I have a bit of a backlog going in my book collection. I just finished Soul Music by Terry Pratchett, and am now working on Armageddon Outta Here by Derek Landy, then move onto Bedlam by the same, then The Essential Sandman Volume 5 by Neil Gaiman.

Extinguishing the Flame is available on Amazon and supports Australian Bush fire relief.

Just got into the newest book from a favorite author, Nevada Barr.  A former Park Ranger with the U. S. Forest Service, she's written many fun books about Anna Pigeon, a Park Ranger who moves around to several National Parks.

The new book, "What Rose Forgot" is a big departure and is deeply chilling.  Rose wakes up outside in just a hospital gown and totally confused about who she is, what's going on and soon finds herself picked up and back in a locked memory care unit.

The author lets us know soon into the book that Rose is being drugged and it seems family is involved. She plots another escape and begins to fight to take back her memory and her life.

I finding the book so disturbing, maybe because I'm old too.  A friend is now dealing with his mother starting to loose her memory and we have a neighbor who's wife is now in long term care.  She's forgotten her husband and even how to stand up...just sits in a wheel chair.

Nevada Barr, who delighted me with her depictions of National Parks while spinning a tale of adventure, now brings to her pages the horrors old people may have to face...and indeed many are along with their family's.

I've just started the book, but I'll give it four stars.

Well trained and been made compliant....by my cat Neville

My aunt died of early onset Alzheimer’s at the ripe old age (not) of 58.  We all watched in horror as she lost her faculties one at a time.  Then she couldn’t recognize her own children, then finally, her husband of 37 years.  He visited her every day, swearing somehow that she was still cognizant deep inside. So difficult to watch.

Hugs to you both.   It's a sad thing to happen to someone.   And very difficult to be a loved one of these sweet souls.

Currently reading another of Dan's books.     Daniel Silva's   "The New Girl"

I'm having a tough time putting it down.  Spy stuff, which isn't my normal genre.

Just finished reading "The Authorized Roy Orbison" a superb history of the singer written by those who knew him best, his sons Roy Jnr, Wesley and Alex Orbison. It tells of the highs and lows of his life and career, the loss of his first wife Claudette in a motorbike accident and then the devastating fire that claimed the lives of two sons, Tony and Roy DeWayne.

My read of the year so far.

Relic
SciFi by Alan Dean Foster

Set in the very far future.  Mankind had built and lost several galactic empires until one of the inevitable and recurring ‘dust ups’ led to an engineered plague getting out of control.

Aliens find the last surviving human on one of the many dead human planets and decide our species is worth saving.  They obviously never heard of Trump.

The Last Days of August.

True story about the death of porn actress August Ames that made a comment on Twitter about not wanting to work with a gay male.  She was lambasted on Twitter.  Within a week she committed suicide.
It delves into the interactions of porn actresses, actors, producers.
It's sad to read.

The Woolgrowers Companion
Fiction/mystery
A young woman living on the family sheep farm in Australia. Having lived out on a property this is as close as it gets. I love the way the book reads, the pace. The people, and the casual exploitation of local indigenous people. Plus the advice of the ‘Woolgrowers Companion’.

‘The Burnt Country ‘is the follow up by the same author.

Where the Crawdads Sing
Fiction/ murder mystery.
A young girl brings herself up in the coastal Bayou country of the USA. A life story woven around the love of wildlife , with a murder tossed in.

Okay, so I'm starting to chew through my backlog at the moment. (It's not very long, but I'm not the world's fastest reader, and I have Munchkin to deal with.) Right now, I have "Armageddon Outta Here" by Derek Landy by my bedside table. It's a short story anthology, based in the Skulduggery Pleasant universe. (Yes, I'm a 35-year-old male reading supernatural young adult fiction and writing supernatural/sci-fi very adult fiction. As you can guess, I am not worried about what people think of me.) Fortunately I have plenty of blood and plasma donations lined up, so I can chew through a bit more than I would just from five minutes a night before sleepytimes.

Recently came across a copy of the original Lolita. I was surprised how much it relied on innuendo and reading between the lines.

I don't want to give anything away that could be considered a spoiler but one thing that was revealed about Dolores cracked me up.

The movie made from the novel was released in 1962 and one of my news feeds reported the obituary of the title character played by Sue Lyon, who was 14 at the time. She died over the weekend, at the age of 73.

I read that. Remember Humbert (I think I fucked up his name) is not very reliable, so you have to remember that everything is tinted rose.

No, you got it right. First name Humbert, last name Humbert.

Apropos of nothing, I knew a kid in high school named Alan Allen.

Just started reading "When I was You" by Minka Kent... an intriguing mystery story that is growing on me with each page turned...
