Allow me to tackle a two year old post.

I've mentioned elsewhere that I really enjoy the music of the Indigo girls.  Many moons ago I attended one of their concerts and took my brother.  Now, I'm not homosexual.  In fact, given that my wife would rather watch the cooking channel than talk about, let alone do or have sex, I'm not 100% sure that I'm any kind of sexual (does internet porn count?).  I do like pictures of lesbians.

I attended the concert, blissfully unaware of any associated sexual orientation of the performers.  The next day my brother commented that everyone around us was "gay or lesbian."  (Isn't lesbian "gay?").  I hadn't noticed, but then recalled that having been there with my brother, we probably fit in just fine.

Fast forward a few years, and the Indigo Girls happened to be in concert near where I was working, and my mother happened to be in town.  Great!  Take mom to see the folk music.

The concert was held in a botanical garden, with couples all over the the place on blankets.  At our feet were two older ladies in mumu's going at it, and the lesbian nature of the crowd quckly became apparent.  I knew no lesbians, and had seen no lesbians, but made a mental note of a very high percentage of "butch" women in attendance; considerably higher than one might see in a general societal cross section.

At one point I maneuvered for a position closer to the stage to watch the guitar work (they're good), and inadvertantly bumped the styrofoam cooler of a large intimidating woman.  She inquired regarding my preference of corporal punishment, and offered her services in beating me senseless; I've been regularly attacked by insurgents and frequently play target for the taliban, but that woman made me nervous.

I can't say I saw any women who channeled the mythical porn image of lesbians; the crowd represented more what I'd call "real people," and I can't say that any of what I saw turned me on.  I was there for the concert, after all.  It was an interesting position to be in, mother there and all.

I never really understood the butch thing, either.  Even though when I was younger I always had a thing for women who could beat me up.  Not that they did, but while I have every appreciation in the world for the soft and feminine, I also always liked a strong woman.

This has been a message from someone who has no clue what he's talking about.

Nothing like resurrecting a 2-1/2 year old thread!

First off, if there's anything that posts on KB make clear is that there's often no explanation for what turns us on and turns us off. The simplest, and most honest, answer, is because it does.

Second, "butch" lesbians conform to Straight America's stereotype of "what a lesbian looks like." So, you see one, you immediately think "lesbian!" or, conversely, when you think of a lesbian, you think of a butch lesbian. If you saw me walking down the street you wouldn't give me a second glance, and the same is true for the vast majority of lesbians. Well, except for Rosie O'Donnell.

Full disclosure: on a strictly superficial level, the "butch look" does nothing for me. But, as I mentioned above, that's just my personal preference. But to generalize about the entire lesbian community, as some have done in this thread, fails to bear personal preferences in mind.

Third, to answer the original question -- why do butch lesbians chose to dress like they do? -- the reasons are many. I seriously doubt hormones have anything to do with it, nor, to Circ's original point, does "man-hate" have much to do with it either. Part of it, I think, is what Farmer Miles points out, their refusal to conform to societal stereotypes of "what a woman should look like." Part of it, too, is what RopeFiend indicates, and exterior expression of an interior feeling, perhaps akin to the way some -- but only some -- gay men prefer to dress as women.

Finally, I've met many gay women who fit into all the different little boxes that society insists on putting us in (and which we, at times, insist on putting ourselves in). And I can say with completely that the "butch thing" has absolutely nothing to do with true femininity. Real femininity has nothing to do with personal looks or personal comportment. Yes, they "look" masculine (again, in compliance with societal norms), but they are no less feminine than any other "type" of lesbian, or any straight woman, for that matter.

Goes to prove that there is no telling what turns anyone on or off.  My turn ons may turn someone else off, and that goes for everybody on the planet-RHL

Rosie O Donnel is a lesbian?  Just as well; no man should ever be attracted to that.  She and Rosanne Barr are nothing more than living, breathing unpleasantness.  Yikes.

I noted in my limited observation at the aforementioned concerts that an exceptionally high percentage of lesbians in attendance were "butch."  Were they all conforming to the stereotype?

Thanks for the compliment, Licks, but what I meant was you wouldn't know I was a lesbian just by looking at me...

I lean toward the het side, but a butch dyke can really get my juices going! (Lipstick has always wigged me out a bit.)

Besides, not all of us can choose how we look.  For instance my ass has always been 2 sizes larger than my top half.  I've never had a boney butt, even when I weighed 115lbs.

The physical is one thing. The attitude can be another. What one finds exciting is always an individual thing.

What makes you feel whole and yourself doesn't always meet with others expectations.

Some would call me butch, not because I have short hair, wear flannel, etc, but because I have a an affinity for full size, large caliber battle rifles. And I have no problem showing my expertise and competence with them. And I stand up to macho like it's a wet paper sack.
