Best wishes for a Happy 4th of July. Amid all the picnics, splashing at the beach or just laying around the backyard...take some time to remember how hard our forefathers fought for our freedom. A little sober reflection won't take away from  your fun.

Have a happy and safe holiday fellow KBers.

You would have thought yesterday was the 4th of July with all the fireworks.  It was just a glimpse of what tonight will be like.

And to my neighbor that set off what sounded like a stick of dynamite at 3am.  Really?

Happy 4th everybody.

Happy 4th all  :emot_kiss:

We've got storms on the way, so a lot of shows did theirs yesterday around here. I just stayed home with my head in headphones listening to music.

Gotta love celebrating 'Murica by setting off something created in china and made in Japan  :emot_laughing:

Dude there's water between me and those wankers :D
Though actually, in all fairness, they were the only ones to come here and actually leave every time.   Otherwise, Belgium's the gang-bang cum dump of Europe.  Everyone who's someone in our part of the world has fucked us over at least once in the past 2 millennia.  By the time you kicked out the Brits, we were Austrians.
Took us another 40 years to kick out the Dutch, of all people and have our own little victory.
So hey, celebrate yours. I salute you.
Ours is July 21st.  Though I often get nostalgic and celebrate july 14th too.  Maybe I have a thing for parading legionnaires or something.   :emot_dunno:

Independence Day. A Fourth of July tradition.

That sounds pretty much like the history of Europe. Or the world, for that matter.

It might be quicker and easier to compile a list of nations that haven't been invaded or annexed at one time or another.

You are just a thought that someone, somewhere, somehow feels you should be here.

I had to explain to my kids that the 1812 Overture has nothing to do with the War of 1812 a/k/a British Invasion 2.0. That was the year that Russia turned back Napoleon‘s army from the gates of Moscow. Czar Alexander 1 commissioned the Christ the Savior cathedral that same year, in celebration. It would not be completed until 1880. And Tchaikovsky was commissioned to create a musical piece for its dedication. And he did so, complete with cannon accents. Fast forward almost 100 years, and Arthur Fiedler decided to perform the piece with the Boston Symphony on the Fourth of July. And it’s a wonderful piece, and the cannons are dramatic, and now everyone plays it on the Fourth of July. But it has absolutely nothing to do with America. History. Learn it.

There is a snippet of France's National Anthem there also along with some Russian folk songs.  If I remember correctly, Tchaikovsky hated it, calling it loud and obnoxious.  It's been a about 27 years since I learned that, so I could be mistaken.

If you listen closely in the intro, you can actually hear the themes of the French national anthem (the Marseillaise) as well as some traditional Russian folk songs and hymns.  In addition, Tchaikovsky had cannons fired and church bells rung during the performance, to recreate the battle and its aftermath. And he did say it was loud and obnoxious. I love it. Coincidence?
