Title: CJ's nostalgia and nonsense topic.
Post by: ChirpingGirl on May 17, 2020, 05:05:13 AM
Yeah, CJ sucks at topic naming. Anyway, let's bring some life to this dead place. Here is where we can discuss some stupid nostalgic and nonsensical shit, or CJ can just post here and be ignored.  ;D

In 1989, an "unsold pilot" was made based on the movie Adventures In Babysitting which came out 2 years earlier in 1987. Why? Who in the fuck knows.   What in the fuck would the long term plot have been? This dopey bitch, who probably never acted again anyway, babysits the same kids in every episode as some shenanigans go on?

The acting is about what you would expect from an 80s show. The theme song is by far the highlight of this abomination. One episode was ever made.

Apparently Batman 1989 was kind of a big deal.

$24.98 or $17.99 for a VHS tape back then? I don't even know if that was a good deal or not.

The hype for this movie was way out of proportion. It wasn't even very good and the sequels were pretty much garbage. But damn if the people in those interviews didn't look 80s as fuck.  :emot_laughing:

CJ always digs these old hyped up movie fast food collectors cup commercials for some reason. Kinda always want them, despite them all being absolutely worthless.  :D

Elizabeth Shue played the babysitter. She had played in the Karate Kid before Adventures in Babysitting came out and she played opposite Tom Cruise in Cocktail the following year. Later, she starred with Nicholas Cage in Leaving Las Vegas.

Clerks the 1995 unaired TV show pilot.

I sincerely hope Kevin Smith had nothing to do with this.

First, no quick stop. Second, too many characters. Third, I guess it wasn't as bad as the adventures in babysitting pilot.

Daddy, is mommy in the ground?

Steel Magnolias, yeah that 1989 movie, also had a failed TV show pilot in 1990. I don't remember even seeing the movie, and if I ever did I probably fell asleep  ;D. Given the fact there was only one episode I guess there wasn't much demand to watch a bunch of old southern women sitting in a salon bitching and moaning about their lives.  :emot_laughing:

CJ likes "fan films". Sometimes they're horrendously bad, sometimes they're pretty good.

I'm not sure about this one. But it is better than any of the recent movies. Even makes more sense.

Wild wild west was a TV show then a shitty Will Smith movie. Smith later apologized to Robert Conrad for making the movie.

Were all 90s movie music videos done by Will Smith?

The Flintstones
Charlie’s Angels
The Beverly Hillbillies
The Addams Family
The Munsters
The Man from UNCLE
Inspector Gadget
The Dukes of Hazard
Dudley Do-Right
The Edge of Darkness
McHale’s Navy
The Brady Bunch
I Spy
The A-Team
The Fugitive
CHiP’s
George of the Jungle
The Jetsons
Scooby Doo
Yogi Bear
Sponge Bob
Maverick
Get Smart
The Mod Squad
The Avengers
Lost in Space
Dark Shadows

South Park
21 Jump Street
Mission Impossible
Wild Wild West

And of course:

Batman
Superman
Star Trek

While this is swerving somewhat off topic, I'd suspect I'm far from alone in considering some of the movies on your list as "bad."

I've only seen the first two Tom Cruise "Mission Impossible" movies, but I found them both to be absolutely thrilling. And the same goes, perhaps even more so, for the Harrison Ford remake of "The Fugitive."

In context, the first Spongebob movie is almost perfect. The two "Addams Family" movies, with Raul Julia, Angelica Huston, Christopher Lloyd, and a young Christina Ricci, are terrific dark comedies. And the "George of the Jungle" remake with Brendan Frasier is laugh out loud funny from start to finish.

Imho...

I am not suggesting that all remake movies have no merit; however, America has grown addicted to recycled bubblegum tripe. There are a few original films to watch at the Multiplex. And just check your cable listings on any given night. I think it reflects the overall lack of cultural sophistication that our country increasingly exhibits. Face it, when we start electing reality television personalities to the highest office, we’ve gone down the shitter.

I don't like Velma, I love Velma. And I lust after her indescribable ways.

But I watched both of the live-action movies that came out in the early 2000s with my nephews, and they're aggressively terrible.

George of the Jungle was one of my favourite movies when I was a kid and it's closer to a parody than a remake. I agree with the rest of what you said, perhaps with the exception of Mission Impossible 2, and I would add a few more comments.

