Good afternoon,

Just wanted to check on some info for posting. While I'm still working on the story, I haven't decided yet if I will post chapters as done or wait until complete and then post a chapter a week or something. But it made me wonder, is there a character/word limit to each post? And when I do start posting, should I reply (based on the number of chapters) to reserve the number of spots after the 1st chapter so the story doesn't get broken up if anyone comments and is that allowed?

Hope everyone is having a good weekend.

speaking for myself. keep it in chapters, I won't read a long story all at one sitting.

one of the originals

Oh I would definitely keep each chapter for a separate post. I'm just trying to figure out how to post on this site. And I would never post it all at one time, like a Netflix binge. 1 chapter a week would probably be the fastest rate.

I have forgotten the exact size limit per post but I think it is 64kb but some symbols are much larger, and new lines may be larger so if you keep each part down to less than 50kb ish maybe it will fit?

Also it depends on how you want to do it, you could make a link at the end of each post to the next one, I did that for a story of mine that is not around here anymore, or you can make the first post an index with links to each part/chapter of your story, or you can reserve a bunch of posts in a thread first, it is mostly up to you, also if you do make links try to do it to the https:// site, that way everyone will stay logged in when they click the links, and be able to comment after reading.

Also please read the rules for what stories can be posted and properly add tags to the title of your thread.

So the character limit per post looks to be 64,799.  They just chop it off after that, without any kind of warning.

I’ve never tested it. The control panel says “no limit” but a member tested and reported the above.

If you think it's worth removing the limit, ask your IT guy to change the MySQL database TEXT type from "TEXT" to "MEDIUMTEXT" (16MB) or even "LONGTEXT" (4GB)

More details can be found on the Stack Overflow site at:

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/13932750/tinytext-text-mediumtext-and-longtext-maximum-storage-sizes

I ran into this problem when I attempted to upload a paper to a CMS and discovered, a little too late, that it had been truncated. I changed the TEXT type and all was well.  :)

Thank you both!

Vela Nanashi, I have read the rules, but I will reread them when I get ready to post. At this time I can't see there being any of the nay-nay stuff in it. Since you said I can reserve posts, that's what I'll do. And when I change one of the reserved spots to the actual chapter for the story, I'll add a reply to let everyone know that, using the https:// suggestion unless people just want to scroll back.

Pornhubby, I'll have to check the character count then, chapter 1 will fit that count, chapter 2 won't. Not quite done with it and it is already over 83k characters counting spaces.

Yarshi, that is good, also yeah I often need to find split points in my texts when I post, that are not on clean chapter switching positions :) I am sure you will figure it out :)

We’ve only been this way for 17 years, and have never had a problem.

Anyone posting Ulysses here is going to be very disappointed, as our readership consists primarily of people looking for a 5-minute masturbatory fantasy read. Once you get past three chapters or so, the number of readers drops to zero.

Numerous authors have complained about this through the years. (YOU WILL READ MY SMUT!) but that is just the nature of the business.

Well I do get reads/views on long story threads, but rarely comments, it is the nature of the beast. One should write for oneself and anything else is just a bonus.

Just as an FYI on this topic, my first chapter had 90,001 characters, 72,693 not counting spaces and the site had no issue with it.
