of the screen is a Bad Thing.

edit: if nobody else was watching, that storm cell SAT on top of the Cleburn area for over 2 hours, happily rotating it's ass off.  I don't think anyone knows for sure how many tornadoes spawned during the life of that single storm cell.  I saw several signatures of a tornado during those two hours, while other storm cells slammed into that stationary one and merged.  The rest of the cells were moving East, but that one set up housekeeping.

There's some decent pix of the aftermath here:
http://www.wfaa.com/story/weather/2015/04/26/severe-storms-are-in-sundays-forecast/26412205/

It could have been a LOT worse, the way it was looking on the RADAR.

Been watching the chasers around those mile-wide wedge tornadoes the last couple of days.
Remotely tho...
http://tvnweather.com (http://tvnweather.com)
Once there, go to the "live chasers" (or something like that...it doesn't show on mobile/Apple devices..I watch on PC from work) link at top and see all the chasers on a radar map.
You can pull up all sorts of video feeds then.

Anyone that watches severe weather knows what that ugly greenish tint means.  :o

We're back under Tornado Watch again.  Notice that nice little spinning cell centered between Dallas and Fort Worth?  Yeah, that'd be the one.

I live just a bit south of OKC in what they/we call "Tornado Alley", an apt description. The last four storms have all damaged my house, and the last one bought me a new roof. I got over my fear of the storms years ago, and usually stand out on the porch and watch the excitement, although a flying wheelbarrow did almost nail my ass last time.

As far as I'm concerned Oklahoma should be 70k square miles of uninhabited wilderness. Why we still live here is beyond me. It's freezing cold in winter and burning hot in summer, and every spring the goddam twisters blow us away. Crazy. As soon as my parents are gone, I'm outta here, like panties on prom night. Stupid State.

Hilarious description, 'bot!
And I find it funny that some of my friends have family in Oklahoma who will NEVER, EVER visit California because there might be an earthquake, eventually, sometime, maybe.  Yet they put up with the Spring Twisters every year!  Go figure!

I'm sure they're both turning in their graves: MY parents got the fuck OUT of Oklahoma City for pretty much the same reasons you described.  If there's life after death, I'm sure they're both shaking their heads wondering what the hell went dead wrong with their eldest son.  Boy don't have the sense to git in out of the rain...  We were under watch earlier today, but the warnings were all N and S of Dallas.  Yeah, gotta love SPRINGTIME!

Simple Question:
"If your house has been wiped out by not one tornado, but several (over time).
why do you still live there"?....Interestingly enough why would an insurance company keep insuring you (over and over and over again)....at some point the light bulb over your head should come on. Unless of course you "like" living without a roof and or a neighborhood.

Love,
Liz

Good question... I can't answer it... Like I said, though, when my parents are gone, I'm outta here...

Actually, in the 26 years I've lived here, I've only ever filed one insurance claim... most of the time I just fix it and go on... only once has it been really bad enough to file. Plus, I needed a new roof anyway, it actually helped me out.

I have no love for this god-forsaken state, in any case.