The Batman "remakes" have little resemblance either to one another or the Adam West series (which was itself of course a comic book adaptation). Both Burton and Nolan's take on the character were unique and interesting movies, especially in the context of the superhero movie genre. As far as I know, Spongebob has never been remade, but I don't know much about it. South Park certainly hasn't and the one movie that exists was made by the creators of the show, in continuity with the show and did not disrupt release of the show. Hard to see what the problem is there.

One of the few times the porn parody of a movie/television series may be better.  8)

Hmmm...indescribable ways?  ;D

You're right.

While there have been two feature-length Spongebob movies released in theaters, they weren't remakes, they were movie versions of the TV show, made by the same people, and featuring the same voice actors. Well, the same voice actors, plus David Hasselhoff, who does a hilarious self-parody.

Okay, you just made me feel old.

The Brendan Frasier "George of the Jungle" remake came out when I was 18.

And it's really a parody of a parody, since the "George of the Jungle" cartoon series from the 1960s was itself a parody of the Tarzan movies.

I was 7 when it was released, but I saw it first on video maybe a year later. Going to the cinema was reserved for birthdays when I was that age so movies might as well have not existed until I saw them on video. I also never realised there was originally a cartoon series. I've at least heard of all the others from the list.

For those of us who were kids in the 1960’s...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EaXWy-HQefc

George, George
George of the Jungle,
Strong as he can be.
(Ahhhhhhhh)
Watch out for that tree!

George, George,
George of the Jungle,
Lives a life that's free.
(Ahhhhhhhh)
Watch out for that tree!

When he gets in a scrape,
he makes his escape
with the help of his friend,
an ape named Ape.
Then away he'll schlep
on his elephant Shep
While Fella and Ursula*
Stay in step...with

George, George
George of the Jungle,
Friend to you and me.
(Ahhhhhhhh)
Watch out for that tree!

Watch out for that--
(Ahhhhhhhh)
Treeeee....

George, George
George of the Jungle
Friend to you and me!

[*In the opening of the song, it indeed says "Fella"
(its sometimes erroneously credited as "Velma" or "Thelma")
June Foray, the voice of Ursula, explained:
"It was a joke. The song said Fella and Ursula because George would sometimes call Ursula 'Fella'"
-As answered in "The Magic Behind the Voices: A Who's Who of Cartoon Voice Actors"]

The cartoon show was an American thing, and it likely never made its way over there.

And, for the record, I only saw it in syndication, since it originally aired long before I was born (see, now I'm feeling younger again!).

Watching the A-Team on IMDB Freedive.

Fuck was that show pointless. I've said it before, I'll say it again. Every episode seems to be exactly the same. Bad guys want something, rough up innocent people and then they hire the A-Team. A-Team roughs bad guys up, then bad guys kidnap someone. A-Team build armored vehicle out of whatever shit is laying around and rescue the people and then sometimes they don't even charge them money for the job. And occasionally the military chase after them and they always get away.  :emot_shrug:

I just don't get how it made it to 5 seasons.

All 5 seasons free, so watch it.

I used to see MrT jogging around Streeterville in Chicago. He was always wearing gold chains.

Also, I sat in the actual A Team van.  The show was a hit with the children, not so much with the adults. As was CHIPS.

Nonsense:

Scam email.

You may not know me, and you are probably wondering why you are getting this email, right? I'm a Hacker who cracked your devices. I setup a malware on the adult video (P0RN) website and guess what, you visited this site to have fun (you know what I mean). While you were watching videos, your internet browser started out functioning as a "HRDP" – Hidden Remote Desktop Protocol having a keylogger which gave me accessibility to your screen and webcam. After that, my software program obtained all your contacts and files. You entered a password on the websites you visited, and I intercepted it. Of course, you can change it, or already changed it. But it doesn't matter, my malware updated it every time.

