I'm listening to "The Death of J. B. Lenoir" on John Mayalls' Crusade album (1967).

Quote

"The Blues has lost a king"

John Mayall wrote and recorded two songs after J. B. Lenoir died tragically in a car accident when he was 38 : "The death of J. B. Lenoir" and ""I'm Gonna Fight for You, J. B."

If you watch and listen to "John Mayall - I'm Gonna Fight For You J.B. (1970)" on YouTube, you'll see three interesting things. First, the "lead guitarist" is playing a nylon string classical guitar. Second, the parts what would be traditionally be played on harmonica are being played by a sax player (Howlin Wolf did this as well). And third, in both songs, Mayall mispronounces Lenoir's last name.

"Sometimes the best things in life are a hot girl and a cold beer."

I'm enjoying a DVD of Terry and the Pirates performing live in 1983 on the German Rockpalast TV show. The lineup was Terry Dolan (vocals, guitar), John Cipollina (guitar), David Hayes (bass), Nicky Hopkins (piano), and Greg Elmore (drums).

The audio and video are superb. I'd never seen close-up shots of Cipollina's guitar technique, so it came as a surprise to see that he used over-the-finger picks on thumb and forefinger. The video also highlighted his distinctive tremolo-arm vibrato.

You go to a rock concert and the first song, usually, sets the tone for the rest of the concert. If that song is a banger, and you came to be completely blown away, then you are in the right place.

AKB48 is the largest all girl pop idol group in the world (you only see about 20 of the 153 girls then in the group in this video). They own the clubs that they entertain in in Japan and in half a dozen asian countries. During the summer they will go on a stadium tour and they will fill stadiums.

This video is from 2009, when AKB48 was big, but not yet HUGE.

And this video is from 2015, when the group was HUGE and paid a surprise visit to a high school.  Skip to 2:27 for the payoff (if you're wondering about the crown the one girl is wearing, it's not an ornament, she is the "General Manager"-in charge of all the dancers, makes schedules, deals with issues, etc.).

I've never heard of him -- thanks for the recommendation!

I just spent a while over on YouTube listening to him. I especially liked this one:

When I was younger (and slimmer) I could listen to music on the radio while working on assignments. Not any more. I can focus on the music, or focus on the work, but not on both. After thirty minutes of typing I have no recollection of what I've been hearing.

Which is why I'm not listening to anything as I type this message.

Before settling down to work this morning, I listened to some classic oldies by The Flamin' Groovies.

At this moment I have a nasty tension headache and have medicated for it. In a few minutes, when I'm feeling more human, I think I'll listen to some Celtic music by Finbar and Eddie Furey or something soothing by Sandy Denny. I may even revisit Love's Forever Changes album. A magic carpet ride from Ireland to England to Los Angeles.

Educating yourself, presumably through podcasts, is a great behavior, wish I had it. In my old age, I need a mix of things. For instance, I get my news from 12 different sources. I do need music through the day. So, there is news + music + fluff that gets me through the day.

I'm listening to Baby Grandmothers, a Swedish psychedelic group from 1967-8. The A and B sides of a 7" single that was released only in Finland, three live tracks recorded at the Live Klubb Filips in Stockholm, and two live tracks recorded in Finland where, apparently, they were more popular than in Sweden.

Makes you wonder how many other gems are hidden in dark unfathomed Scandinavian caves.

From Sweden, there is Blue Swede (truly awesome in the 1970's), Europe (awesome in the 1980's), and then there is ABBA. Speaking of Europe, I was in a RUSH tribute band in college, but for our first gig, before we discovered our sound, The Final Countdown was the very first song we ever played.

Here's a low-res video of a song they did for a Japanese TV commercial. Check out the '50s hairstyles.

Beethoven's 7th Symphony. The melancholy theme from the second movement featured in a movie I was watching, so I decided to give the symphony another listen. The one I have is by the Berliner Philharmoniker with Herbert von Karajan.
