*1159: The Lawyer Pope: the only English Pope Adrian IV (nee Nicholas Breakspear), and law student, died in Italian town of Anagni, near Rome;

*1752: “Liberty”: Liberty Bell, with words from Leviticus, "Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof,” arrived in Philadelphia;

*1897: 1st American Subway: Tremont St. Subway in Boston opened – 1st underground rapid transit system in North America & 3rd oldest worldwide;

*1902: 1st Sci-Fi Movie: Georges Melies’ short black and white silent film A Trip to the Moon or Le Voyage dans la lune, considered the 1st science-fiction movie, was released in France, based on 2 popular novels of time: Jules Verne's From the Earth to the Moon & H. G. Wells' The First Men in the Moon;

*1906: IFIPA: 1906 – The International Federation of Intellectual Property Attorneys or Fédération Internationale des Conseils en Propriété Intellectuelle, FICPI; formerly known as the International Federation of Industrial Property Attorneys) was established in Switzerland; 

*1982: SpOC: US Air Force Space Command was activated and headquartered at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado redesignated the U.S. Space Force, became the 6th branch of US military.

*1995: R & R HOF: ribbon-cutting for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland was held – the Hall opened to the public next day.

*2014: Phillies’ No-No: Phillies became 11th team in MLB history to throw a combined no-hitter when 4 of their hurlers did not yield a hit in 7-0 W over the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field. LHP starter Cole Hamels went 6 innings + relievers Jake Diekman, Ken Giles, and Jonathan Papelbon tossing perfect innings to accomplish this rare feat.
 
FN1: PAY IT FORWARD: Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) day began in 2004 in New Zealand. It is a day to celebrate & encourage random acts of kindness. A day to celebrate kindness and the whole pay it forward mentality. It is celebrated September 1 in New Zealand and on February 17 in the US. The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation (RAK) was founded in 1995 in the US as a nonprofit headquartered in Denver, Colorado.
 
FN2: EMMA, NOT IMMA: Emma M. Nutt became the 1st woman telephone operator on Sep 1, 1878. Emma loved her job and worked it for 33 yrs. As a little side note:  Emma liked to say "I am very thankful that my first name was not Imma". Today, the position of telephone operator has been eliminated, being replaced by automation in telephone service.

*1609: Hudson on Hudson: English explorer Henry Hudson aboard Half Moon entered present-day NY Harbor, and began sailing up the Hudson River to Albany;

*1777: Battle of Cooch Bridge: in a skirmish in New Castle County, Delaware, the Flag of the United States was flown in battle for the first time;

*1783: Treaty of Paris: the American Revolutionary War ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris by the USA and the Kingdom of Great Britain;

*1868: Edo:  the city changed its name to Tokyo (Eastern capital) when 700-year shogunate period ended as new emperor, Meiji, moved his residence there;

*1925: Shenandoah: the 1st US Navy Airship, USS Shenandoah (ZR-1), crashed in a storm near Caldwell, OH killing 14, with 29 survivors;

*1940: Seelöwe: Hitler ordered the invasion in England called Operation Seelöwe or Sealion;

*1944: Last Transport: the 68th & final transport of Dutch Jews (including Anne Frank) left Westerbork Camp, Netherlands for Auschwitz concentration camp;

*1981: CEDAW: The UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, an international bill of rights for women, is instituted;

*2004: Beslan School: in Russia the Beslan School Hostage Crisis ended on its 3rd day with the deaths of 300 people. Half of whom were children.     
 
FN1: WHERE IS IT? San Marino, officially the Republic of San Marino (Italian: Repubblica di San Marino) aka the Most Serene Republic of San Marino (Italian: Serenissima Repubblica di San Marino), is an enclaved microstate surrounded by Italy, situated on Italian Peninsula on the NE side of the Apennine Mts. Its size is just over 24 sq. miles, with 32,000 residents – the smallest population of all the members of the Council of Europe. It is the oldest surviving sovereign state and constitutional republic in the world, as continuation of the monastic community founded on September 3, 301 by the stonecutter Marinus of Arba, Italy.
 
