Today is NATIONAL HOUSEWIFE DAY FN1, PUBLIC TV’s BIRTHDAY FN2, and S.O.S. DAY FN3. Cuz Dom says it’s NATIONAL SANDWICH DAY FN4 or GIORNATA NAZIONALE IL PANINO.

*1789: 1st F. Supp: the 1st U.S. District Court established by the Constitution opened in New York City or E.D.N.Y.;

*1868: U.S. Grant: Ulysses S. Grant the won Presidential election defeating Horatio Seymour;

*1899: 25 Round TKO: Jim Jeffries beat Sailor Tom Sharkey to retain the world's heavyweight title after referee George Siler stopped the fight in the 25th round at the Greater New York Athletic Club at 180 Central Park South in Manhattan;

*1900: 1st Auto Show: the 1st major US auto show maker show opened in NYC's Madison Square Garden under the auspices of the Automobile Club of America;

*1936: FDR’s 2nd Win: President Franklin D. Roosevelt was re-elected in a landslide over Republican Alfred "Alf" Landon;

*1954: 1st GODZILLA: Toho Co. released the 1st of its 29 films featuring the Japanese monster movie "Godzilla"; FN5

*2013: St. Nick: Eagles QB Nick Foles tied an NFL record with 7 TD passes in 49-20 victory over the Oakland Raiders.

*2014: The Freedom Tower: NYC's 104-story One World Trade Center officially opened 13 years after the 9/11 Attacks.

FN1: “STAY AT HOME MOMS”:  Housewife Day aka "Retro Housewife Day” honors the wonderful, caring wives who build & enrich our strong family environments, and help instill family values and good character. “Housewife” is an old term that hails back to days when one income could support the family. It was also a time when women did not have equal rights. While those days are long gone, women’s views on working or staying at home, fall on both sides of the fence. Deciding to be a "housewife", or “stay-at-home-mom,” is still preferred by many. Cuz Dom and I throw kisses and salutes to our moms and all mothers staying at home or not.

FN2: APRIL 7: Technically speaking (for all my friends who check my holidays) “Public Television Day is celebrated April 7, because on that date in 1927, the company AT&T transmitted the first successful long-distance public broadcast of TV. But, PBS was established Nov 3, 1969, by Hartford N. Gunn Jr. (president of WGBH), John Macy (president of CPB), James Day (last president of National Educational TV) & Kenneth A. Christiansen (chair of department of broadcasting at Univ of Florida).

FN3: MORSE CODE: On Nov 3, 1906, an international conference approved S.O.S. as the radio telegraph distress call for ships at sea; with just 3 short dots . . . 3 long dashes _ _ _  and another 3 short dots . . ., S.O.S. was designed to grab attention. But with multiple distress calls already in use, it took years for S.O.S. to become  THE standard, helped along by the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. In Morse Code, “SOS” is a signal sequence of three dits, three dats, and another three dits spelling out the letters “S-O-S”. The expression “Save Our Ship” was probably coined by sailors to signal for help from a vessel in distress.

FN4: MONTAGU’S MEAL: Today celebrates of one of America’s favorite foods. No coincidence that Nov 3 is also birthday of John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich. This 18th century English noble wanted to eat his meal with one hand during a 24-hour gambling event, so he instructed his servants to serve him his lunchmeat between two slices of bread. To commemorate the birth of the world's first sandwich-maker, November 3 is now National Sandwich Day.

FN5: Gojira (ゴジラ): is the Godzilla character's name in Japan. It is a portmanteau of gorilla and kujira, the Japanese word for whale. The movie studio's foreign sales department anglicized the name to Godzilla when they sold it to American distributors.

FN1: GUNPOWDER PLOT: Guy Fawkes Day, aka GUNPOWDER PLOT DAY celebrates the failure of the  Gunpowder Plot to blow up Parliament in 1605. Today is celebrated with bonfires, fireworks and burning of effigies. (UK, New Zealand & the Canadian province of Newfoundland & Labrador).

FN2: OTHER BONFIRES: Bonfire Night is the name given to various annual celebrations characterized by bonfires & fireworks. This event celebrates different traditions on different dates, depending on the country. Some of the most popular examples include (A) today – Guy Fawkes Night (5Nov) in Great Britain and some Commonwealth countries; (B) Northern Ireland's 11th Night (11 July); (C) 23 June in Republic of Ireland, (D) 5 Nov in Newfoundland, (E) June 23 is oft called "St John's Eve," (F) similar bonfire traditions survive in parts of Scandinavia called “Walpurgis Night,” an abbreviation of St Walpurgis Night, aka St Walpurga's Eve, is the eve of the Christian feast day of St Walpurga, an 8th-century abbess in Francia, and is celebrated on the night of 30 April and the day of 1 June. Several other cultures also include night celebrations with bonfires and/or fireworks.
