Ronaldo is to be fined $1 million dollars for that interview.  Would be interesting to see if he does come over here to play. Could his ego take the hit?

The more I think about it, the more probable Ronaldo's signing with an MLS club seems to be.

He would be showered with adulation, sell a crap-ton of jerseys, and he would be paid a very decent salary. Shaqiri makes $8.2 million per year playing in Chicago, Chicharito earns $6 million playing for the LA Galaxy, and Iguain makes %5.8 million playing in Miami. Ronaldo would command more than that.

He's probably going scorched-earth right now in the hopes of just having his contract terminated for the January window.

Of course, United could always have him train with the reserve team until his current contract runs out. It would cost more money, but on the other hand, if even You Ain't the Real Fenomeno isn't above getting punished like that, maybe it'll send a strong message to everyone else  ;D

He's on 585k a week. If I was the club I wouldn't terminate his contract. Let him rot.

The MLS is the last stopping place for European and South American star footballers who, at 35, are past their prime in their leagues but can still play, and draw fans, here for a few more years. Plus it is a chance to see these players in person.  I remember seeing Pele and his Brazilian teammate, Carlos Alberto, plus Franz Beckenbauer play for the Cosmos when they came to Chicago.

I just realized Ronaldo is missing an orange tan, a red baseball cap, and some bigly vocabulary  :emot_laughing:

Also, I usually don't read football convos on Twitter, but seeing how some of his fans are acting in response to his Piers Morgan interview, they'd make great MAGA cultists as well

I would have woo'ed this post if only for the delightful phrase "bigly vocabulary."

I didn't see the Piers Morgan interview, but I read a lengthy analysis in The Guardian. And Ronaldo comes off like a whiny little boy.

I'll admit that I've never liked him as a person. I recognize his astonishing greatness as a player, and I deem him one of the greatest players of his generation who belongs on the list of the 15-20 greatest players of all times. But he's a self-centered asshole, and he always has been.

He needs to take a cue from "the other greatest player of his generation," recognize that his skills are sharply declining, and accept reality. I wouldn't be surprised to see him playing in the MLS, perhaps on David Beckham's Miami side, in the near future.

Superb analysis MissB.

And I went to see a NY Red Bulls match that featured Tierry Henry in his late 30s. He was clearly older and slower, but when he received the ball, it was like a switched was flipped and he came back to life.

I guess it would also depend if his ego is bigger thanhis need (greed) for money. He wanted to leaver ManU early, because they failed to qualify for the Champions League. The MLS would be a massive downgrade and probably not worthy in his eyes.

That's a great point.

Still, he would go from a small fish in a big pond to a huge fish in a little pond. I think his ego is big enough to crave that.

I keep hearing that Ronaldo wants to get back into the Champions League to try to take the goal lead away from Messi (120 vs 105 right now)

However, if he continues to find that the interest from top European clubs just isn't there anymore, he may just decide to run third party and... oops, wrong thread  :emot_laughing:

I meant, he may just decide to be a huge fish in a little pond and head to the MLS after all. Getting cut by Man Utd for nothing would certainly help facilitate that move.

So soccer. Don't think I've ever posted here. I know nothing about soccer yet I realize it's become more popular in recent years.

When I was growing up sports was divided into three seasons: football in the fall, basketball in the winter (there were folks up north who played hockey but who cared ). Spring was the doldrums except for spring training
Finally summer and America's game baseball!

Now the seasons are all blurry with one sport overlapping another. I don't know when the soccer season is since it's world wide
Our local soccer team plays in the summer, three months when they don't end up kicking snow
In the southern hemisphere their summer happens during our winter so I guess that's their soccer season.

Now the World Cup is starting and I think it will run into December. Where do they pick to play, the desert. A country that didn't even have a stadium. In the short time since being awarded the World Cup, Qatar has not only built several stadiums but entire towns for the fans.

Today I read that in a last minute decision the Muslim nation is banning beer sales.  :emot_weird:

According to reports fans arriving for the games, the lack of beer, hasn't dampened their spirits (well it is the desert). Throngs are arriving, drapped in the flags of their country ready cheer their lungs out.

GOOOOOAAALL!!!

You forgot hockey.  Dallas stole the (North) Stars. I got to see them in both cities.

LA stole the Lakers.

But Minneapolis stole the Washington Senators (Twins).

Any chance the Premier League will allow Maguire to wear his England jersey during matches?  :emot_laughing:

The decision to award Russia the 2018 WC and Qatar the 2022 one was taken by a completely corrupt administration (FIFA) in a sham bidding process. Qatar was originally scheduled for the summer!  The decision to ban beers sales only relates to stadiums, fan zones can still sell alcohol. I think the alcohol sales are still allowed in the corporate areas of the stadiums, which has infuriated fans.

The stadiums have been built at the cost of many lives of immigrant workers. In the thousands according to some reports.

I’m impressed by the Iran team not joining in with their national anthem.
