Just Google “NYT Crossword Mini” if you want to see what I play. The one Barb showed does not look like it.

Here's an anecdote I heard from a friend who was addicted to The Times (UK) cryptic crossword puzzle. He'd begin his day (which started at 4 pm) with a cup of coffee, a hand-rolled cigarette, and a copy of that morning's Times. It took him about 30 mins to solve the puzzle, but his goal was to get it down to 10 mins, which was considered the unattainable holy grail.
One day he boarded the train to London as usual, sitting in one of those old compartment carriages with long seats facing one other. No corridor. Exit was through one of the two side doors.
No sooner had the train moved off than the commuters pulled out their copies of the Times and their pens, and got down to the crossword puzzle. Silence reigned. One new passenger, however, appeared to be sailing through the puzzle, filling in one or two squares a second. A minute or two later he folded up his newspaper and spent the rest of the journey staring smugly out of the window. At the terminus station he was the first to alight, leaving the newspaper on his seat.
The other passengers leapt at the abandoned newspaper and stared in disbelief at the puzzle. It had, indeed, been filled in, but with rows and columns of neatly penned X-X-Xs
Clearly a joker with a very sophisticated and slightly malicious sense of humour.
The thing is, that friend never finished his dissertation and we were all concerned about his job prospects. We needn't have worried. Rumour had it that he'd found a position in a certain government agency that he couldn't mention, even to his friends.
I believe the crossword solving test in the new film about Alan Turing isn't factual but makes for good cinema. However, it's not so far off the mark.
Hilda, who was blessed with many interesting friends. :D

Haha, I loved reading that Hilda. Thank you for sharing.

After my “big one” and open heart surgery in 2017, I was suffering from brain fog and desperately looking for something to assist with stimulating mental acuity. I took to playing word games and card games. I do about eight of them every morning. Can’t say they are helping, but I don’t think they are hurting.

My mom did something similar.
When she was in her mid-70s, and she began to realize her memory was starting to slip, she decided to take proactive steps.
While she was never even remotely a sports fan, she decided she would watch Chicago sports teams games, and keep gamer stats in her head. This was especially true with Chicago Bulls games, where, at any moment in the game, she would try to remember exactly how many points each player had scored. She then realized that she loved watching the Bulls play, and she became a huge fan.
Sadly, her brain ultimately betrayed her efforts, and she passed away from Alzheimer's back in April.
-
Sorry to hear about your mom. I lost an aunt to early onset Alzheimer’s. She was only 58.

[/b]
Oh my god, Barb. I'm so so sorry. :( Alzheimers hit all three of us it seems. Kevin was 55 I think.
You know my brain isn't right. I have timeline issues. Alsomemory issues, very selective. I might remember one thing of non importance, but forget something of great importance. Other things besides those two.
All of my doctors want me to play puzzles. I can't get enough of Suduko. Wordle. I'm not a cross word fan, but Dan and the girls are. I'll sit next to Dan on occasion and chip in where I can.
I guess the NYT mini will be my crossword daily now. Maybe graduate to something bigger down the road.
-
So sorry about your mom Barb. Alzheimer's.is the worse. We lost a neighbor to that a couple years ago.
It was long a bigger fear to me than death. One of my reactions when I was diagnosed with cancer was, "Well, I don't have to worry about Alzheimer's any more."
I also have had experience with "brain fog". I went through some heavy duty treatment for Hepatitis C many years ago. The medication left me with a fog like feeling in my head. I'd already been doing crosswords but starting getting more serious about them to help clear the cobwebs.
-
Sorry to hear about your mom. I lost an aunt to early onset Alzheimer’s. She was only 58.
My mom was 89 when she died, and she had lived a very rich and full life. In addition to raising us four kids, she was a teacher and then a principal for about 30 years, and she was one of the most loving people I've ever known. My brothers, their wives, and I decided to have the wake all day, rather than the traditional 3-4 hours over two days. It started at noon (for the "old people") and ended at close to 10 pm. I didn't count, but there were likely 200 people that came throughout the day. And at her funeral Mass, the church was packed.
For the last five years, her memory began to seriously decline. We've talked on the phone at least once a week for decades, and beginning about a year before she died, it was clear that it was seriously slipping, to the point where she no longer knew who I was. It was sad and tragic, yet the knowledge that she spent 80+ years embracing life with both arms somehow mitigated it.
I'm not sure why, but at her wake and funeral, I cried a lot less than I thought she would. There was something incredibly positive and life-affirming about her wake, and I actually laughed a lot.
There was a really cool moment at her funeral Mass. Her birth name was Marie, but she had gone by Mickey since she was a little girl. The priest saying the Mass had known her for at least 30 years. At the very beginning, he was saying a prayer over the casket before things began, and right in the middle he stopped. He explained the prayer indicated the person's name should be stated, and he told us the despite knowing her for 30 years, he had no idea what her name was, other than Mickey. There was something joyful about that for me.
-
It sounds like.a celebration of her life. She sounds like she was a wonderful woman. I loved the story about the priest. So many memories to cherish. :emot_kiss:

I solved the 8/23/2023 New York Times Mini Crossword in 59-seconds.
I found a decent crossword app for my phone. Six new puzzles every day, each takes me between 5-6 minutes. It's great for standing in line at the post office or anywhere else you have to wait five minutes or more.
It is ad-supported and those can be annoying, but otherwise it's free. I would gladly pay for an ad-free version, but that is apparently not an option.
It's in the Play Store for Android. Search for ITSG Crosswords. (I have no connection to the app other than having it installed on my phone.)
I don't know if there's a version in the Apple Store.

I'm always having issues of typing them in. I want to type the whole word, but when a letter is already in a square, it skips to the next open box, and then I have to fix it all up. I spent at least 10 seconds fixing things, so technically I beat you. ;)

Well played PS.

MJ or Toe, could you post a screenshot of the puzzle you're referring to?
I'm doing the one in "Play" on the app called "The Mini."
I've done it every day for the past 4 or 5 days, and my average time is about 0:45. And I am NOT a crossword whiz.

I think certain people's brains are wired to "see" crossword puzzles, and others' are not. It's as simply as that.
It has nothing to do with intelligence, education, or even vocabulary (though those help). It's a vision thing.

Some people visualize numbers, especially sequences of numbers, in a three-dimensional mental space. I'm one of them. I think that Francis Galton was the first to document the phenomenon: Inquiries into Human Faculty and Its Development (https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/11562).
I don't do crossword puzzles, so I'm not sure if we're talking about the same thing, but when I have to proof somebody's text I don't need to read it word by word or sentence by sentence. The typos leap out of the page. The odd thing is that this doesn't work for my own text. I can re-visit it any number of times and not spot the bloopers.

Right after you solve, a window pops that says "Share Your Victory" and that image is what shows next. I right-click on the image itself (where it shows the time) and select "Copy Image Link" then paste the link between image tags (and add width=300).
I don't know how long the NYT will make the image available so today I started adding the time under the image, just in case.

Well, that's your first problem right there. ;D
I'm on a desktop PC and as soon as I type the last letter (if it's all correct) what pops up is this:
I click the button (shown above in a red box) and this pops up next.
I've reduced the size of both screenshots for this post, but I put the mouse cursor over the light blue image under the words "Share Your Victory" and right click and choose "copy image link" then paste it between an image tag in my post here.
I tried the "Copy Link" but all that did is take me to the Mini page. I don't have Facebook, Twitter, Telegram or Whatsapp, so this is my best option other than just typing the time in plain text.
Don't know if this will help, but that's step by step what happens after I type in the last letter of the puzzle.

When you're intelligent and you somehow misspell a word you catch it right away and correct it, and you don't let it confuse you on the other words in the puzzle and you get done in an amazing time.
However, when you're a complete dumbass....👇

I usually do the puzzle when I am just waking up, and still in bed. I just enjoy warming up my mental engine. It’s not a race. So I hate to see it come down to a speed contest. Because that’s really not the point. At least it isn’t for me.

Again, it's a vision thing. I'm no smarter than anyone else in this thread, my brain simply sees the words more quickly.
I suck at Wordle and Sudoku.
-
Most of the time for me, the word makes so sense with the clue. I read the clue, and my brain goes off in a blind walk in the park twittling its thumbs, and when the answer is found through other clues, I'm still dumbfounded.
I am not afraid to say, that yes, most of you in here especially you Barb, are in fact, quite a lot smarter than me. Getting this particular one done in 31 seconds is mindblowing. Woo to you 💋❤

Nope.
It simply shows that your and my brains work in different ways. I'm not "smarter" than you (or Toe, Julie, PS, ODK, or anyone else). I read a lot, and I have for decades, so I have a slightly larger vocabulary to draw from. But that has nothing to do with being smarter.
I envy you for several different things, and that's how the world works.
-
Nope.

You could be right. Maybe if I were as smart as you, I'd be able to understand that. 🤪😉😘😃
Honestly though, I have learned and been corrected by a number of your posts here. I don't think I'm dumb, just not as smart or educated. I'm fine with it, and the fact you say you envy me in certain ways (even though you shouldn't) definitely makes up for it LoL!

I once met someone called Ng. A medical practioner based in Singapore. I still have his business card.
Now that I think of it, it was a strange encounter. We exchanged cards and he took a photo of my face. "I scan all the cards I receive," he explained, "and then link the photos to them. That way I know who's who."
He insisted on first names, so I never heard him say his family name. I'm still not sure of the correct pronunciation. His business card gives the Chinese character 呉 transcribed "n". One of my colleagues had the same family name but pronounced it "Wu". All very puzzling.

Never heard of the app, but knew all about the spritz. Many years ago Mrs Obi and I were in Italy and everybody was drinking this orange coloured drink, looked great in the sunshine, asked what it was
and ordered a couple. Found it horribly bitter and have never been slow in our condemnation of it now being everywhere in the UK. Fast forward to this year and finally discovered that you are supposed to put prosecco in it, not just tonic water. :emot_laughing:

I did not know what major league sport begins its playoffs soon. Shame on me.
Indeed. Both the Rangers and Astros are in the playoffs. One or the other will be playing the Twins in Minnesota, depending on the outcome of today's games.
If they both win or lose today, the Rangers will win the division and Houston will play the Twins.
If the Rangers lose and the Astros win, Houston wins the division because it owns the tiebreaker, and the Rangers will get to play the Twins.
Minnesota gets home field advantage, even though both Texas teams have better records.
Theoretically, it is possible that Toronto will be the team going to Minnesota, but I'm not even going to try and explain that one. If that were to happen, one of the Texas teams would go to Tampa Bay.

The doctors have told me to “avoid stress and anxiety.“ So I do my puzzles and card games as a form of meditative relaxation. If I pay too much attention to the timer, it makes me feel stressed out. But I am very competitive by nature. So it’s hard for me to just chill.
Love you too.

I agree with MJ, I do it for fun only -- and I am one of the least competitive people you'll meet. I joined the cross country team in high school and I ran pretty good times, but I eventually dropped out, because it was all about time times, and I simply wasn't interested in that.
That's also why I rarely post my scores here. I happen to be good at this one thing, and bragging about it, or seeking to one-up others, seems really silly to me.

Yeah, it was too long to be a mini.
I didn't know what "T party" meant until I got words around it," and there's no way someone outside the U.S. should know this. Basically, people come a couple of hours early to a sporting event, set up grills, pile up food, drink a lot of beer, and have a tailgate party:
It's just a coincidence that these tailgaters support that particular team....
Nor should anyone outside the U.S. know that the phrase "under God" was added to the Pledge of Allegiance in 1954. It never should have been added in the first place, and the older I get the more silly I find the Pledge of Allegiance to be.

The Saturday one is always bigger.
Those bears fans might as well enjoy the food, because that's all they'll be enjoying at la-la-Lambeau field.
I almost didn't join the Army because of things like "under god". When swearing in, the last words of the oath are "so help me god", And I refused to say it. The person doing the oath just looked at me when my mouth didnt move. He just stared at me waiting. It got uncomfortable because him, and the 6 or 7 people swearing in with me were just standing there with our hands raised.
He said I needed to say it but I'm not a Christian and I don't believe in God. Everybody left, and this guy told.my recruiter that I wasn't in. Half hour later after a bunch of discussion between my recruiter and a dozen different people, we left, I was in, and I didn't have to say the line.