What did I do?
I generated a backup of your every system (private document files, video, photos, all files).
I created a double-screen video. 1st part shows the video you were watching (you've got a good taste ha ha . . .), and 2nd part shows the recording of your webcam.
Do not try to find and destroy my virus! (All your data is already uploaded to a remote server)

Do not try to contact me. Various security services will not help you; formatting a disk or destroying a device will not help either, since your data is already on a remote server.
I guarantee you that I will not disturb you again after payment, as you are not my single victim. This is a hacker code of honor. Don't be mad at me, everyone has their own work.

exactly what should you do?
Well, in my opinion, $ 1000 (USD) Dollars is a fair price for our little secret. You'll make the payment by Bitcoin (search "Bitcoin Wallet" in Application Store then Download & Install) Make a deposit to your wallet. After that, transfer it to my wallet.
My Bitcoin (BTC) wallet address:

(It is case sensitive, Bitcoin wallet address Beginning with 1 and Ending with A)

Important:
You have 3 Business days in order to make the payment. (I've a Facebook pixel in this mail, and at this moment I know that you have read through this email message). To track the reading of a message and the actions in it, I use the Facebook pixel. Thanks to them. (Everything that is used for the authorities can help us.) If I do not get the Bitcoin, I will certainly send out your video recording to all your contacts including relatives, coworkers , Youtube and all contacts. Having said that, if I receive the payment, I'll destroy the video immediately. If you need evidence, reply with "Yes" and I will certainly send out your video recording to your 20 contacts. It is a non-negotiable offer, don't waste my personal time and yours by responding to this message.

 :emot_laughing:

Like I always say, go ahead and do it. My grandma would love to see it. So would my brother. Pretty sure his mom would too. And all my friends would love to see.  ;D

I could live with the humiliation of everyone getting to see CJ diddling it. I'll keep the thousand bucks. Shit, I know people who'd pay to see me do that.  :emot_laughing:

Nonsense:

Bill And Ted 3 is pretty much skipping theaters and hitting VOD in September. While all the other would be Summer blockbusters are being canned for another year or so, Bill And Ted just might prove what the industry refuses to accept: It's over for theaters. In our living room alone we have a fucking gigantic HDTV. In my room we have another one. Every room in this house has an HDTV with streaming capability. Remind me again why we even need movie theaters? The simple answer is we don't.

Theater employees have probably all started to move on and owners are most certainly seeing the writing on the wall if they refused to see it before. Like video stores, it's over. They just refuse to let it go. I hope Bill And Ted makes a fortune on VOD. CJ will be buying it.  ;D

I can think of three reasons:

1) Many Americans are not wealthy enough to be able to subscribe to multiple streaming services.

2) Many Americans can't afford to pay for high-speed internet services

3) Many Americans don't have the family income to buy "a fucking gigantic HDTV. In my room we have another one. Every room in this house has an HDTV with streaming capability."

I understand where you're coming from but a trip to a cinema is arguably less affordable than streaming. If you can't afford a month's worth of Netflix and access a device to stream it on then a trip to the cinema would be a luxury well outside your limited means. The response of cinemas to dwindling demand has been to hike up prices, which I'm personally fine with since I'm happy to support cinemas for now. It does mean that the cinema experience is now less an accessible means of viewing movies and more a means of viewing movies as their creators intended them to be seen, at a premium.

That is the argument for cinemas now, I think. Regardless of the size of TVs, there is no way to accurately recreate the cinema experience in an ordinary home yet, either in terms of the audiovisual presentation or the communal aspect.

You can buy HDTVS for like under $30 these days. I know because I bought a 19 inch 1080P one for $25 recently and gave it to a friend of mine for their new apartment. And you don't need to buy streaming services. I regret getting Disney+ I currently have no intention to renew it when it expires. And you can get reduced price internet if you're low income. Probably even free.

You can cut the cord and not really miss anything of worth these days, there are plenty of websites with free streaming TV. I practically have Pluto TVs star trek channel on all the time now.  And of course you can watch anything you want without paying for it, we all know that. Even if you have a cheap chromebook or something, you don't need a TV. You can still watch anything you want.

Quote
And Ghostbusters is playing there this weekend with the Karate Kid as a double feature.

I would only consider a trip to a theater for Ghostbusters. But even then I'd be like "I can just watch it here and in HD."  ;D

Theaters are dying. All the big movies are delayed another year. More movies being knocked back to even further releases years down the road. They can't survive like this and that's just the way it is. They've been doomed for years now, they just haven't accepted it. CJ can't do anything about that, I can't work that kind of a miracle. :emot_shrug: During all this the movie industry flatly refused to embrace streaming as celebrities told everyone to stay home or you'll murder someone with a cough.  There was record streaming of online content and people playing video games but they're still hell bent on theatrical releases.

I don't fuckin' know. I'm moving on.

You're probably right. Here in NYC, which likely has the highest ticket prices in the nation, taking a family of five to the movies will cost around $65-70. And that's not including aggressively overpriced snacks.

