Lead poisoning and being hit by cars are taking a toll on Eagles. They will eat carrion and as roads, cause roadkill, Eagles end up getting hit as they feed. Their large size makes take off slower. A speeding car will hit them before the Eagle can get out of the way.
Audubon, famous for his avian artwork, hated Bald Eagles, as they were carrion eaters. He did claim to discover a new Eagle that he called the Audubon Eagle. Yeah, it was a juvenile Bald Eagle. Audubon didn't realize they don't get the white head, black feathers and yellow beak and feet until 5-7 years old.
