I think parity is finally evolving with national teams. Countries once thought of as fielding "weak" teams on the national level are now beating the perennial powers.

USA! USA!  1 -0 over Iran. Goal scored by Pulisic, who unfortunately was injured scoring the goal when he ran into Iran's keeper.

Congratulations to England also. Both teams advance. England will face Senegal and the USA vs Netherlands.

Very good result for the USA, well done. Round of 16 against Netherlands will be tough. Now it's a knockout competition - games decided by penalty kicks when it's still level after extra time. All you need is a little luck.

I was in Amsterdam the night of the 2010 final. Netherlands vs. Spain. The whole city was bedecked in orange, everyone was wearing jerseys. Balloons and streamers. It was an incredibly festive moment. The entire city turned out. We watched the game at a local pub, and you’ve never seen so much screaming and shouting. And then in the final minutes of extra time, Spain kicked a winning goal. You could’ve heard a pin drop. The game ended, everyone quietly acknowledged their friends, shook hands, or hugged, and filed out onto the streets to quietly walk home. You gotta hand it to the Dutch. Impeccably well behaved individuals. In England, they would’ve been turning cars over and setting things on fire.

I assume you have never been on a skiing holiday with the Dutch recently then. They go absolutely crazy during apres ski.  I did a lot of business in Holland and they were always very serious and well behaved. The first time I encountered them in the Alps I said to the skiing instructor that I had never seem them like this before, he replied "you've never been on holiday with them"  ;D

I think England's calmed down a bit since the real hooligan days. I recommend a film called The Football Factory to see English hooliganism at it's worst in the 70s & 80s.

I remember watching the 1990 World Cup semi final between England and Germany (West Germany for the last time) in our local pub in London. When England lost we thought "oops!" and quietly left - lucky our flat was nearby. Could hear the anger kicking off in the streets for hours afterwards.

Weren't countries beginning to ban or deny British fans into matches where England played in other countries?  Might have sobered up the fans enough to curtail their hooliganism.

There was the Heysel disaster in 1985. It was the Champions League final (back then still European Cup) between Liverpool and Juventus in Brussels. The Liverpool fans breached a fence and started attacking the Juventus fans. The Juventus fans tried to get away and backed up against a wall, which eventually collapsed. Almost 40 fans were killed, and English clubs were banned from European competitions for five years.

Woooo!!!! Australia beat Denmark to go through to last 16.

Play Argentina on Sunday, the winner to play the winner of Netherlands v USA in the quarter final.

Great to see Australia doing so well. I wasn't expecting that. Then again, I always wasn't expecting Tunisia to beat France, or for a lot of those other results  ;D

I'm guessing it will be Argentina versus the Netherlands eventually, but anything can happen apparently ;)

That's what you'd expect, but as Greavesy said when the unexpected happened in football, it's a funny old game.

Initially Liverpool were banned for life; but the decision was rescinded on appeal.

Belgium was knocked out after failing to beat Croatia. In the second half, Belgium couldn't buy a goal.

Bad news for everyone, Japan's gonna win it  :o ;D

Edit: I meant bad news for the favorites. I wouldn't mind a first-time winner :)

I think this is called fantasy football, or snowball's chance in hell, or whatever "impossibility" metaphor you can think of  ;D

List of countries that have won the world cup: Brazil, Italy, Germany, Argentina, France, Uruguay, England, Spain

That's it. Japan? Does not compute.

How a team performs in the initial group stage is no indication of how they perform in later rounds.

Of course Japan has done really well to beat top teams (the ball was really over the end line for that 2nd goal against Spain, though...), but if they were to win the final, I'd strip naked and run around Kristen's Board.

It was somewhat tongue in cheek after their "giant slaying" feats of beating both Germany and Spain, but also before I knew about the controversy surrounding the second goal.  ;D

Of course, I still wouldn't mind a first-time winner, and there have been some surprising results so far. For example, I never, ever would've expected Saudi Arabia to win against Argentina. But on a more serious note, it would definitely take a miraculous amount of miracles for someone other than Argentina/Brazil and France/Spain/(maybe England) to make it to the final, nevermind win it all

USA looking good against the Netherlands.

Edit: Oops, spoke to soon.

Sad to hear that Pele is under palliative care.

The US defense is not good today. I like their attack mode but it makes them susceptible to long passes by the Netherlands.  2 - 0 Netherlands at the half.

I heard Pele was pretty sick but did not know he was in palliative care. Sad.
