If you should happen to live within this green swath, there’s a *very slight* chance of observing the Aurora Borealis tonight

We looked last night.  Nothing.  Will be out again tonight.

My favorite tiny planet when I was a kid
Pluto

The thing I found so wonderful was that when we got a good look at it, we found a heart on it!

It must be proof that God loves us especially.

Either that, or proof that the cake is a lie.

Multiple exposure of the Moon over a 28 day period.

Rare Christmas Star set to light sky

On December 21st, the winter solstice, two planets will appear nearly aligned in a very rare event. It is called a conjunction and happens every 20 years when Jupiter and Saturn align side by side but not close. What is special this year is the two planets will appear right next to each other, something that happens every 400 years.

Does anyone else find the shape of this curve highly aesthetically pleasing? As in arousing? It's such a lovely natural shape that we never get to see with our limited senses.

Would that we could float in the cosmos, speed up time, and increase our sensitivity to tidal forces so that we could feel the sweep of the moons and planets in their orbits touch us, from the jiggling rumble of the moon to the overwhelming pressing force of Jupiter as it passes, all the planets and moons together massaging us into bliss.

So far my 2020 curse has not let up.  Every supermoon including the two in October... clouds.  Aurora Borealis... clouds.  Meteor shower... clouds.

I have no idea what I did to miss out on all of these.  The super moons hurt the most though

I can commiserate my dear, happens to me too every time I try and see such astronomical things.  I should have at least tried last night, but there were some clouds at dusk.  I was going to look anyway, but was working on dinner plus there had been some drama yesterday (went with several family to see some estranged nephews/niece, it ended badly and later had their aunt sobbing on my chest).

Tonight it says clouds, but I’ll try and look.  Always clouds, a few years ago I hiked a portion of the Appalachian Trial to the top of a mountain at midnight to see a meteor shower, just to see clouds.

Too low in the sky for me I'm afraid.  Surrounding buildings obstruct the view, not to mention their horrendous light pollution.

Dingy gloomy dull cloudy gray drab overcast yuckily dismal sky is the best way to describe current conditions over SE Michigan right now.   I'm not going to see it.

4 minutes 30 seconds later (update):  It's sleeting now.  FML

Same here in Minne-snowda. Cloudy with chance of snow showers. Weather easy to predict. If there's a major astronomical event, we'll have cloudy skies.

I realised that a local viewpoint a couple of miles from home would give me some relief from the light pollution and also 100 feet of elevation. At the fourth attempt I had a relative cloud free sky (on two attempts the only clouds in the sky were right in front of the conjunction) and frankly was a bit disappointed. The separation was greater than I had imagined and Saturn could only just be seen with the naked eye, however the rings could just about be distinguished with binoculars.

I spoke to someone who had taken a picture with his telescope similar to the one below and he said the closeness and brightness was overhyped in the media.

I always get pissed when the media turns an interesting astronomical occurrence into “STAR OF BETHLEHEM APPEARS IN SKY!  A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE!!!”  I’m pretty sure that Jupiter and Saturn do not observe Christmas, and it is hardly miraculous.

Then all the religious nutties on social media start embellishing things even more... It’s just painful to watch.