Still, after a quick check of the Best Buy web site, "a fucking gigantic HDTV" costs anywhere from $800 to $2,500. That's outside the price range of many Americans, and "every room in this house has an HDTV with streaming capability" is beyond the budget of even middle class Americans.

Your main point is correct. I live on a fairly tight budget. and I have an HDTV (I think it's 32") and two streaming subscriptions (plus cable to watch soccer matches), and that easily fits in my budget. There's also some validity to the assertions that Americans are getting out of the habit of "going to the movies," and in some U.S. cities, including my own, movie theaters likely won't re-open until 2021. Some Summer Blockbusters have been "released" via streaming already, or will be shortly, for around $20. That's a lot cheaper than the $65-70 figure I mentioned. And if you have "a fucking gigantic HDTV" and a fucking awesome sound system, it comes pretty close to capturing the cinema experience.

While I know very little about this topic, I can only imagine how much money the studios are losing. The $20 vs. $70 savings is great for families, but it's a $50 net loss for the studios. Per family, per movie. Plus, most productions have been shut down for the last four months, and have only recently recently re-opened in some parts of the country. So the studios will go from having a glut of unreleased content to have a dearth of content.

And I agree that people miss the "movie-going experience." I know I do, especially, as you noted, the communal aspects.

CJ wrote a movie. I know, a barely literate retard wrote something. I get it.  :D

It was set on the last day of 1989 and was about love, life changing and the end of an era. I did try to sell it and the response was I love it, but it would cost more to license the 80s music than make the movie.  :emot_laughing:

So I never did sell it, obviously. But I gave it to a friend of mine who may end up doing something with it.

There was a dance scene set to Electric Blue by Icehouse. Which is why I sing along to that song every time I hear it.  ;D

I am told the reason my favorite television series, “Ed,” never came out on Netflix or in a box set, is because there is so much music set in the soundtrack, that they have been unable to come up with a financially viable plan. So sad, because it’s a great show about a lawyer who moves back to his hometown and buys the bowling alley, where he now practices law. I loved it.

The music I wrote in:

Electric Blue - Icehouse

Should've Known Better - Richard Marx

Set the night to music - Starship

Nothing's gonna stop us now - Starship

I honestly don't think it woulda been that expensive. Oh well. Probably for the best anyway.  :D

Nothing's gonna stop us now - Starship

That I didn't know — that writers can suggest music for specific scenes in a screenplay.

Being an aged person, I don't recognize most of the tracks included in recent movies or TV episodes, and maybe that lessens the impact. I'm left wondering if the track was chosen for the melody or the lyrics.

Most movie music is selected by a music director for movies, business management professionals, also called music supervisors. They oversee the composer and other musicians involved in creating music for a movie, and select music to create the atmosphere of a movie through the soundtrack selection.

There is a Grammy for music supervision, and now an Emmy.  No Oscar yet, but the real prize for this industry is the Guild of Music Supervisors Awards.

Whether it was Sia’s “Breathe Me” on Six Feet Under, or “Zou Bisou Bisou” on Mad Men, or that infamous OC scene with Imogen Heap’s “Hide and Seek,” a well-placed song can amplify the emotional intensity and resonance of a moment, elevating it to fame. And while a flawless pairing of scene and soundtrack can feel perfectly serendipitous, these moments are almost always the result of someone poring through thousands of tracks and spending hours working with the show’s creative team to find exactly the right tune, to say nothing of securing permission to use it. That’s the job of the music supervisor, in a nutshell. (What a great career!  Discovering obscure music cuts all day long for a living.)

If you think it isn’t important, ask one hit wonder Smash Mouth.  The music director for Shrek picked up their song “All Star” in 2001, and it has played more or less continuously on the radio, and apps, for 20 years.

No fuckin' shit! I hear it practically every time I shop at Kroger.

The song featured in 1999's Inspector Gadget and Mystery Men, the latter of which was the basis for the song's music video. It features heavily in the 2001 movie Rat Race, in which the band performs it at a live concert, over the closing credits. It regained popularity after being featured in the 2001 DreamWorks animated movie Shrek, where it was played over the opening credits.

