attempt to erase history

How exactly is removal of a statue glorifying a general from the Civil War erasing history? I mean if we are talking about removal from all text-books, teaching methods, and curriculum, then sure, but a statue?

Is that how people think kids learn history these days?

To an extent, yes.  Whilst a statue does not necessarily teach facts, it teaches an attitude. Teachers in an area around a statue will unconsciously teach that attitude because they always try and make a topic relevant - the first lesson about a particular part of history may well start "Now, class, you all know that statue outside city hall..."

It's a trite comparison, but think of all the Simpsons episodes featuring the statue of the town's founder, and all the misconceptions about the town's history, based solely on the statue in the town square.

Also, there is simply too much history to teach in the time available in schools. If the particular period linked to a statue is not covered in school, then that statue is the only source of information most kids will access, and the only message a statue normally sends is we build a statue, so he's a good guy.

So, yes, removing the statue is erasing history.

As you say, a significant part of that history is obscene and should not be celebrated, but it should also not be forgotten.  I propose a compromise;

Leave the statues in place, but change their presentation - add a new plaque with more information, place a new statue alongside that modifies the message, but do not hide the statue away.

Rommel was a great General, but you don't see his statue anywhere in Germany.  That is because he fought for Hitler.  This does not erase history, nor does it mean he wasn't a great General.  It just means he is not revered or considered a good role model.

Rommel was a very popular General in Germany during the war.
He was also not in the Nazi Party.
He is the only General (German) of WW2 that has a museum in his honor.
He is still highly regarded in Germany and his son is also.

Love,
Liz

My dad says there are lots of local memorials for GermN war dead in Germany. They memorialize the men, not the Nazi party, not the reason they died, but the men themselves. Most are still buried where they fell, in Russia.

They have no statues on them, only names.

There are three kinds of people in the world. Those who can count, and those who can't.

Let us make a list, here, of Statuary to be removed from view, due to the beliefs espoused, and actions taken by the individuals or groups depicted.

We can begin by removing a bunch from the U.S. Capitol, Statuary Hall, with racist vote records and writings, and beliefs, who have been recognized by their colleagues, including todays elected Congress and Senate officials.

Let us begin to justify, and rename, the Senate and House Office Buildings and other locations, Airports, Train Stations, Post Offices and the like which may be named after dead politicians with racism involved in any way with their past, their votes, their speeches, their campaigns.

We need a budget, of course, so let us charge the Political Party for all the costs, including the environmental studies about where such edifices could go, and the removal costs for the statuary and the base(s), and the Commission to design and replace such Statuary with a laudable figure from the geographical area, who is revered by all.

Is that what we all want?  Lets start the list here...

Wow! Are there really that many statues of General Lee and Jefferson Davis around? And stuff named after them? I doubt it.

Please don't pretend this is about more than the removal of memorials of Confederate traitors, because it's not.

P.P.S.  Threatening to burn someone's home is also not protected speech.

Of course joan1984 would never do such a thing.

Sounds like the US Senate... are there any Democrat black Senators at all in the current U.S. Senate? Just cannot remember...

All Confederate, and likely all Slave Owner Statues in the Capitol are of of elected Democrats, the Statuary approved by elected Democrats.

Good place to begin, pull them all down... lets make a weekend of it...
Next would be West Virginia.... lots of Statuary and Highway names ripe for change there...

The U.S. Capitol has at least three times as many statues of Confederate figures as it does of black people

Sure, I'll go first.

Change Confederate statues and memorials celebrating the secession, its ideology, or purpose into Civil War Memorials that memorialize how our country still stands after such a tragic occurrence.

I propose making them, where possible, public works projects that create community areas like parks, circles, and squares.

Your turn, don't let your hate choke you though.

I love your passion... researching your ideas may prove helpful.   BLM is about Marxism, the leaders of BLM, Inc. flat out admit it.  What you think is true and what is true are the same.

Moreover, believing some speech is illegal because it is "hate speech, " is dangerous.   Who gets to decide what is hate speech?
