And he will be the starting pitcher for the Astros in Game 1.  He has a 1.75 ERA.

Texas, so yes, go Astros.

My proximity support meter leads me to the Astros.

But it was the scene of a very naive (on my part) sexual encounter.

I remember sitting in Enron Stadium, as it was then called. Our corporation produced the first plastic beer bottles and we were testing them out.  8)

Who would have thought the Astros would give up a 5 run lead and lose?

An exciting game, I thought, especially when the Astros could have nicked it in the 10th.  Well done Phillies.

Another naive question - Tucker struck out but still ran for first base (also in the 10th I believe), was this because the Phillies catcher dropped the ball?

And as great as my Justin Verlander is, his resume has yet to list a World Series win as pitcher, yet.

The SF Giants beat him up in the first inning the last time the Tigers were in the Workd Series.  And he hasn't gotten a win in Houston.

Maybe game 5 he will.  Or will he pitch in game 4?

Yes. exactly.  Only on a third strike.  I always thought that rule was silly.

Heartbreaker. First time in Astro’s history they have lost a playoff game after leading by five (29-1).

My brother was at the game. He thought Pressly’s walkout song was cool.

I have seen more baseball this year than ever before.  Always impressed by how the base umpires can judge an out.  And by the fact that batters hardly ever question the umpire about contentious pitches.  If only European football was like that.

MLB is essentially a dictatorship. It has been decreed that players and managers are not allowed to argue balls and strikes. Doing so will result in immediate ejection from the game. Most umpires will allow a single comment, but any more than that, or any display that shows them up (such as spreading your arms in disbelief) and they run the player (or manager) out of the game.

I saw a game where the batter didn't say a word, just used his bat to draw a line in the dirt of the batter's box, indicating how far off the plate the pitch was. He was ejected. The batter in that case was right, the ball was nowhere near being over the plate, but that was the end of his day and his replacement started with one strike on him.

They are entertaining the idea of using a computer/radar device to call balls and strikes. The technology exists as we've all seen on the strike zone boxes that show where a pitch was on televised games. It's being tested in some of the minor leagues and it remains to be seen whether it will be approved by both MLB and the Player's Union.

How controlling is MLB? They require every umpire to wear black underwear to prevent any obvious wardrobe malfunctions.

Black underwear...how deeply have you investigated this Purple? Maybe if more people knew about this there would be a drive to finally get women umpires in the Majors. There's a few in the Minor leagues, but still none in the big time. Baseball is not only controlling but way behind the times. So yes. MLB lets get a woman behind the plate and in black underwear. ;D

Thanks for the info PS.  My underwear would soon get soiled standing that close to 90-100 mph balls.

Just seen game 5.  So close for the Phillies or for the Astros to extend the lead.

They should have been further up my proximity support table as I overlooked my time in Pennsylvania. They went right to the top when I heard the commentator say they are the oldest continuous same-name, same-city franchise in all of American professional sports (see earlier posts about the howls of anguish a franchise system would produce in Europe).  Are there any others?

What's ironic about that is the American League team in Philadelphia was one of the few teams that kept its name as it migrated from city to city.

The Philadelphia Athletics became the Kansas City Athletics, which then became the Oakland Athletics. For years now, there have been rumors that the team now wants out of Oakland because of the poor facilities they play in.

I found a very informative history of the team locations and names that would hold the interest of even a moderate baseball fan. Check out the history of the Dodgers and the Braves.

For example, the Baltimore Orioles were once the Milwaukee Brewers for a single season (1901). The team then moved to St. Louis (as the Browns) for fifty years before landing in Baltimore, where the team now called the Orioles has been since 1954.

I knew that the Atlanta Braves are the oldest sports franchise in America, founded in 1871, as the Boston Red Stockings.

Atlanta Braves (1966–present)
Milwaukee Braves (1953–1965)
Boston Braves (1941–1952)
Boston Bees (1936–1940)
Boston Braves (1912–1935)
Boston Rustlers (1911)
Boston Doves (1907–1910)
Boston Beaneaters (1883–1906)
Boston Red Caps (1876–1882)
Boston Red Stockings (1871–1875)

I saw a headline this morning that I thought was very cool. Game 3 in Philadelphia the crowd noise after a couple of home runs registered on the Richter scale.

https://sports.yahoo.com/world-series-2022-dinger-quake-124152090.html

"As the Phillies unleashed a barrage of home runs on Astros starter Lance McCullers last night at Citizens Bank Park, and the capacity crowd, already at full throat from the first pitch, reached another level.

Did you feel that?

Take a bow, Phillies fans. Your frenzy registered on the Richter scale, literally

According to the Penn State University Brandywine seismograph station, the crowd at CBP was so loud that its fervor registered as seismic activity, in the aftermath of Kyle Schwarber’s home run in the five inning, the last of the five homers hit by the Phillies on the night, tying a World Series record."
