Yikes.

Yes, people with cottages and cabins that don't heat them have to winterize.   Boats, jetskis, etc.

One of my boyfriends bosses has a small man made patio pond with huge koi fish.  I'll have to ask when they do with those.  Obviously bring them in, but I don't recall seeing any large aquariums in their house.  hmmm

22 degrees this morning, so those that procrastinated with getting ready might be in trouble come spring.   But, sometimes it needs to be sustained long periods of below freezing weather to do harm.   It'll come, but not just yet.

Forecast for the next several days is lows of 20s and possibly teens at night.  A little while ago I dropped off my travel trailer to have it winterized, so the residual water in the lines doesn’t freeze and crack my plumbing.

Growing up in California the idea that water left in the pipes can crack them sounds so strange.  Would it be cheaper to have indoor storage?

We just had the pool winterized which was $250.

Garden Hoses have to be blown out, or as I do it hold one end up high and lifting it as I walk across the yard draining it.   Even bringing them in the garages doesn't always save them from freezing, expanding and tearing open.

Irrigation sprinklers need blown out.  Just had that done in mid-October.  ($45)

My sister used to have a travel trailer also.  Outside storage was a $1/day ($30/month).   Inside storage would run about $250/month.     Blowing the lines out shouldn't be that expensive, there was only a few lines for the bathroom and kitchen area.

Just a part of living in the north and getting ready for the cold weather.

$100 to winterize the trailer, except I’ll need to get it dewinterized in the spring.  They put food grade glycol in it as antifreeze, although I know a guy that uses an air compressor to clear his of residual water.  I’ll still use it this winter, just won’t use the plumbing.

We're getting 2" of the white stuff tonight?   :(

I like the white stuff.  It needs to go past 2 feet before I call it too much of a good thing, and that only happens every 10 years or so around here.

My house last night.  Most snow we’ve had since 1985.  Schools started late today.  I’m on my way in.

We get frozen water mains up here when it gets real cold and there's only a few inches of snow.  The snow acts as insulation and if it's a dry winter the frost line goes even deeper.  You'll see an ice river at the curb where a pipe has frozen and broken.  If there's enough snow, they scrape together a "dyke" a few inches high to keep it from going into the street.

Fun in the north country

Barn is kept to a temperature of 45 degrees all winter.
But in any event all the pipes are wrapped in heat tape to prevent freezing.
Right now, its a cold 35 degrees outside.

Love,
Liz

Snow starting at 3AM it says possibly going into the early evening tomorrow.  I say, bring it on.  I really should move one of my trucks to the bottom of my 100 foot very steep driveway, but I'm too tired.  You see when it snows around here and I don't move a truck down, I run the risk of my truck ending up in my neighbor's living room across the street.  My driveway turns into a toboggan course.

Or the escaping water can't get through the frozen ground and goes sideways and winds up in someone's basement (happened to my neighbor a few years ago).
Or the pipe doesn't break but is non-functional until it thaws - sometime in mid-summer.

Can't complain too much about the weather here lately though - mostly clear and only two days with highs below freezing in the last two weeks.  Forecast is calling for another week of the same, with highs between 5°C and 10°C.  Could be a brown Christmas.

I woke at 6AM and nothing.  It's now approaching 9AM and a light misting snow is falling.  I saw some flurries a month ago when I was in New Mexico, one morning at 9000 feet, but this is the first around here.  I'm like a little kid when I see snow.

Started snowing here at around 9 AM.........
We must have about 3 inches of the white stuff.
It's covering everything, but it's not sticking to the road as of yet.

Love,
Liz

Same here, too. There's about 3" on the ground, but the streets are clear. Everything looks beautiful!

I definitely agree with that.   We went from bright fall colors to dingy gray skies the last few days, to a white ground.  One of the only things I like about winter........the white ground.

We came close here, but the snow all skidded to either side of Dallas.  Luckily it warmed up after the front blew by, and it shouldn't get below 38F/3C for the next week or so.

Currently 5C here. That's fucking stupid temperatures for north-central Alberta in mid-December. Rained overnight and the side roads/streets are icy. Wife went to work early this morning to make sure she got there on time.

I'm not going anywhere until after lunch.

That is all.

^It isn't so much the temperature that's fucked up (variability is normal, it was 10°C a few days ago, and that is no further from average than -20°C), it's the fucking rain in December.  That's just weird.  Winter precipitation is supposed to be solid.  What really sucks is that the warm weather is coming to an end so the fucking ice isn't going anywhere.

Tucson was 70F today.  Will dip below 50 tonight.

The place is crawling with snowbirds.

Started snowing here about 2PM and lasted until 7PM.....we must have another 3 inches or so on the ground. BUT, it's nice (maybe) to have a White Christmas finally.

Liz
