What are some of the most unsexy words in erotic fiction? Or just plain unsexy words.

I can't remember what story I was working on, but I used "intermittently" while I was writing it. I kind of stopped and looked at the sentence, then said to myself, "Wow, that is probably the most unsexy word I have ever seen in an erotic story...it's gotta go."

So, "intermittently" is first on my list =)

This thread is not about what turns you on or turns you off. It's about the words themselves. There are other threads for "what turns you on or off." It's not about story codes that you prefer or do not like, there are other threads for that.

For example: many people find shit play to be unsexy; however, is the word "shit" unsexy?

Ejaculate, vagina, gland, penis, mammary, "sexual intercourse," blond, and "10 inch cock."

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against blonds, it's just annoying how women are almost always described as blond in erotic fic, and guys always have a 10 inch cock. If I am reading a story and the author goes into a looks spiel, I skip a paragraph or three and gloss right over it.

I also have nothing but contempt for: "throbbing tool," "love canal," "his/her member," "his/her sex," and "box" (when used in reference to pussy). Seriously, are you writing porn for kindergarteners? No? You're writing porn for adults? Ok then; do everyone a favor and  use adult words. Kkthnxbai.

My big turn off word is "Cunt". It has such a negative connotation that I can't use it or like it anywhere. I don't even think I've used that one on my ex wife and she'd be the closest contender for the title.

For me its death.  Killing a main character or as a plot device.

It's hard to dissemble.  As the author, I'll never use burnt-out nouns like 'pussy' and 'cock'.  -But some of my characters will in-dialogue.

Personally, I'll never use the words; 'veggie', or 'cope', or 'microfiche', because I juss... they just struck me the wrong-way whenst I first heard them uttered.

Going way back to old school porn

Pikestaff

the phrase "He sheathed his might sword in her"

not words persay but I get stuck filling in a bunch of back ground story some times and I have been told that it gets to be a bit much to muddle through.

I disagree with what you say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it

I'd have to agree about "speculum," and "birthing." Max Hardcore uses speculums a lot in his films...total turn off.

"Expectorate." Yeah, I'd have to say that it might be even more unexy than "intermittently." Although, I usually do like a little expectorating =) Ok, sometimes a lot =) Alright, alright, I fucking love expectoration, but the word sucks.

"Babymaker" is definitely unsexy. Can't say I've heard "gitch" before.

Yeah, just about anyone of those silly little words that assholes come up with, because they think that they'll disgrace the English language by using profanity in an erotic story, totally ruins it for me. I can't even read that shit.

lol girl just copy one out of the latest issue of Penthouse... I usually hate those stories because they sound like they were written by the same guy who uses a thesaurus of unsexy words. lol

You fellows crack me up.  OK, write a sex tale that does not contain the words "pussy," "cock," "thrusting," or "cum."  Then go grow a vagina.

I agree completely.  Whoever said writing (good) erotic fiction was easy?  If the flow of the story is to be maintained, one must strike a balance between keeping the narrative simple and direct while not running a few favorite words into the ground.  Any word is fair game if its use is appropriate to the context or speaks to the character or state of mind of the person using it.  Take for instance the much maligned "cunt."  When an author chooses this word over any number of words that mean the exact same thing, might we infer he or she is trying to tell us something about the speaker more so than that thing the speaker seeks to describe, to wit: a female sex organ?  Let's not tie anyone's hands here.

Having made my pitch for not banning words from erotic literature, here are some words I would like to see banned.  Red blooded, God fearing Americans need not worry, my short list of words so unsexy as to never be used by anyone in any context applies only to British writers.  And the word are:
"mum" for mom or mother, apparently.
    "bum" for butt, ass, etc.
"arse"  Give me a break, Chaucer's dead.
"knickers" for panties, but I always get a mental picture of those poofy short pants Montgomery Burns must have worn as a lad.

Is this asking too much of you bloody blokes?  I'll even humour you by throwing in an extra "u" where it's not really needed.
