i do not get the modern obsession with with virginity.

I think it also comes from some men being intimidated by women with any kind of sexual experience. If she's still a virgin, at least she can't complain about bad sex, because she's also never had any good sex for a reference point. More female sex = more past experiences with men to serve as competition = her current partner needs to make an effort (if he doesn't want to be compared poorly to the competition)
