it’s a nautical allusion. In the days of sail and muzzle loading cannon, the iron cannon balls would be stacked for use in wooden trays called Monkeys. In port the wooden trays would be exchanged for fancier and prettier brass monkeys. Iron and brass contract in cold weather at different rates. The brass would contract faster than the iron. Thus, during a freeze the iron balls would pop off the monkey. “Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.”

Katie. Thank you. I will have to file this under "What I learned today" as I never knew this. But I did know that monkeys did not have brass balls or balls made out of any other type of metal.  ;D

A WOO to Katie.

Still cold here. T-storms and high winds this weekend. Least it won't be below freezing.

Yeah, I know you have real winter up north. Here in Dallas it’s cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey, literally.

The wind doesn’t help either.

Up here the last couple of days, those brass balls would have frozen and shattered. We smashed a 132 year record for the coldest high on March 4th.

I read that in a book recently. I wonder if you read the same book. :-p

It's 22 degrees here (and that's the high).
Good day to stay in and read a book by the fireplace.

Liz

On the plus side, it got above freezing for the first time in many weeks, 34 above F.  The warm, high in the sky sun melted a bit of snow too.

However, tomorrow and Sunday, we're slated to get six to ten inches of wet heavy snow.  Another winter that will never end.

it felt like spring most of the week, then this afternoon the temperature dropped and it clouded over.  Rain is in the forecaset.

We rarely get this much rain during our winters. It's part of the El Nino hitting California. They are getting record rains too.

It’s 72° but cloudy and very dreary.  Working in the garden, checking all the plantings after three nights of freezing temperatures.  Everything looks good.  Worried about the fruit trees.  I didn’t bag them.

Nice thing about an extra hour of daylight... mowed the yard for the first time in 2019.  Neighbors yard looked so bad, I mowed part of his too.

So I went around to collect all the batteries for leaf blower, string trimmer, etc.  And of course, family has unplugged everything to use plugs, and neglected to plug anything back in, because, that would require something like caring.  So I trimmed with the hedge clippers, and swept the sidewalks with a broom.  Nice exercise. LOL.

Cold this morning.........
22 degrees now but it's suppose to go up to a high of 33 degree today.
Not exactly bathing suit weather, but I just got a new Venus Bathing Suit Catalog in the mail. They have some interesting suits.

Love,
Liz

Strange warm light emanating from a giant yellow orb in the sky for three days in a row now.

Most unusual for this time of year.

:)

Sunlight is wonderful.  Too many days without it gets me in a very gloomy bitchy mood.

You're not the only one. It's a real thing called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD - what an appropriate acronym).
