I've seen the television specials, either directly about Disco, about the music era covered during and after the Disco era years, and similiar programs. So i know how Disco 'died' and how some people feel about it.
What's your view on Disco, was it great music or just a great load of crap?
And if you liked Disco, tell ONE of your favorite Disco era songs and maybe add a link to it.
I actually like Disco music. One of my favorite songs is "Last Dance" by Donna Summer from the movie Thank God It's Friday. It's also my favorite Donna Summer song.

You ask, "Was [disco] great music or just a great load of crap?" I think it was both.

Disco rose and fell before I was born, so I was unable to "experience" disco at the time of its heyday. But it resonated far beyond music, and it continues to do so today. Most people my age could name dozens and dozens of disco songs. You still hear the music everywhere, from clubs, to radio stations, to sporting events (where "YMCA" is played thousands of times each year).

There's also an unbreakable link between the rise of Disco and the rise of Gay Culture (and, unfortunately, between the spread of disco and the spread of AIDS).

Great or not, a load of crap or not, it was a legitimate phenomenon.

It was good and bad,but hey I have heard worse music over Disco music. It was really huge in the 70s because it made it easier for people to have something to dance to and listen on the radio, but after awhile people just got sick of it (I think people who hated it didn't like to dance, who knows). At least there were and still are people who enjoy the music today cause it brings back memories to people from the 70s of their youth and good times. It was so dam popular that even KISS did a disco song, "I Was Made For Loving You".

I confess to having several Dschinghis Khan and Jennifer Rush albums in my collection.

Henriette Strobel (the lady in red) had a dazzling smile. I think the original members are still around, all except Louis Hendrik Potgieter, the flamboyant dancer. He returned to South Africa and died of AIDS in 1994.

The song is credited to Gunther Mende, Candy DeRouge, and Jennifer Rush. I don't know which of them wrote the lyrics, but they contain some very tasty internal rhymes. I wish I could write lyrics like that.

Sometimes disco comes back to haunt you.

A few days ago a music publishing company reached out to me about a song I co-wrote in 1979. (I wrote the lyrics, a colleague wrote the music.) How they found my email address is a story in itself.

They wanted to know if I was the same person who, under an assumed name, wrote four songs for an obscure disco album.

If I was, indeed, the same person who signed a copyright agreement with them, they had something they wished to discuss.

Here comes the interesting part. Some rapper in New York wants to base a new  track on the one of the songs I co-wrote. No details, because the publishing company is still negotiating with the rapper's agency, which happens to be one of the biggest in the business.

It's possible the rapper will sample only a few bars of the original, or he may set the lyrics to a completely different tune. I've been asked to submit bank account details for future royalties, should there be any. It's been my experience, in both music and book publishing, that after the agent and publisher have taken their share, the amount of royalties left to split between co-creators is minimal. Sometimes it's less than the bank transfer charges.

Still, if this deal goes through, it'll be fun seeing what a rap artist makes of something I penned forty-five years ago.

I'd say it's a bit of an ego boost, even if nothing further comes from it.

I wrote a song once (almost 50 years ago, now), for my two daughters.

It started out, "The princess who had seven toes... had also a very big nose."

I've forgotten the rest of the lyrics, but it kinda went downhill from there, although my two young daughters loved it.

A woo for sharing that, and your talent.  ;D
