It is the fall equinox. According to scientists, it is when the zenith ray of the sun is at the equator. The summer equinox is June 22nd, the longest day of the year for those of us in the northern hemisphere. I have seasonal effect disorder, so the summer is a miserable time for me as all the sunlight plays hell with my sleep.

equinox is when length of day and night are essentially equal.  There's one in the spring and one in the fall.
The longest day in the summer and the longest night in the winter are not equinoxes (by definition)
those are solstices.

Today there are 12 hours of sunlight and 12 hours of nighttime.  In both the northern and the southern hemisphere.  Fall begins today in the north, and spring begins today in the south.

The word "equinox" derives from the Latin words meaning "equal night."

I'm always conscious of the shortening and lengthening days because when I go for a morning run, I leave my home around 6:15 am. As the summer and fall progress, it gets lighter later. For example, when I went out this morning, it was still dark, and it didn't start getting lighter until I was almost done with my run.

I have a large double window in my bedroom with Venețian blinds. I use the light as an alarm clock of sorts. I can usually guess the approximate time. Today I was thrown off. It was still rather dark in my room, and the phone said 6:45 am, so fall here we come.

My favourite 'equi-' word is 'equanimity'. Something I'd like to possess. 'Equilibrium' comes a close second.

At the bottom of my list is 'equiponderance'. Another thing I'd like to possess.

More fun with Latin roots!

Equanimity derives from the Latin words meaning "equal minds." Equilibrium means  "equally balance."

For a Latin lesson within a Latin lesson, the Latin word "libra," which means balance, is the source of the 7th Zodiac sign, which is typically depicted as a picture of a scale. It's also the reason why we write the abbreviation for "pound" as "lb."

The words "North and Hillard" still make me groan. Their "Latin Prose Composition for the Middle Forms of Schools" was cruel and unusual punishment.

No, thank you, Staci, for responding.

I'm still browsing the oldest messages on this board, trying to get some idea of the guidelines laid down by the original administrators.

I'm also trying to figure out ways of filtering out content so that it doesn't appear on "Recent Forum Posts", "Recent Messages", and "Unread Messages".

There's a lot of stuff I'd prefer to skip: the long erotic stories, the messages in eyesore colors, the messages with inflated signatures, and topics in which I have no interest.

No doubt there's already been discussion of this in past topics. I'll keep looking.

Returning to the current topic, I have a relative who was born on the Fall Equinox. No problem remembering her birthday.

Depending where you live, remembering her birthday might be harder than you think.

That's because the fall equinox (or autumnal equinox) can occur anywhere between September 21-24. In the northern hemisphere and the eastern time zone, this year the fall equinox occurred on September 22. Last year it happened on September 23.

I'm aware of the moveable nature of the equinox and make the necessary adjustment, as do other members of my family. That said, these days we just sync our recurring birthday calendars.

More of a problem are the cusp dates of zodiac signs, which can drift from one sign to another depending on day and time of birth. I'm not into astrology, but Fall Equinox relative is, and insists that sometimes she's a Virgo, and sometimes a Libra.
