The Minnesota DNR has had their Eagle cam up and running for a few weeks. The two eagle parents have been taking turns keeping their three eggs warm. I was watching for awhile this morning when Momma? rose up and there was a fluffy yellow Eaglet. The other two eggs may hatch soon.

Here's the link if you want to tune in and watch Eagles without going outside.

That is one mean looking eagle sitting in the nest.

Yep you don't wanna mess with an Eagle. An Eagle with chicks...you die.

This guy tried to take an Eaglet away from Mom and Dad. Almost died. I'm sure it took a while to dry out before it could fly again.

This is incredible!

If you click on the red timeline to go back to 7:59am (today, Friday 3/20) you can see the baby eagles getting fed. The time is shown in the lower left hand corner.

Woo for you msslave.

Update: There's another feeding between 5:44pm and 5:49pm and the baby eagles are much more visible in this one. This is so cool.

The three eggs hatched on March 15, 17 and 19 so the first eaglet is 2 weeks old today.

All three are still quite fuzzy, much like a baby chick, and since they seem to be a little more active, they are being fed more often.

Still another 8-10 weeks before they will be old enough to fledge (fly from the nest).

Don't ask how many hours I've had this camera feed on my screen. Damn, I miss baseball.  ^-^

The nest is getting a little crowded, especially when both parents are there.

The three eaglets are now 5 weeks old and still have another 3 to 5 weeks before they're old enough to leave the nest.

On the way to a doctor’s appointment and only a few miles from my house I spotted 3 birds ahead at a road kill.  Two were crows watching a larger bird feed.  I figured it was a vulture and didn’t slow down at first, but then I saw a glimpse of white when it stretched its feathers to move as I approached.  Damned if it wasn’t a bald eagle, by far the closest I ever saw one to my house.  Usually have to travel over an hour for a very slim chance to see one.

You weren't going to slow for a vulture! They're very important birds. Ugly yes, but nature's cleaning crew. They not only clean up dead animals, they can nuterlize all disease dead animals can carry.  Even Ebola! One of nature's most useful birds.

I usually see two or three Turkey vultures sitting by the road waiting for some roadkill when I drive to our local Sam's Club. Ugly is putting it mildly.

Oh I wouldn’t have hit a vulture intentionally, but let’s say a bald eagle inspired a bit more care in my driving.  He or she winged into a nearby tree as I approached.  I checked the same spot on the way back and just a dead opossum in the road.

Lead poisoning and being hit by cars are taking a toll on Eagles.  They will eat carrion and as roads, cause roadkill, Eagles end up getting hit as they feed. Their large size makes take off slower. A speeding car will hit them before the Eagle can get out of the way.

Audubon, famous for his avian artwork, hated Bald Eagles, as they were carrion eaters. He did claim to discover a new Eagle that he called the Audubon Eagle. Yeah, it was a juvenile Bald Eagle. Audubon didn't realize they don't get the white head, black feathers and yellow beak and feet until 5-7 years old.