Au pair is the French term for a nanny.
Okay. 'au pair' entered my brain as 'a pair'. Still not a familiar term, but I can see why you say it's French now.
Thank you.

Au pair is the French term for a live-in nanny.
Spot on!
In the UK the term "au pair" usually refers to a female student who comes to the UK to study English, lives with a British family, and does housework in return for living expenses. Au pairs are a perennial subject of male fantasy.
Here are a couple of lines from a song called, appropriately, Fantasy Girls, from an album of the same name by British group Charlie (1976).
Each night I sit in sleazy flea pits to watch the rude bits
The sexy au pair with the black leather hair and the pendulous pair.
The original cover of this album was replaced by more mundane artwork for release in the US. Maybe it had something to do with image copyright.

11 across had me confused the whole time. I put the wrong team first, thinking raiders, but as soon as I started answering other clues, I knew that wouldn't fit. 13 down also had me lost even though it was a.clue like a week ago.
To prove how stupid I am, even when it was down to one letter where 11 and 13 cross, I could not figure it out because I didnt know what the LA team was that was spelled that way. Figured it must be a college team or something. Even after i completed it, it still took me a minute to realise that it wasn't a single word.

We had fun. She had to run an errand this morning. Then we went shopping (not Total Wine), dress shopping for her. Then she went to visit her mom. She's coming back for another sleepover. Will be watching movies. Yes, Panties and T-shirts. But it's cold, so had to get the comforter out. Cuddling helped warm things up too.

I'm good on the keyboard. But not doing a puzzle. But for the last year I have been using my iPad. And that I am not as swift on.
I have only had one puzzle where I did it without typing errors. I got all of the across and it just flowed from one word to the next. But the other 99 times I played. I'm spending time fixing my errors of typing over other words. The worst is where it jumps a box because the letter is already there, buy I'm hitting the keyboard letter and I spend 10-15 seconds fixing it all back up.
-
I do the same thing, or I spend too much time checking and double checking my spelling, but mostly, it just takes me a long time figure out the answer LoL

My mom used to use that phrase to describe us very frequently, so I got it right away.
And I got 6-across right away, since I watched the movie "Once Were Warriors" relatively recently.

And I could.

They use that kind of clue in the daily crosswords I do. There's a lot of those kinds of clues. If you're a regular "solver" you just kinda know the answer without out knowing what the heck it means.

When I was younger I was a total animal nerd, and I loved coatis. They're like a cross between a raccoon and an anteater, and they had some at the Brookfield Zoo. They're ominiverous, like raccoons, and they love to eat tarantulas.

The word rebus come from the Latin expression – “Non verbis, sed rebus”. This means – Not by words but by things. A basic example is the combination of the pictures of an eye, a heart, a sun, and a flower to mean – I love sunflowers.
The type of puzzle with symbols rather than words, like the example above, is what I generally think of as being a rebus.
However, rebus is defined as: ...a representation of words, phrases, sounds or syllables by images of objects, letters, numbers or symbols. More simply, the pictures or symbols of a rebus represent and express sounds and words.
Personally I don't like to see that kind of trickery in a crossword puzzle, but the author is free to make the puzzle however he/she/they see fit. I always have the option of not doing the puzzle.
A simple rebus for you to ponder.

Yes. This might be the most US-centric mini I've ever taken. There's no reason why someone in the U.K. should know who John Muir was, or know the names of two U.S. national parks that most Americans haven't heard of.

The clue specified "First word of a state in New England" and of the six New England states, there are only two that have two words, and one of them only has 3 letters in the first word.

