Depends on the situation. In combat, my dad says RTOs would run the handset cable up their sleeve, and put the radio inside a backpack.

I recall reading a book where the Brits during the guerrilla war in Malaysia created a way for the point man to signal the patrol leader using a bow, and not their common hand signals.

If the platoon leader was a short timer, he did not want the RTO man anywhere near him.  I have had some long and very fast runs because of that. Glad I only packed a PRC-25 for a month or so. The Brits learned a lot about guerrilla war in Malaysia.

An old post in the string but it caught my eye. The reason you didn't want the RTO man anywhere near you is the RTO, besides carrying the radio was carrying the antenna for said radio. I was, in my military days, involved in radio direction finding. If we knew your operating frequency, a minimum of three stations could find your location within a reasonable level of accuracy, tell the artillery and shoot you from great distances. If you were mobile and we could guesstimate how fast you were moving, we could be rather accurate at finding you with one DF station and ...

Don't know if this is interesting or just plain crazy.

The NHL winter classic is being played tonight. That's where hockey goes old school and plays outside...in the cold. That's how hockey started, before indoor arenas with all the creature comforts you could hope for.

Tonight the Minnesota Wild are playing the St. Louis Blues.
Interesting... it's now minus 9 degrees. The crowd outside watching...38 thousand!  Hey, it's Minnesota...we have warm clothes here. :D

BTW...at end of second period Blues lead 6-2. :facepalm:
