It took me a week to find, and an arm and a leg to buy. But it is mine... ALL mine... "My precious..."
Beautiful stuff, but its getting to be not worth the price anymore. I went into a store and was happily surprised to see it. When I asked how much, I was already cringing before the $550 came out of his mouth. Used to be that a store would get cut off for selling it for that kind of mark up.
I paid close to $1,000 for that bottle. It was for a jerky boss that I am happy I no longer work with. Possibly the worst career investment I ever made.
Van Winkle (any of them) are darn good but the hype has out priced their taste for me. I know a liquor store owner who told me that years ago, he couldn't give Pappy away because nobody ever heard of it. Then a couple of TV shows, most notably "Justified" gave them some kind of cult like following, and the burglary only helped that mystique. I've had Pappy 23 two different times at $50/shot and while damn good, wouldn't make it a habit. There are tons of great Kentucky whiskeys out there for under $100/bottle. Currently I am drinking Blanton's, Col. E. H. Taylor and although I am not a fan of Beam, really like Booker's Small Barrel.
I agree completely. This guy is one of the most pompous asshats I have ever encountered, and this is pretty much the only thing he would drink aboard his Gulfstream III. Really wish I'd pissed in it first.
I am a bourbon man too. I have had Had a few bottles of Pappy. I agree, it is something that is much more ritual driven than flavor driven. Anything that is that hard to get should be experienced. It's definitely a celebratory drink only.
For every day bourbon intent to stay with Blantons. It's pricey but affordable. It's one of my favorites. I drink bourbon only with ice.
For the money, there is a bourbon from Buffalo Trace (which I do not care for) called Elmer T Lee. It is priced along the lines of Makers. If you like bourbon and you see a bottle of this - buy it. I have friends in a few states that have been given strict orders. If you see it buy it for me.
I am also a Makers Mark ambassador. I probably drink MM as my go to every day drink. It's always good and high quality.
When I am not drinking whiskey, I drink red wines. I try to drink a glass a day. I like about all reds at different times. My most recent favorite was a Cab Merlot from Greg Norman Estates. It was very good and I will buy it again. My favorite red of all time is Clos Du Vol.
