There was a time that 7-11 stores were closing like crazy around us. The last 15 years they have been opening like crazy. There are more 7-11's in my town now than there are McDonalds.
In the late 80’s, the Thompsons took the company (Southland Corp.) private by buying back outstanding shares. They took on over $5 Billion in debt to do this, and the 90’s were marked with store closings and sell offs as they struggled to stay afloat. They finally went through a Chapter 11 and a Japanese merger. The company is still headquartered in Dallas, but no longer exclusively under Thompson family control.
When 7‑Eleven started selling Slurpee drinks they were called Icees. The #1 market in the world for Slurpee sales is Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, followed by
the greater Detroit, Michigan, area.
