Sorry my friend. I was not trying to be a dick with it. Its just I had years of training drilled into me being a meat brick and all. My mom told me, my dad, his dad, and even before he passed, my great grandfather told me to always be presentable.

I remember the time my father picked me up at the airport from college. I was wearing khaki slacks, a polo shirt, and a blue blazer. He informed me that if I wasn’t wearing a coat and tie on the airplane, not to call him. “Take a taxi next time, if you plan to dress so casually.”

My son is an Eagle Scout, Legislative intern, Phi Beta Kappa, and cum laude honors graduate. He knows how to present.

I think my comment was more of a lament that we are seeing, things become progressively more casual, and informal, over time. I think the pandemic, and working at home in your pajamas, has only accelerated this trend. Wearing t-shirts and baseball caps, while yelling at the President during the SOTA is symptomatic of a general lack of decorum. I worry for a future I will not live to see.

So sorry I was triggered.

I am totally with you on that.

When I started work ,back in the 70's , the company had a strict compulsory dress code for both men and women.

Fast forward to today .
We have had lots of dealings with authorities due to the Brexit debacle and I found it very difficult to take seriously the scruffy functionaire sitting across from me with his teeshirt ,ripped jeans and ponytail.
This individual had the power to decide our future but there was no air of authority about him and it kind of made the whole thing a bit of a joke.
Wrong for such a serious matter, sure he was qualified , yes he was pleasant but there was something not quite right.  An "impression" is important. Why don't todays people get that .

Allan doesn't always dress his best for certain things. Not sure what his priorities are when it comes to dressing up, but there are days, he'll take out his dress blues as if that what hes going to wear, but decides a shirt and tie will do. Then there are days where I think he should wear somthing formal, and he'll just grab and where whatever, and say, "After everything I've gone through in the service, if they're going judge me on clothes, f*ck 'em. Their opinion doesn't mean a damn thing to me."

I spent my 20 years in a suit and tie. Then  started my own business that required work clothes. Still I made sure they were neat and clean.

Now in retirement it's like Allen...f**k 'em. Well, going out I stay presentable but I no longer have a suit and tie.  ;D

With all due apologies, this has become "Ask An Old Male a Question."

Of course, one should always dress appropriately. However, what constitutes "appropriate dress" has evolved over time. The word "appropriate" is an opinion, and what was considered "appropriate dress" in the 1900s or 1950s may not be appropriate today. A lot of the posts above are by way of saying "I wish people dressed like they used to, when I was younger." There's nothing wrong with that desire, but it's still an opinion. And there's a word for "wishing things were the way they used to be."

Here's President Coolidge, throwing the first pitch in the 1924 World Series:

The men are all wearing suits and hats, and the women are all wearing pretty dresses.

I went to a Cubs game at CitiField back in August, and I wore shorts, sneakers, and a Cubs jersey. I was dressed nothing like the ladies in the picture taken 100 years ago.

In context, the "scruffy functionaire sitting across from me with his tee-shirt, ripped jeans and ponytail" was dressed appropriately.

That was then, this is now.

I swear, these young people do not know how to dress.

The scruffy functionaire ,tee-shirt, ripped jeans and ponytail was NOT dressed appropriately for the seriousness of the task before him but you would have had to have been there to appreciate that.

As to the "Ask An Old Male a Question" ......... When I was young I was told that I could learn a lot from old folks by listening to their opinions, but hey "that was then , this is now" I wish you young folks well.

Most of the women are wearing hats as well.

Seriously, when was the last time you saw anyone wearing a hat, male or female? (Baseball caps do NOT count.)

I don't even remember the last time I saw an Easter bonnet, let alone one with frills upon it.

If you go to Harlem or another NYC neighborhood with a high percentage of black residents on a Sunday morning, you'll see many women, and some men, wearing hats as they go to church.

Every year, NYC hosts an annual Easter Parade in Midtown Manhattan. You'll see many Easter bonnets there:

I wear a hat daily. My favorite is my Stetson Open Road. LBJ is perhaps the most famous Stetson wearer, but LBJ, Truman, and Ike also wore one. JFK pretty much killed wearing hats in public for men.

That's an urban legend.

Kennedy wore a top hat for all of the events surrounding his inauguration. He simply removed it, out of courtesy, when delivering his inaugural address:

Neither his predecessor not his successor wore hats while delivering their inaugural addresses:

By the mid-1950s, hat sales were already facing a steady decline. Kennedy's going hatless was simply the result of a longer-term trend.. It was an effect, and not a cause.

I am not familiar with Hat etiquette I know:

Remove your hat for a lady, or someone in a position higher than you

Remove your hat indoors, like at church.

Match your hat to the suit you are wearing.

Hats off for the Pledge or National Anthem

Other than that, I only own 1 hat, and its my great grandfather's fedora, as he wanted one like Dick Tracy when the comics came out. I don't wear it often, as the only suit that matches it, is a winter suit, that I have to have taken in, since I lost weight.

Kennedy generally did not wear a hat in public. His predecessors generally did. I don’t know that there’s a cause and effect connection, or if it just reflected changing fashion trends of the time. But men stopped wearing hats in the 60’s and 70’s. I have three Fedoras, the Open Road, and two straw Panamas. I’d like a Boater.

I'd bet you'll look very fetching in a straw boater.

I want a seersucker suit, bow tie, and a boater.

I’m sorry your Honor, but in light of the inclement weather, may we be permitted to remove our jackets?

On my list of the all time greatest books and films. Saw the stage play adaptation last year.
Suggested that we call our second son Atticus, Mrs Obi wasn't agreeable.

Princess, would you like to see it light up and hum when I wave it about
