We can't be sure of that. There are many stories surrounding St. Nicholas. In my country we don't celebrate Santa Claus but Sinterklaas (more like the original St Nicolas) who comes to bring children gifts in the night of 5 to 6th December, seated on his white horse and aided by his helpers called 'Black Petes' (representing the Mores).