FN2: BRAVE MARINERS: Finally, in 2001 Merchant Navy Remembrance Day was recognized by the Canadian Parliament, which designated September 3 as a day to recognize the contributions and sacrifices of the Canadian merchant mariners. The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax, Nova Scotia has a Merchant Navy Memorial  "In memory of 2,200 known Canadian Merchant Seamen and 91 Canadian vessels lost by enemy action and those who served in cause of freedom - WW I 1914-18; WW II 1939-45; and Korean Conflict 1950-53."
 
FN3: RAREBIT or RABBIT?  Welsh rarebit or Welsh rabbit is a traditional Welsh dish made with a savory sauce of melted cheese & various other ingredients, and served hot, after being poured over slices of toasted  bread or served in a  chafing dish like a fondue. The name of this dish originates from 18th Century Britain.
 
FN4: CYMRY: The Welsh (Welsh: Cymry) are an ethnic group native to Wales. "Welsh people" applies to those who were born in Wales (Welsh: Cymru) & those who have Welsh ancestry, perceiving themselves or being perceived as sharing a cultural heritage and shared ancestral origins with the Welsh people – the  Cymry.

Today, September 29,  is NATIONAL VFW DAY FN1, and WORLD HEART FEDERATION (WHF) DAY FN2, and MICHAELMAS, THE FEAST OF SAINT MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL, FN3. And Cuz Dom says it’s also INTERNATIONAL COFFEE DAY or LA GIORNATA INTERNAZIONALE de CAFFE.

*1789: US Army: the US War Department established a regular army with several hundred men;

*1829: MPS: the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS), aka "the Met," the territorial police force of Greater London was established;

*1910: Urban League: The National Urban League began in NYC as The Committee on Urban Conditions Among Negroes;

*1915: 1st Phillies’ Pennant: Phillies clinched their 1st NL pennant as Hall of Fame RHP Grover Cleveland Alexander tossed a 1-hitter blanking the Boston Braves 5-0 – and it took 35 years before the franchise wins another NL flag in 1950;

*1950: 1st Answering Machine: the 1st telephone answering machine was created by Bell Laboratories;

*1954: “The Catch”: in a World Series game best remembered for Willie Mays’ spectacular over-the-shoulder grab, "THE CATCH," of a ball hit to deep to center field in the Polo Grounds, robbing Vic Wertz of an extra hit, and Dusty Rhodes became the second player in World Series player to end a game with a homer to beat the Cleveland Indians 5-2 in Game 1 of the Fall Classic;

*2020: “Too Hot Debate”: Chris Christie said President Trump was "too hot" in the 1st  debate between Trump & Democrat Joe Biden which deteriorated into bitter taunts and near chaos as Trump repeatedly interrupted Biden, and the two talked over each other.
         
 
FN1: HONOR THE DEAD…HELP THE LIVING: The VFW was established Sep 29, 1899 by a group of veterans from the Spanish-American war. It has since grown to be the nation’s largest group of combat veterans. They continue “to honor the dead by helping the living.” The VFW promote patriotism, good will and youth scholarships. They also provide military assistance and community service programs, promote youth activities and volunteer many hours in their local communities.

WHF is committed to uniting its members to lead the global fight vs heart disease & stroke, with a focus on low-& middle-income countries. FN3: ALL ANGELS: Michaelmas, the feast of St Michael the Archangel (also the Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, the Feast of the Archangels, or the Feast of Saint Michael and All Angels) is a day in the Western Christian calendar which occurs on 29 September. Because it falls near the Equinox, it is associated in the Northern hemisphere with the beginning of Autumn and the shortening of days. St. Michael is the greatest of all the archangels; he is honored for defeating Lucifer in the war in heaven, and he is patron saint of banking,  grocers and the police. St Michael led the angelic forces against Satan to expel him and his followers from heaven (Revelation 12:7-9). In his hand are the scales with which he weighs the souls of the dead so that they can be consigned to heaven or hell.
