If you're going to break up with a girl, don't do it 2 days before a big event, such as Prom or Homecoming.

Just got a call from a good friend and her daughter is a wreck because her boyfriend just broke up with her.   Prom is Saturday.  She is the sweetest girl.
I want to hurt somebody right now.

The best thing to do in this case is for the girl to go to the prom with other girls (that don't have dates). They can still have fun together and still most likely get to dance with any guy they choose. The fact that she could/should go will set a point with her ex-boy friend that simply says "I can get along without you".
