Water for Gotham, a History by Gerard T Koeppel

Interesting history on how clean water is taken for granted by us but wasn't the case not too many years ago.

Wow, that sounds right up my alley!

I read a book Koeppel wrote about the building of the Erie Canal, so he seems a natural to over this topic.

If you put your judgements aside, and recognize it as coming from a specific time and place, you'll find it one of the most penetrating American novels ever written.

Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man
by Mary L. Trump.  I wish Ms. Trump had collaborated with a professional writer.  She is a seasoned professional mental health expert, so she writes in a clinician’s style.  It’s rather dry and methodical in its tone.  But fascinating information about Trump’s childhood and family.  Confirming again he’s one fucked up dude.

Welcome To The World Baby Girl by Fannie Flagg, published 1998.

The story starts in the small town of Elmwood Springs, Missouri in the late 1940s. Knowing what I do about the author I expected a humorous, even whimsical story about life in small town America.

I was surprised to find a much deeper story, one that bounces around from the 40s to the 70s. The first half was entertaining, if a little hard to follow, but the second half of the book turns out to be a heart rending tale about covert racism in America.

As the story unfolded, I was reminded of another book I read recently, Underground Railroad by Colin Whitehead (thank you MissBarbara).

Started in the Earthsea novels by Ursula K Le Guin but I've been doing my own writing and sitting worrying so much (distractions) that I haven't done much reading or writing.  Need to get through all this crap.  Bad news seems to come daily.

The Iliad. The Lattimore translation. Lots of bronze spears through the head. Nothing sexy. Women as chattel. Seems like all the prize lists are, well, you can have this woman or this tripod.

Now Peleides set forth the prizes for the third contest,
for the painful wrestling, at once, and displayed them for the Danaans.
There was a great tripod, to set over fire, for the winner.
The Achaians among themselves valued it at the worth of twelve oxen.
But for the beaten man he set in their midst a woman
skilled in much work of her hands, and they rated her at four oxen.

-- The Iliad of Homer, Lattimore translation, Book 23, lines 700-705

Apparently those Achaians liked them some tripods.

“Old Man’s War” by John Scalzi. Best science fiction book ever written IMHO.

My eldest daughter and I have been reading books to each other over the phone since the lockdown. First we read The Unbearable Lightness of Being, then The Iliad, and now Old Man’s War. I thought she had read it, but she hasn’t, so it’s being a treat to share it with her. We’ll probably read the series.

"The Alienist", by Caleb Carr.
About my third or fourth time "reading" this book. (I've been listening to audiobooks for many years)

I find it fascinating each time. I love the gritty descriptions of old New York City. Add to that the twisting plot ooand early day forensics, it makes for a fun listen/read.

I'm still amused by how I first got the book, back when I still flipped pages. There was an old firehouse that was now a store selling used books. We'd pass by on Sunday nights on the way to meet friends, when it was closed.

One day we were in the area and it was open. Took time to stop in. We were met by a fellow with a full beard and twinkling eyes. Instant "like" appeal.

I started checking the shelves of thousands of paperbacks, when the owner approached me and ask just a couple questions about my tastes in books. He then went to a nearby spot and pulled out "The Alienist". Looked it over and bought it. I'd never have selected that book on my own. I'm still amazed how this guy picked a book for me based on just a couple questions.

Yes, the former fire station now book store still had the brass pole the firemen slid down when answering a call. Sadly, the city made the owner board it over.

Congrats on finding "The Alienist".   When I was working in forensic nursing many of us urged others to read the book.  An enjoyable read.

I am currently reading "Edgar Allan Poe, Complete Tails and Poems".  I had read bits of Poe over the years and I found this book in a used book store (where I do most of my book shopping).   Wow...   I learned some new things about Poe and now reading the first story in the book is the world's introduction to Sci Fi titled: The Unparalleled Adventure of One Hans Pfall.   Imagine the idea of using a balloon to get to the moon....

Keep on reading folks

Enjoy your Poe, watasch.

Just remember:

If you're reading on a midnight dreary, you may hear a rapping as of someone gently tapping on your chamber door.

Don't let 'em in. Those damn Ravens will shit all over everything...and the feathers... :emot_laughing:
