I have seen more baseball this year than ever before. Always impressed by how the base umpires can judge an out. And by the fact that batters hardly ever question the umpire about contentious pitches. If only European football was like that.
MLB is essentially a dictatorship. It has been decreed that players and managers are not allowed to argue balls and strikes. Doing so will result in immediate ejection from the game. Most umpires will allow a single comment, but any more than that, or any display that shows them up (such as spreading your arms in disbelief) and they run the player (or manager) out of the game.
I saw a game where the batter didn't say a word, just used his bat to draw a line in the dirt of the batter's box, indicating how far off the plate the pitch was. He was ejected. The batter in that case was right, the ball was nowhere near being over the plate, but that was the end of his day and his replacement started with one strike on him.
They are entertaining the idea of using a computer/radar device to call balls and strikes. The technology exists as we've all seen on the strike zone boxes that show where a pitch was on televised games. It's being tested in some of the minor leagues and it remains to be seen whether it will be approved by both MLB and the Player's Union.
How controlling is MLB? They require every umpire to wear black underwear to prevent any obvious wardrobe malfunctions.
