Gia,

Sorry to hear that.  We won the Stanley Cup last week (hockey) and there was no rioting or such.

Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane were written during the making of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.  Capitol records said they had to have a new single for the American market, so those two songs were given to them for that purpose.  After a song had been released the Beatles did not ever put them on a new album release.  They were supposed to have been on Sgt Pepper.
I made an iPod mix for myself that included those songs.  I have them right after Within You and Without You.  They fit perfectly into the feel of the album.
You've probably read that George Martin lamented that the songs weren't included.

That's interesting Peter... I cant bring myself to split the flow of that record, so I have them in my iPod at the end after the end groove. BTW - to delve into a little more SPLHCB history, I have both the stereo and mono mixes from the box sets and like the Grammy winning mixer of the album, Geoff Emerick, I too believe the mono to be far superior. The minor, yet important differences make it a far more enjoyable listening experience for me.

According to the liner notes in the mono box set, there are numerous differences between the two versions, some obvious, some subtle, and they all add up to make the mono version a true gem, in a field of Beatle gems!

I have to get back to work now, but I intend to expound on the many great points of the mono mix of SPLHCB.

XOXO

A Day in the Life Lyrics sell for $1.2 million

John Lennon's handwritten lyrics to the epic Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band closer "A Day in the Life" sold today for an impressive $1.2 million, a bid that far exceeded its initial $500,000 to $700,000 pre-auction estimate. According to Bloomberg , three buyers were vying for the piece of Beatles memorabilia at Sotheby's of New York, and the winner was an unidentified American who phoned in the $1.2 million bid. Despite breaking the million-dollar threshold, the handwritten lyrics narrowly missed becoming the highest-priced Beatles lyric sheet to sell at auction: In 2005, the hand-penned lyrics to "All You Need is Love" went for $1.25 million.

As Rolling Stone previously reported, the handwritten lyrics to "A Day in the Life" were once the property of Beatles road manager Malcolm "Mal" Evans and represent the legendary song as a work in progress: There were spelling mistakes and words crossed out as Lennon developed the track, which Rolling Stone ranked as one of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. On the back side of the lyric sheet, however, is a more polished version of "A Day in the Life," written in all capital letters, with a break in Lennon's lyrics where he anticipated Paul McCartney would add his famous "Woke up, fell out of bed…" bridge. "A Day in the Life" is regarded as one of the final true collaborations between Lennon and McCartney and a song that Rolling Stone said "made rock's possibilities seem infinite."

The conclusion of the Sotheby's auction ends an adventure of sorts for the prized lyric sheet. Sotheby's of London first sold the sheet in 1992, then in 2006 it returned to the block when New York auction house Bonham's hosted a "sealed bid" auction, at which point it failed to sell. At the time, Bonham's estimated that Lennon likely penned both versions of the lyrics in the morning and afternoon of January 17th, 1967.

Cool to see this.  A Day in the Life is at the top of my list of favorites.  I heard the song about a week before the album was released in the summer of 1967.

YOU SEE?!!! YOU SEE?!!! Events like this never happen to the Rolling Stones... Older people ALWAYS have stories about when Sgt. Pepper came out.... or the first time they saw A Hard Days Night... or when they heard that the Beatles broke up...

People remember their lives to the Beatles. I swear.... sometimes I am so jealous I was not born back then! Watcher pointed out before, that I would have made a great 60's girl... sigh...

Anyway... this story is awesome! Thanks Watcher, love you huge. A WOO for this post!

XOXO

It's never too late to be a 60's girl Gia.  The hippies are back and they are pissed.  Put on some bell bottoms and a tie dyed bikini top and march in some sort of protest parade.  There are causes aplenty these days.  Actually, the Beatles weren't part of protest much, but they were parallel to what was going on those days.  I liked the music of the Rolling Stones in those days  too...just like I liked that of  the Beach Boys.  I loved the music the Beatles made and was always amazed at how many different types of songs they wrote.  They plucked us out of the bobby vintons and pat boones of the day and led us into kickass rock and roll.  When I first heard the feedback at the beginning of I Feel Fine, I knew that rock and roll had made a sea-change shift.
I would say though that Lennon-McCartney as a song-writing team were so powerful together and less so apart.  Beatles were together as a group for such a small amount of time.  The Stones are still going, and have made some great music for longer than did the Beatles.  Their music can't even begin to compare with the Fab Four.

This Paperback Writer clip features the band miming on the ITV sound stage filmed 19 May 1966, in color for the Ed Sullivan Show. *Note Paul's lip and broken tooth... caused by his moped accident he had December 26, 1965, in which he fell face-first onto the pavement, busting the tooth and driving it through his upper lip.

This means he went almost half a year without having the tooth fixed (he finally did have it capped for the '66 summer tour).

This is like the freakin Cola Wars - Relax people!

I'm a 55 year old musician who was around during all those days. At first glance the Stones were just a good rock band and the Beatles, well the Beatles were untouchable and still are and probably will ever be during our life times.

However, give credit where credit is due. The Stones have written some amazing songs and they certain have stood the test of time. There is no question that the Beatles push the boundaries of music far more than the Stones ever did, but read the lyrics to "Wild Horses' sometime while you listen to the song. It's a great piece of music.

I laugh to myself sometimes when I hear people talking about all the sub-sub-sub genres of music. "Naw that's not Ambient Techno that's Acid Drum and Bass!" - I laugh because when a real artist makes real music it defies category. Sure it's rock or pop or whatever, but once an artist creates real art, it has a life of it's own.

The late '60 was a time of more musical expression that any we have known in the past hundred years. There are many reasons for this, not the least of which is the technology that grew-up in that era. But back then, the entire point was to be totally unique and original. No one tried to put an affectation into their voice so they sounded like those fools on American Idol or whomever the FOTM was. Can you imagine Hendrix sitting there saying, "Damn listen to Jethro Tull go! I should try to sound more like that!" HA!

Nowadays if you surf the radio channels and try to figure out who the artist is you will find very little distinction in most of them. Back in the early 60's the Record companies were not billion-dollar industries and hence had little or no control over what an artist did. Today, they wont even look at an artist if he/she doesn't match the demograph-forecasted-formula-Type they are looking for. And That Is Not Art - that is greed.

So Today, on the 30th anniversarry of John Lennon's murder, open you ears and minds to real art and not just some new song that will make Lady Gaga go gaga.

So Today, on the 30th anniversarry of John Lennon's murder...

*anniversary - and its not of his murder. Today would have been his 70th birthday. John was killed on Dec. 8th 1980 (Jim Morrisons birthday) and I was but two years old.

Nowadays if you surf the radio channels and try to figure out who the artist is you will find very little distinction in most of them.

This is the sad truth.
