The name of this board refers to the film 'Room 1408,' Staring John Cussack. A hotel room no one gets out of alive or sane. I thought it appropriate for my Rowdy room creation.

A few references to the no13 in the film.
Grm

Several places in the movie have allusions to the supposedly superstitious number 13.

The most common reference is the room number itself, 1408 (1+4+0+8=13) as well as the fact that the room is on the 14th floor. In most hotels, the 14th floor is really just the 13th floor renumbered. However, other numbers allude to 13. According to hotel manager Gerald Olin, the Dolphin opened in October 1912 (1+9+1+2=13).At one scene, the temperature shows 45-40 (4+5+4+0=13) On the inside of the lock of the hallway door to 1408, the number 6214 can be seen (6+2+1+4=13). When Mike first opens the Bible, he turns to 2 Samuel chapter 11 (2+11=13).

When Mike is trying to get his wife Lily to send police, he gives the address as 2254 Lexington (2+2+5+4=13). At the end of the film, the voice from the telephone says "we are 5...we are 8" (5+8=13). Olin makes mention of 56 deaths in room 1408. If Enslin and his wife had perished in the room, there would have been a total of 58 deaths (see above). Even something as innocent as
Mike asking the "engineer" to just walk in the room "6 or 7 feet" (6+7=13). The only time that the actual number 13 appears is when Olin is taking Enslin to room 1408 and he says that "The owners don't think that 1408 is evil, they just pretend that it doesn't exist like the 13th floor.", and when Mike first gets the postcard telling him not to go to the room, he writes down that the numbers 1408 equal 13. At the book signing, the tallest stack of books totaled 13.

Towards the end of the film (end of chap 17), the clock in the room is on 3:38, changes to 3:37 but only for a split second, then changes to 3:36 and continues to run normally (3+3+7=13). Mike Enslin has a Chicago White Sox hat. The team officially adopted the "White Sox" name in 1903 (1+9+0+3=13). We know Mike's full known name to be Michael Enslin (13 letters). The song that kept playing on the radio, "We've Only Just Begun", was sung by The Carpenters (there are 13 letters in The Carpenters). There even appear to be references outside of the fourth wall: The film is rated PG-13. The film release date was June, 2007 (or 6/07: 6+0+7=13). And finally, the runtime of the movie is 94min (9+4=13).

Then any attempt at a meaningful discussion where two or more opposing views and/or opinions are bandied about is meaningless in a room that no one comes out of alive or sane?  Just asking...

well i never claimed to be sane, just like a bit of logic in a discussion.  Of course that went out the window when I was working in the navy as a psych tech.  Its tough to be logical when the particpants are on another planet.

Why 1408? Well why not? After all Joseph Heller named his book Catch 18 but Leon Uris had a book published called Mila 18 the same year by the same publisher and they told him to change it. So I insist that it should be changed to room 1313! I demand it! Damn I believe there should be a constitutional amendment to ensure that it is called room 1313!!

Is that silly enough?

So what F'ing movie do I watch on TNT over the weekend?

As well as part of the immediately following encore?

Yep, "1408".

Needless to say, I do not like horror movies.
I had hoped it was a porn movie and 1408 was the room they used in making their movie.

Just one more case of sychronicity in the world.

I thought this had to do with the movie. The Stephen King story was so different.

I have read some Stephen King, but I find his novels rambling and unnecessarily long, I know he has many fans who enjoy his meandering style of writing, but I don't have the patience for it.

1408 was a short story, and you should try different points in his career. You might find something you like. Stories made into movies are a lot better, like Cycle Of The Werewolf and Needful Things, which is long but broken up into small sections of characters, most of which collide near the end. The Dark Half is another better in story form. In any case, try his books of short stories. You might like.

[Re: Gary] You must like at least one horror film. Maybe a classic, or something from the 70s or 80s. Something ingenious?

Room 101 would be fun too, but probably a whole other topic. People come out alive and sane, oddly enough, and that's a whole other kind of scary.

Everyone knows what's in Room 101.

Two years later, I'm finally getting around to looking through the forum. Sorry. I have to control myself better. Old threads. Yikes!

As you may know rache this forum has been going about three years? So there are a lot of old threads, but I never delete them and I like to think old threads are a bit like old soldiers.
When I first envisioned a section where anything goes I was moderating  Rapeboard, run by an eccentric Russian gent, I called it the Rowdy Room. So when I set about creating KB I naturally wanted a Rowdy Room. It has attracted much criticism from those who run other boards and many who use this one too. They don't like the insults that fly around in here nor its popularity, one old member doesn't even want to see it listed on the home page, very odd. But these people do not understand the rowdy room's function on this message board, when I was moderating the RB we were like most forums getting a few miscreants who needed a lot of moderating and even banning. In principle I am against banning and some people do not stay banned and will always find ways of re entering the forum. It is also a place for those who want to let of steam to let rip, which allows those who are only interested in sex and other topics to go around unmolested.

Yeah, I'm not beating on anyone but myself. I never fight back, so it makes me feel brave. I do feel goofy when I see a thread 3 months or a year old and I think I almost have something to say, but then I talk myself out of it because maybe the horse's ghost will get pissed and I hate confrontation with ethereal animals.

Rowdy Rooms :) Why is it so fun getting angry? Another question for God when I die...He has a lot to answer for and I'm making a list.

rache -

look upon resurrecting (no pun intended) an old thread as starting a new thread, since many members probably were not around when the original thread was first established and now they have the opportunity to add their thoughts.

Hmmmm a room where no one comes out alive or sane.  What a perfect place for my last math teacher to go!

My red headed cousin Sara said it wasn't my math teacher's fault that I didn't learn math.  She said, "Pix, math can't penetrate a blonde head!"

It's was an ok movie that needed a lot of horror added to it. Talked about being scary rather than just being it.
