In 1961, kids didn't just have to worry about being naughty or nice.  The threat of nuclear war hung over our heads back then.  One young lady heard her parents talking about a proposed test blast by the Soviets in the North Pole.

Her fear was that Santa could be killed!  She wrote to President Kennedy asking him to stop the bombing.  He wrote back offering his assurances that Mr. Klaus would be safe. 

The Ruskies still dropped what was then and still is the largest explosion ever.
No wonder people were building bomb shelters and watching the skies for mushroom shaped clouds.