Makes a pretty good commie anthem.  :emot_laughing:

I actually enjoy the song.  I find it up beat and fun.  No kids so I'm not subjected to it on a regular basis like some would be.  :D

When CJ was little, CJ's mommy took CJ shopping one day. While waiting for mommy to load the car with stuff, CJ was doing what all dumb blondes do... chew gum and play with it. But when CJ's mommy said it was time to go, CJ took the gum out of CJ's mouth and put it on a brick support pillar at the store. Over time, the store was turned into another store. CJ worked there a few months ago during the plandemic so CJ wouldn't ruin CJ's savings account.

That piece of CJ's gum turned to rock over the years and is still there. CJ told CJ's manager/friend about the gum, and now CJ's friend/manager wrote in marker near the gum "Cricket's gum" with an arrow pointing at it.

And now that ink will dry and become permanent, and everyone will wonder in a hundred years who the legendary Cricket was whose gum is immortalised on a pillar.

Long ago on the west side of Chicago there was a pizza restaurant named Scosttio's. Open late at night and offering the musical styling of an ancient organ player and lounge singer named Horatio. My friends and I would gather there late for pitchers of beer and industrial grade pizza. Not the best. Not the worst. But hot enough to burn the roof of your mouth every time.

I was not the first to make a remarkable discovery but I can attest to how long this little gem of a , shall we say 1970's version of an Easter Egg, remained ensconced in the "terlet" of Scossttio's. One friend came back laughing uncontrollably and announced to the table that we had to go up to the "terlet" and look under the square piece of plywood that was laying in one corner.

Being young and germ proof we each our turn, went and lifted this plywood square. Each returned cracking up and urged the next to go peek. When I did the deed I found under plywood portal keeper a pair of baby blue boxer shorts. Clean. Not visibly soiled , neatly spread out under the plywood.

A silly mystery at best and enough of an amusement for a group of stoned drinking snickering idiots to keep us coming back. For years. Those baby blue boxer shorts remained there. Never aging. Never being removed by the cleaning staff. Pristine in their repose. A harbinger of mirth with each new friend, date, or acquaintance to whom we revealed this memorial.

It is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma; but perhaps there is a key.

Probably between Narragansett Ave and Austin Ave. Also being a long time ago I can neither confirm nor deny my spelling of the joint's name. But if you were there you would never forget Horatio. As for the boxer shorts, what you do in your own time is your own business.

Being blonde, CJ is already dumb enough. But I'm just good old fashioned dumb to begin with.

The dumbest thing I recently did was pour a bowl of cereal for one of the girls and poured water on it instead of milk. I'm not saying I was distracted and grabbed the wrong jug, I grabbed it and was so stupid I didn't notice it was water and not milk.

Being the little sweetheart she is, she ate it anyway and didn't say anything till I noticed. "I don't waste the food you pay for. But it was kinda gross."

Check before you serve your children cereal. Don't use water.

Yeah, those feelings for each other never really went away...

The Great Pumpkin will not play on network television this year, for the first time since 1966.  Apple TV bought the broadcasting rights.

I have it on DVD.  But sad to see another childhood memory go the way of the dinosaur.  And I hate watching anything on the small screen.  I know how to Firecast my phone on to the big screen, but really, why the fuck should I be required to do that?

Netflix comes with my cable, and remarkably I can find and view things on Netflix.  That assuages my TV desires sufficiently.  It’s not even the cost, I just can’t be bothered to figure out more ways to see TV.  It’s more complicated than it’s worth.

Wifey and I had a talk after she watched Deep Impact.

"Let's say this really happened, what would we do with the kids?"

"And astronauts didn't Kamikaze into the rock and save us?"

"Did you really have to use that word?"

"I would probably give them something in a drink, or in food that would, you know, put them to sleep and make sure they didn't wake up so when the rock hit the Earth they'd never know about it. Then I'd go outside and let the fire, or wave or whatever incinerate me or wash me away as punishment for what I did."

"But what if, like in the movie, the little rock hit and it didn't really cause any damage here, but then they did fly into the other one and blew it up and the world was saved and you murdered all the girls but they would have survived?"

"I'd blow my brains out. What would you have done?"

"Well, I wouldn't have been a child murdering lunatic like you and would have waited to see if the world would be saved. Only when I knew we were doomed would I have done what you would have."

Admittedly, what we say we would do during a life-threatening crisis like this would differ from what we would actually do, especially in this day in age where we have world leaders who would say, "The comet is not real" or "It's only a small comet; it won't hurt us." Then Jecinta Ardern comes on and says, "This comet is real, and it may very well fuck us up. We have a plan; come with us if you want to live."