Fun fact: Only four of the six New England states were part of the original Thirteen Colonies. Anyone want to know which two weren't?
Both Vermont and Maine were originally colonized by the French.
Vermont was part of New France until the 1760s, and its name comes from the French meaning "Green Mountain." It became a British colony in 1764, after the Seven Years War, and it became part of New York Colony. In 1777, it declared its independence from Britain and declared itself The Republic of Vermont. It was admitted as a state in 1791, making it the 14th State.
Maine was also a French colony. In the 1740s, the territory was split in two, with half controlled by the French and half by the British, and the British part became part of the Massachusetts colony. It seceded from Massachusetts in 1819, and it became the 23rd state in 1820, as part of the Missouri Compromise. Interestingly, Maine's northern border with Canada wasn't confirmed until 20 years later.

BTW - I didn't understand what the circled letters meant on Fridays puzzle. :(
In the center of the puzzle there are darker lines that make up a grid of nine squares. From left to right, starting with the T in Utica, the top row spells TIC. From the same T, diagonally, is the word TAC, and from T the three letters going down spell TOE.
TIC TAC TOE. That's the American name given to a game you call Noughts and Crosses.
Don't ask me what it has to do with the puzzle. I see no connection at all.

Mens rea refers to criminal intent. The literal translation from Latin is "guilty mind." The plural of mens rea is mentes reae. Mens rea is the state of mind statutorily required in order to convict a particular defendant of a particular crime.
I knew it.

Thursday was 2:24. It would be nice if I knew how to spell 7 across. I had it early, but wrong spelling. Sometimes the simplest words just baffle me. 5 & 8 down saved me there
1 across I had the first letter, because of 1 down. But I had another word in there. I posted it in What Are You Listening To? (https://www.kristensboard.com/forums/index.php?topic=7401.msg661687#msg661687). Didn't go with the parenthesis part of the clue. But with that first letter, I was sure of it.

1:01 for today.
I've heard that phrase, but I only got it in Saturday's puzzle by solving the clues around it.
It's definitely American, but while you hear it from time to time, it's not commonly used. It has nothing to do with the alcoholic beverage, but the exact origin of the phrase is unclear.
Some scholars say it refers to the cotton gin, a device invented in the early 19th century that separates the seeds and the fluffy part of picked cotton.
Others say it derives from the word ginger, a spice that was added to dishes to "liven them up."

9 across... I couldnt figure out how to fit "well shit!!" Into three letter.🤣😂
-
I know the holiday, just not the specific date.
MLK Day is one of those holidays that's not always on a given date, it is the third Monday of January every year. The earliest it can be is January 15 (as it will be in 2024), and the latest is January 21 (as it will be in 2030). Martin Luther King was born on January 15, 1929 so in 2024 MLK Day will be on his actual birthday.
The same pattern is true for Presidents' Day in February. It's always the third Monday of the month, as early as the 15th and as late as the 21st. It was originally called Washington's Birthday, which is ironic because he was born on February 22, 1732 and Presidents' Day can never actually fall on the 22nd.

I had to work around it to fill in the squares. Mercury can refer to a record label, a car, an element on the periodic table, a planet, a Roman god and probably other things that I don't even know about.

I feel like the timer adds a lot of pressure. I often take longer than necessary because I have to go back and correct a hurried mistake. Meanwhile, I've also started playing the sudoku, I never pay attention to how long that takes (sometimes I even go on a break, do something else, and then come back to it later) and it's somehow the least stressful for me ;D

I thought Altoids were that patch of lymphoid tissue that sits at the very back of the nasal passage. ;D
Altoids are a brand of mints, sold primarily in distinctive metal tins. The brand was created by the London-based Smith & Company in the 1780s, and became part of the Callard & Bowser company in the 19th century. Their advertising slogan is "The Original Celebrated Curiously Strong Mints", referring to the high concentration of peppermint oil used in the original flavour lozenge.
So they are a British thing Obi. Very popular here in the Colonies also.

It's a term used by bagel company Einstein Bros. So common to us in the US with the bagel company's popularity.
It's basically cream cheese that is smeared on the bagel.
I googled it though, for a clearer explanation than I offer
"The use and spelling of schmear or shmear in American English is a direct loanword from Yiddish, where its original usage referred to cheese. In modern usage it has extended to anything that can be spread, such as cream cheese spread upon a bagel."
